Citrine tries to tackle Ma'aldrakar 77580

Recommended Posts

So this holiday break I decided to try starting, and maybe even finishing Ma'al (Reaper 77580), aka Tiamat.  I go back to work next Wednesday, so this is a bit ambitious, but at least I am going to use the biggest brushes I can get my hands on!

I got rid of mold lines and glued it together on the Saturday before Christmas.

This morning I got up the courage and got out the green stuff.  I had started applying base coat when hubby said I should document the progress.

So here are some progress pictures:

Today's progress after putting on base coat/liner using a large flat brush.  It's pretty sloppily applied I admit.  The Dragon is so big I am painting it at the living room table rather than at my normal paint station.

Got some more done this morning, put black on a bunch of cracks and spots I had missed previously.  Also painted some on all the eyes, but I had to stop in the middle of that when my hands started shaking to much.

Very nice.  I'm watching your progress, trying to psyche myself up enough to get back to working on the piece I started back at the end of the summer.

The Egg

So far it had not been as bad as I feared, so just keep at it, eventually it will be done, and you will feel a lot of accomplishment!

An hour or so more this morning, painted more red on the red dragon head.  If anyone wondered, the reds so far are my favorite for painting deep red:  Reaper 9277 Splattered Crimson and 9663 Big Top Red.

Painted some more red yesterday after work, and today after work I gave the green dragon head some love.  Reaper  Coal Black 9693 as the base coat, with some Reaper green with an unreadable label as the mid tone.

Since I haven’t had a WIP in a very long time, I thought this mini would be perfect for it. I plan to paint her up for a Christmas gift for a friend and figured to keep me on track I’d do a WIP.

I have a few minis in progress she’ll be my main priority after my Darksword Stephanie Law Bard. I prepped her and primed yesterday after the humidity finally dropped.

My current projects in various stages on my desk.

And just the pinup after some prep work

A few places I could have spent more time on but figured I’ll prime and see what stands out.

I used army painter matte black primer followed by Tamiya fine white primer. For the bits on her base I left them in black since she will be the focal point no need to use white on them, it’ll help the colors be a bit more muted.

And finally my quick mock up for color checking. I usually just print a stock photo and use my paints over it to plan the general scheme.

Now to finish up my bard then onto tackling her flesh. Since she’ll have a hint of sheer with her stocking I needed to be sure the color for her skin and the sheer works and won’t lose the effect due to the color choices.

Feel free to post C&C throughout, or ask questions. I’m always happy to share what I can. I’ll do my best to share the steps I take and colors used.

      Happy painting everyone.

I love doing WIPs. And I've got a lot projects I should finish 😊. And since there is still no progress with Barros and Tempest (this time because I'm still waiting for a new base to be shipped), why not start something new?

I've yet to paint my first dragon, so I'll use this opportunity to do it. I confess, I'm cheating a bit here, since I'm going to paint the white dragon by Dark Sword Minis - that's a very small dragon. But still, he's got wings and teeth and claws and scales, so definitely a dragon, yessir!

I absolutely love this mini. I bought it many years ago, but the horns went missing. Fortunately, when I ordered some more minis from Dark Sword a while ago, I was able to order some spare horns, so now I'm good to go.

Here he is, assembled and prepped:

Now I have to decide on a paint scheme, which I can't bring myself to do. There are three ideas I have at the moment:

paint him up as an ice dragon. I'm thinking white with pinkish/greenish undertones and a base made with transparent crackle paint. There was a very cool version of an Ice Dragon a while ago on this forum, but I can't seem to find it any more.  paint him up as a star dragon using the technique I learned at RVE in Kevin Holderny's class. I used it on a coat so far, maybe it looks very cool on the dragon's wings. paint him up as a real world snake. Now there are so many possibilities...
      Decisions, decisions...

Some more work on the base.

I finished some townsfolk recently, they snuck into the queue ahead of my halfpainted drow squad. 😮

Here are 2 Bones 3 ogres I finished in the last few months, Reaper Ogre Matriarch (SKU 77568) and Ogre Chieftain (SKU 77566) . The detail on the goblin was very soft, and my painting progress stopped for a couple of months.  But now they are finally ready for some tabletop fun.
