Do you or your family have any folk tales, remedies, prognostications you can share with us? Had to think about this for awhile. My family isn't superstitious but there are a few interesting stories and beliefs. Having a healthy dose of native american ancestry gives us a few signs from watching the wildlife. My personal favourite that has been tested and proved year after year on the farm is this one. Watch what the beavers do in the spring. If they open their dams and let all the water out it will be a wet year. If they build them up to catch as much runoff as possible it will be a dry year. I have a cousin that can do the pig spleen thing that Pezler mentioned. I haven't seen it myself but people claim he's accurate. For remedies I use two for colds. If I start getting that certain tickle in my throat or nose I start taking tablespoon of honey with about half a teaspoon of cinnamon. I take this once or twice a day for a few days. Since I started doing this I seem to get colds less often and usually not as sick if I do catch it. The other is my wife's russian cold remedy. Take a shot of vodka with half a teaspoon of black pepper before bed and cover yourself up good. It makes you sweat pretty good and theoretically burns the cold out of you. I've had mixed results with it but will do it when I feel extra crappy. I was visiting with my mom today and she was talking about water witching. I know a couple different methods for finding underground water and have seen that they work. One is to hold two bent wires, one in each hand. When you walk over water they will cross. The other is using a y shaped willow switch. Hold it in both hands and if you walk over shallow water it will bob up and down. Supposedly the number of times it bobs is how many feet to water. I know the location dip is accurate but I've never verified the depth part.
Dr.Bedlam
My Native American spirit guide taught me that by unobtrusively loitering in the parking lot in bars and nightclubs, you can often clean up as far as finding lost wallets and spare change when everyone leaves after midnight. Drunks' pockets often leak, particularly when they are distracted. Edited February 3, 2018 by Dr.Bedlam 2

Sergeant_Crunch
On my Mom's side, we prepare a big dish of sauerkraut, ham, and dumplings on New Year's Day. If it isn't finished it is bad luck for the year. Thankfully we all can pack away some food...not that it has helped me much over the past few years.

Castor Oil... a couple of generations ago my family was known to employ the stuff as a general purpose remedy, or so I am told. However......I was largely spared experiencing whatever virtue it had.

NomadZeke
I follow the local mlb team, but other than that it's kinda 'eh' The only sport I actively play, if you call it a sport - is the heavy combat. I used to do a few misc martial arts, volleyball, and baseball.

No. 6 minutes ago, TaleSpinner said: Do you play any sports, if so what? I used to fence for years. My preferred weapon is epee. Due to aging knees and kids, I quit 2 years ago. I miss it sometimes, but I do like all the time I have gained not driving to St. Paul 3 times a week.

Nope, don't watch or follow any sports. I used to if you go back enough years. Now, if we had more arenacross and supercross events here in town... That I'd pay attention to. As for playing sports, in high school I used to play badminton, curl, and swim competitively. We were middle of the pack for badminton, curling we were in the top 1/3rd of the teams, and for swimming... I was in the top ten for 200m events (7th for 200m backstroke, and I think 10th for front stroke) Used to also play paintball, and will eventually get back into it with some sort of relic from ages gone by if you listen to some of the electropneumatic guys (I prefer to play with... a pump gun. Sometimes stock too, but hopperball is fine). I've annoyed a few guys by being a rather difficult target to hit, even with being a rather large and visible 6'2" target - it seems I'm rather good at tucking against and/or behind snakes and giving my team some good vantage points to push forward with. That's right, a tall guy, playing front. usually it's the 5'2" guys that do that

I'll occasionally watch short bits of equestrian sports, ice skating, or miscellaneous. I don't follow anything. I used to do competitive routine dance (tap & jazz), used to ski, and used to ride horses. Mom has horse in another state now though. Also did some target shooting with a recurve bow for a while. Had a semester of fencing. If the sport involves a ball, I'm bad at it.
