(like, once or twice a year) 2 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? OSL. Just now beginning, and ended up with 3 minis in a row that needed it. First one turned out pretty good, second one had too much global lighting, and the third one is still in progress.
Inarah
2 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? NMM. I've taken several classes at Reapercon, and tried various "formulas" and while I think my shading is good, it doesn't look like metal.

Do you play any sports, if so what? I like sports, I just don't generally like watching them on TV. I prefer college football. There is only one game a year I make an absolute point to watch and it's not the Super Bowl. It's The Game between The Ohio State University and that team up north. I played soccer from a young age all the way through graduating high school. I also spent a couple of my teenage years studying Goju Ryu. I've not done either since. 2 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? Sheer stockings on the Bomber Sophie which I turned into Biker Sophie.
Sanael
2 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? OSL. I'm pretty happy with my two major attempts: Dwarf Wizard Not-a-Hobbit If you check the index in my sig, Sascha duBois and Ezrem also have some OSL, but those were less successful, earlier attempts. I have a Jedi in my queue to do more OSL with a higher level of ambient light, we will see how that goes. My current WiP will involve some NMM, which will represent the first time I've seriously attempted the technique, so ask me again in a month and my answer may change.

Cyradis
2 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? Intense freehanding. It turned out well, and the CO folks are on my case to finish the piece. Otherwise, smooth blending (NMM and on other stuff). Mixed results. I end where I like it, but that may take more time than anticipated. OSL: need to practice this more often. It turned out alright but I think I can do better in the future.
SparrowMarie
5 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? Probably some OSL. It came out okay but definitely needed some work. I've got some figures to play around with it on I just never find time to do them. Pezler the Polychromatic
3 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? Sculpting greenstuff. For anyone who has never done it before, it can seem incredibly daunting. I think my first attempt went well: I don't know what the fuss is about, sculpting is easy.
Bruunwald
4 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? Eyes, every time I have to do them. Let me clarify that: I am a master of electronic/glowing/magical eyes, but normal, human eyes throw me into a panic each time. I end up either nailing them on the first try, or struggling, due to panic, and requiring a bunch of time to get them right. Yes, I know all the techniques and breathing exercises and the zen of the thing, and all that, yadda, blah. And I am fine painter otherwise, who does commissions and paints at shows, and all that. I get them done fine eventually. It's a mental block. I get weird thinking about it. I just can't break the habit of freaking out when I have to do "normal" eyes.
pcktlnt
6 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? Free hand tattoo for my pirate. Used the lessons learned from talespinner class to glaze over the skin, but didn't do the glazing well enough. Also, not sure how to shade and highlight tattoos.
Moderator Chaoswolf Posted February 5, 2018 Moderator Share Posted February 5, 2018 6 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: February 5: What was the most difficult technique you have ever attempted on a mini and how did it turn out? All of the ones that folks have already mentioned. OSL--tried it once so far; looked ok-ish. maybe... Eyes--sometimes they're ok, sometimes not. As anyone who has been on the hangouts with me can attest, there is usually at least a little swearing involved. Freehand--I can't draw stick figures very well, but for some reason, I think I can do freehand design on cloaks and stuff. Sometimes it looks alright, other times not so much. I still keep trying it, though. Haven't messed with NMM or any of that stuff though.
Pingo
I have fiddled around with OSL once or twice. Spoiler

Non-Metallic Metal. I tried doing the old NMM LTPK many moons ago, quickly realized it would take far too much practice for me to reach the level of 'Not quite so eye-meltingly terrible' and gave up. Lord of the Dish Pit
Feb 5th: It's a toss up between eyes and blending flesh. With eyes the usual off white and black dot usually comes out ok, but I'm now begining to move toward more complicated versions. My first attempt being Stone the undead gunslinger and it's a bit uneven but it works. As to flesh, sometimes I get random roughness once it dries, and sometimes I don't. My attempts at thinning sometimes come out too thin, so my search for a happy medium continues. With the last two figures I've done/ been doing I've had some better luck. Haven't attempted OSL yet, but I have some dwarf miners coming up so that should be interesting.
