First Mini: Ugh...

Best: Both of these were painting several months after the first one. I can't decide between these two

Why I Paint:

Catharsis mainly. Painting for me is a form of meditation. I hyper-focus on the minutia of each brush stroke and shut off the rest of my brain. I don't think of anything else except of what is directly in front of me. It can sometimes be a little stressful, but in the end, when I have a mini I can be proud to display, the reward is immeasurable. To paraphrase Hemingway; I don't always enjoy painting, but I love having painted.

My first metal mini (we won't count the repaints of plastic WotC, because I don't remember which one was first), was Frulla Krung, 02622.

She's shiny. She was also the first one I went out and bought real mini paint for. I had been using craft paint, but they didn't have a suitable skin tone, and I didn't want to mess it up.

It's difficult to pick a the best, but the one Hubby shows off all the time is a mod of Elladan, 77071. The pictures are crappy because I can't find my camera, which has the good pictures in it.

Hubby shows it off for the detail on the back there.

Because I love creating miniature things. Because I love painting.

Because when I don't do creative things I get depressed.

Also, this:

Possibly not my best, but certainly my favorite. And I'm not just pandering :;):

Feb16---I honestly have no idea anymore. I know I started out painting toy soldiers, the ones you could get a bag of for a buck or two way back when. From there, I switched to Airfix model airplanes and figures, as well as painting some stuff on my dad's model train layout (HO scale [1/87th]). The Airfix stuff probably works out to close to 20mm scale; HO scale falls between 15mm and 20mm.

This fellow isn't the first fantasy figure I ever painted, but it's from the same time, and it's one that I can find, and haven't repainted (although that may change, now that he's out....).

Feb17---I don't know, I've gotten some awesome compliments on pieces that I personally didn't think were really all that good, so I'm probably not a very good judge. I suppose I could say any of the figures I've gotten medals for at Reapercon.

Feb18---I enjoy doing it.

Not quite my first (as my very first was a model of a late 80's Dodge Viper from Revell, and I definitely don't have any pictures of it on my hard drive since I was using a 110 back then, and I don't feel like digging through all my old prints to see if I ever did take a pic of it), but...  This guy is reasonably close to being one of my first minis, and still in the original paint scheme I did for him way back when...

Please excuse the dust, he's been out in the open for a while, with the intent on eventually doing something to him involving actual colours.  I do wonder if my first "smash various bits together and call it a conversion" guy is still kicking around in the colours I painted him in, or if I re-primed him ages ago or not.  I'll have to dig through my various boxes and find out.

I'm relatively new to painting as a hobby (at least one that's semi-seriously approached with a "let's have a ton of fun" attitude), but at the moment, the one I'm most proud of is....  77068: Anirion from the Layer Up LTPK.

That cloak, and especially the layering was, in the long run, a good amount of fun, and a few minutes in definitely sold me on layering as a primary technique.

I paint for a variety of reasons...

- I not only enjoy assembling the models, but also bringing them to life

- I find painting rather relaxing

- This is going to sound silly, but anyone who's ADHD (or has friends that deal with such) will understand it instantly....  It makes my mind shut up and just focus on a single thing

- I seem to sleep better on nights I've painted, probably due to mind being a lot more relaxed when I paint.

- It can really REALLY help you get through a hell day at work because you already have a list of things you'd like to do, or try, when you get home...  And you're only an hour into your shift.

- This one's more of a playful one, but kind of true at the same time...  It's helped keep my desk area clean, because I'd rather have to only spend a minute or two getting minis set up to paint than have to clean first ^_^;;;

because (If i remember correctly)  it was made specifically for you.  That adds a whole new layer of attachment to it.

Even if you have painted other figures better, that one is yours. And unique in all the world.

yeah painting engages the flip side of my ADD (non hyperactive)  Hyper-focus. the tuning out the rest of the world.

and at the end we get ART!  rather than a slightly better score on a video game or something.   Or in a worst case scenario a slot machine.  I took one trip to Vegas, and while I broke even, I decided it was easier not to start feeding machines than it was to stop.

My actual winning came from a single bet on a roulette wheel, then walking away.

Yeah, that's me, right there. Focusing on one single brush stroke at a time in a Zen-like fashion, almost like a form of meditation.

Yes, Yes, and Yes.  I should probably start painting again before I sleep. I usually read, but upon contemplation, I think I have actually slept better on those nights I paint right before bed...hmmmm....

If I had teh munnies I would have @TaleSpinner make the full set. I have at least five more tiny dolls that need minis made for them. Alas! I am poor!

I am sorry about missing yesterday.  Things happened.  I didn't see a computer all day.

February 20:

What color is your hair and how do you style it?

It's okay, stuff happens. I would've liked to have not seen computers yesterday too

My hair is "red". More specifically, it's coppery orange. I usually wear it in a braid, because I sit on it less then

Oh, styling products? Does a brush count? In the winter I use leave in conditioner on the ends, that's as close as I come to typical styling.

Low maintenance is my comfort zone.
