Infantry in Cav?

Hi all,

I'm currently nearing finishing my UTF '66th" army and I was wondering how many of you use infantry in games I've just picked up some PA, PA panzerfaust, Reg Inf & Reg with Hvy weapons so by my reckoning thats 3 bases from each pack so 12 bases, 6 each of PA and regular infantry, is this enough generally or do you use a lot more?

I'll Add my painted figures to the UTF thread when they are ready

regards

I typically base my infantry as three-man squads, so you get an extra base out of each pack. I can't speak for infantry in C:SO but in earlier editions I'd field anywhere from 3 to 12 bases of infantry in a balanced force for an average sized game. You'd only need more if you're going for some kind of infantry-centric strategy like the old Rach berserkers list.

I love the look of the Simba Walker and I like the idea of a Mechanized force but the game is more CAV centric and to CAVBOSS' point infantry are a side note.

That said I've played a couple of stands before along with a Simba. A mechanized force requires a large investment into transports. The terrans have:

Merlin 123 pts carries 1 stand of PA Infantry

Tsukai 130 pts carries 1 stand of PA Infantry (2 if you take an upgrade to its capacity)

Simba 575 pts carries 2 stands of PA Infantry

The Simba is gorgeous but for its cost + the cost of its infantry it doesn't have enough impact on the battlefield. -imo. Unless the scenario specifically requires infantry to accomplish some objective.

I like fielding one mechanized infantry group with my force.  Not too much, but one group can be enough to force your opponent to deal with them once deployed.  I usually go for a central terrain piece / objective, or apply pressure units that are less equipped to fight infantry such as MAC or missile heavy units.

Thanks all for the newbie questions answered, another one when basing the HVY weapons PA do I just mix a few on a base or does it matter what each base has.

I'm used to playing FWC, DSII & epic so always had a lot of troops as well as vehicles but I can see the difference the Cav's bring to the table.

Oh yea a Dirtside style force will work fine in CAV.  A balanced approach with combined arms is really fun to play, especially if you plan out both sides of the table that way.

Even against CAVs, all it takes is (as an example) a couple Naginatas rolling around the corner and slagging one, and your opponent will learn to respect vehicles fast.  Some transports as well, check out the Kraken or Vindicator, they both have Wizzos and can punch respectably hard after air dropping their infantry.

Mortars may be worth a look if you want to try long range infantry that doesn't need a transport.

Powered Infantry

Powered infantry Heavy Weapons

Might use the PA 3 to a bas to get the extra base out of the packs but I think I'll keep the light infantry 4 to a base.

Back before the Boneyard, or Robot shop, what ever it was called, was disabled I picked up a good number of infantry. I haven't done anything with them yet, but plan on it soon. Got my Game Room back and am now setting it up and organizing my twenty minis . . .

I have no idea how effective it is now, but in older versions of the game I used to always include a section of infantry with anti-tank missiles and either drop  or use high speed transports to deploy them behind the opponent to attempt to disrupt their attention.  I had some other infantry-centric force builds, but don't know how well they'd work now.
