As society becomes more electronically motivated, the demand for the printed word is decreasing.  How "paperless" are you?

Most of my bills and assorted documents are delivered electronically, though I print out and save relevant bits.  For example, I'll print the list of charges on my credit card statement and my payment confirmation, but not the other 4 pages of stuff that they include with a paper bill.

Pretty paperless. All my bills and bank statements are electronic. I regularly use my kindle. I even have a notebook app on my phone for keeping grocery and to-do lists.

On the other hand, I probably killed a couple of trees printing out my CPA study guide.

Fairly paperless.

All my bills and bank thingys are e-mailed to me these days, but I do still read a newspaper every day.

Not very? Most of my bills are electronic now, about the only ones I don't pay online are the ones where we are charged a "service fee" for paying online. I refuse to pay a fee for them to have the assurance that my check won't bounce and to save them a trip to the bank to deposit the check. :p

That said, I still get a lot of books in print -- though not all anymore. I have a kindle and do use that and have been getting more and more of my rpg and other gaming books in digital format just because it is so much easier to just bring my tablet. At work though, we are not even remotely paperless, even though everything gets scanned to the server. There's an ongoing push to enforce a paperless environment in my industry in my state, but there's been a lot of push back from the "old guard" in that regard. Its only a matter of time before it gets there, but even then I imagine in my work there will always be a trend of printing things out, even if its delivered electronically.

I'm probably about 50/50.  Though right now I'm not really doing a bunch of reading, but I still prefer game rules in hardcopy.  That's one area I don't think I can convert to digital for.  I  bought a digital version of one of Osprey's rule sets and I did not care for it.  About half my bills still send paper and I haven't bothered changing them.

Most of my bills are paperless, but other than that, I am not paperless. I have stacks and stacks of notebooks for anything remotely creative. Back to school is the best time to buy notebooks.

At work: You must be joking! Shipping inspectors, ports state control, Flag state etc.: Everyone want to see paper records of everything, proof that we aren't doing anything naughty for at least 5 years into the past. Several spare cabins on my present ship are full of old logbooks and cargo statements, gently fossilising.

At home: Not very. Bank and do taxes on line but still buy plenty of books. Rationalisation of this: Books require paper. Paper comes from trees. Provided you plant more trees and don't destroy the paper you are in fact doing carbon capture and helping the environment. Also paper is a good insulator. So if you line the interior of all rooms with books you are helping save heat and reduce energy bills.

I do pay my bills online when possible, but books are are something else. I have a reverence for the printed word.

Books are treasures to be read & reread, referenced & referred to. There is something holy about a book. AND they

don't disappear when the power goes out. If you had a physical/emotional reaction to the book burning in the Indiana

Jones: The Last Crusade, you'll understand what I mean.

I tend do do all my banking stuff digitally.

Ordering online.

I gave up all newspapers and magazines in favor of digital copies and the internet.

At work however I use a lot of paper still.

Nothing electronic compares to paper.  There's nothing like the feel of the page or the smell of a new book.  There's nothing like the feel of writing on paper, especially using a fountain pen.  There's something comforting too about the sound of writing on paper with a nice pen.

I need more bookcases.

That said, there are definite advantages to "paperless":

  • Most of my bills and credit card statements are paperless because I don't really need hard copies of them.  (Although I was forced to go paperless on my retirement account and I'm still unhappy about that.)
  • While nothing compares to physical books, ebooks and PDFs are significantly easier to transport and read on a dark bus.  (I already carry around an iPad with me anyway.)
  • Some books, especially RPG books from 10+ years ago, are much, much easier to acquire as PDFs than to go hunting on auction sites.
  • I'm out of room for bookcases without getting really creative.

I still buy a lot of books for reading and notebooks for writing. I also prefer to use print copies of my RPG reference books.

On the other hand, paperless banking is something I enjoy. And I send more emails and texts than letters and telegrams.

I buy RPG books in both formats.  All of my reading for entertainment, though, is electronic.  I should buy more books in printed format... I work in a College of Forestry and the mills need to keep running.  Printed paper is a very renewable resource, and trees are not just for carbon sequestration.  I find that when I am involved heavily in plays at the theatre that I don't read as much, because I am already reading lots of pages every day.  I still prefer to get a paper copy of my bills though, some of which I pay online... though, I still pay my water bill in person because they mixed up my meters more than once.
