Modern smart phones are wonderful devices that have started the zombie apocalypse, starting with the children. They are S-M-R-T. They carry the ability to access the sum total knowledge of humanity, but we use them to send pictures of our naughty bits and look at cat pictures and change how we look? Seriously? Right now, I use mine to access job sites if I'm out and about. I'm constantly looking for work that pays well enough to pay my bills that also meets my requirement of not driving me mad at the same time. I also use it to access the book of faces, and a couple news aggregators. I'm rather fond of mine, though my next one is definitely going to be water resistant. Not that I've had any mishaps, but it would be nice to not have to pack it in a plastic bag in case of rain, stream crossings, or sweaty humid days when hiking. I use mine all the time. Predominately for social calendar stuff, texting, banking, meal/step tracking, and games. Some of the culture surrounding "newer, better, bigger/smaller" I find ridiculous. But people are people. Generally a big fan. I love having a computer PADD in my pocket. Being able to access the Reaper forum, look for answers to all of life's important questions (wait, what year did that movie come out in?), making sure I don't get lost, keeping my various alarms, reminders, and calendar appointments all handy... Sanael Posted February 7, 2018 Share Posted February 7, 2018 I'm actually really amazed by this pocket-sized supercomputer... But I wish the phone app wasn't so crappy. I just got a new phone... On average, my phones have lasted about 7 years, so you can imagine this Moto X is quite an upgrade. I use it for these forums, as a camera, a radio and a newspaper. I hate social media (obviously I'm referring to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. and not things like this forum) and don't use it, but I do worry about what it does to the world. I generally communicate more Via text than call, but it's nice to do either. Ultimately, this thing is more weal than woe. Geoff Davis Posted February 7, 2018 Share Posted February 7, 2018 (edited) I didn't realize how much of a tether they could be until I retired from the army and gave them back the Blackberry. It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders, and it was nice not to have my boss was constantly 'helping' in my work. It took me quite a while to stop reaching for it constantly. Now I have a smartphone of my own, though, and I am firmly tethered once again, although voluntarily. I am in closer communication with my family throughout the day with it, but when we are at home together we all use them too much instead of talking to each other. I think overall my tablet is a better tool (other than as a phone), because I can't carry it around and check it constantly (becoming detached and distracted), but when I am doing something where I need to find information quickly for something really important, it is easily at hand (for example, looking up a painting tutorial video). As a deaf person, I really shouldn't comment. When I could hear I didn't much care for the relatively less than smart phones; re, I considered them intrusive. I have noticed that there are quite a number of folks that go through life staring at the little things & are totally disconnected from everything that is going on in life around them. I recently had to buy a new cell phone. I had been using an old flip phone that couldn't access the internet. I bought a cheap flip phone that can't access the internet. My wife had an iphone for a couple years and it annoyed me and it took her forever to figure out how to use it. She recently switched to a Galaxy S7 and it's annoying her but I find it much easier to use. Where I live cell coverage is spotty. If I need internet I have it in both my houses (farm and town). When I'm working I don't need the distraction and I only turn on my cell when I need to call someone or I'm waiting for an important can't wait call. I can't hear the thing ring half the time when I am carrying it because I'm often around loud heavy equipment. My wife tried to convince me to buy a smart phone when I "upgraded" but I told her I don't need it when I'm at home and 90% of the time when I'm on the road she's with me and I can use hers. Why pay $65 a month for a service I'll use a couple times a month at most? It's bad enough I'm paying $30 a month for basic cell service I rarely use but I call it insurance in case of emergencies. It's comforting to know that if I'm in an accident I only need to climb to the top of the tallest hill in the vicinity to get help. Decided to add a summary of my opinion. Smart phone good but not necessary, people that can't look away from one for more than a minute bad. They're a useful tool that's rather handy, but they're also bringing the electronic zombie apocalypse. Way too many in the generations that came after me ate heavily addicted to the things... However, I will say this. While I absolutely love my desktop computer (doubly so because it has a CLICKY KEYBOARD OF DOOOOM, three monitors, and a built in paint dryer (joys of having a 24/7load on your graphics card - no, not mining, I help out with cancer research)), there is something so insanely convenient about having internet, the ability to look up neat places near you that you might not know about (Google Maps), a flashlight, a decent camera (provided you have reasonable quality light sources handy), a phone, a cheap but handy if things hit the fan compass, a step tracker (that's not very reliable but still), a movie viewer, a digital audio player, the ability to look up nearby food trucks, and a bunch of other things all in one tiny device.... Oh right, it's also fun to catch Pokemon on or "hack" portals (I used to play Ingress, smurfs forever!) too... I also don't touch Facebook, and don't even have an account on it. Sure, I have Twitter and Google+, but I NEVER use those... Really don't like that some people out there think a touch screen is the best way to interface with a device (sorry, a physical keyboard trumps this, at least for entering data - for navigating and general use touch is sooo handy) and even more so that some people cannot function without the device. I find that it can be an electronic leash, but it is becoming more necessary because business as a whole is switching everything over to apps and accessibility, so not having one leaves one at a severe disadvantage in life.
