Spire
Agreed, the booth was a long day, most of it spent standing and leaning over a table about 4 inches shorter than the length of my arms. But I like doing the demos and teaching CAV, it's that first contact thing. The math thing I try to avoid using, I like going after the speed and simplicity aspects. Oh, and the non-collectablility, I find that sells parents faster than anything else. Especially if they have younger kidz that have done the Pokemon, then Magic, then MK. I thought that was what the tourney points was. My guess, probably around 1750 points. But I think that is something that we as AOs should work on: a standard tourney set-up. I'd suggest the 1750 point level with a mandatory 4 CAVs, no more, no less. Played on a 6ft by 4ft table with four deployment zones centered on each table edge, each 6 inch square (@2ft on the short edge and @3ft on the long). Comments? Roadkill
Fave Section? hmm well i guess it's a matter of style.. I like to stay mobile I don't like to tie faster units down to a much slower support unit.. I guess what i would field if I had no idea what i was facing would be: 2Gladiators 1Assassin 1Wraith there is nothing this section cannot handle, from popping soft targets to dropping cavs.. there is nothing you can drop on the other side of the table that i would not have a good chance of dealing with. I've taken this section on several occasions even against superior Point costs and have come out on top.. Mike
KaiMaster
About tourney points... at NukeCon I ran games at 1800 pts with JoR points. That # of points seems all around the best to me. The problem with declaring "4 cavs minimum" is that CAV is a combined arms game... why wouldn't a person go with two rhinos with armor upgrades and vet/vet and two stands of crappy infantry with all their guns stripped... Unless your tourney is a "CAV-only" tournament which defeats a lot of the strengths of the game IMHO. Now we have a tank, and a couple aircraft, we have combined arms options. KaiMaster
My favorite section is Rhino, Ogre, Knight, Kahn/Panther. I don't mind a lack of speed honestly, and I can put armor upgrades on most of 'em for 1800 pts. Knight is tough as nails (gotta love +3 armor) and it loves infantry heheheh It does depend on your mood, ever have those days when your favorite section is a ace/ace panther and 3 specters with armor upgrades? ;)
Leech
Kai, we're talking the Warmaster here which is a single section of CAV's. I agree for other tournaments then combined arms should come into it, but the Warmaster is different :o)
Chrome
That's funny Frank... I distinctly remember hearing about people in the WarMaster at Origins using Infantry and gunships.
Leech
I mean The Big Dance. The Warmaster at Origins was supposed to be CAV's only (as far as I'm aware) but some people decided to try other things. It was only AO's anyway.... Chrome
I know you did Frank, but we were talking about real games, not fiction.
Leech
As was I.... the Warmaster should be of the same format as that seen in the novella. It may be the way a player gets into CAV and we should try to be as consistent as possible. Afterall, that's something which pisses a lot of ppl off. Spire
A Warmaster style tourney was what I wanted to simulate, hence the 4 CAVs. This way we keep it in line with the CAV universe. Maybe if we can standardize the tourney, we can have state/regional/national/international tournaments and a ranking system. That would be pretty kewl for the game and another sell point is that you only need 4 CAVs for the tourney. Even cheaper than getting into GW's RT tourney system. sparky
It was only AO's anyway.... Sorry to report, that there were two none AO's at the tourneyment last year, myself and Salamander. I had played a total of about a four games prior to entering the tourney but still had a ball. Back to the original question at hand, I'm partial to a mixed section of two Gladiators and two Wraiths. The speeds match up nicely and the strenghts of one compliment the weaknesses of the other. The Gladiator in my opinion is better than a Dictator because while you give up one point on the main gun, you gain it back in the target lock, and as bad as I roll dice, that is a serious plus. The Wraith on the other hand is an excelent soft target killer, and it has an indirect missle pack that the Gladiator gives up for more effective hard target killing. Gobbo
I have to say for tournaments, I plan to use the following CAV section Rhino x 1, Soverign x 1, Gladiator x 1, and Dictator x 1. Good solid heavy section with lots of firepower and range. It also has the ability [depending on points for tournament] to have armor upgraded or "Wisso" upgrade on one. Chrome
Gobbo, dump the Rhino, pick up another Gladiator, Dictator or a Wight and put the extra points into crew upgrades. You'll be better off.
Daley's Dragoons
Well after alot of input and pouring over the CAV rule book (not fortunate enough to have the JoR yet) and my tentative group is a Dictator, Starhawk, Wraith and a either a Gladiator or Knight. Not the most mobile of forces but a decent enough mix of weapons that should beable to handle any hard or soft targets. This list may change after I get a chance to see JoR (hopefully soon!) Jeremy
Oh, I assure you Daley, it will. Once you get the JOR you will be itching to get your hands on some of those CAV's. When does the Duelist come out again???
