Mechanical Obliterator Redux (40k)

Recommended Posts

so....

The painting funk has lasted for 4 months, and I need to get my cranium out of my anal orifice and start painting again....

So....

While on the hangouts with some folks that play 40K, we have been talking about stuff, and I went to look for a figure that I knew I had, and didn't want, that @Chaoswolf thought was cool, and found the following:

001.thumb.JPG.a2ba640b47ec87a55b1a3bd31d395173.JPG

Now this is the basis for my mechanical Obliterators that I painted way back in 2003? and brought to Reapercon last year

mspopen_image.php?file=2107a.jpg&size=detail

where they got a silver medal in the open category

Speaking with one of the judges afterwards (@dks) we discussed them, and the painting dragged them down, as I said old paintjob...

Well, with my painting funk in its 4th month, I was thinking that maybe, I could re do a new one from scratch, and with all the sculpting things I have learned, as well as painting techniques, I might be able to do better...

Now Reaper forbids entering the same piece twice, but this would be a reprisal of something I did years ago....

Would this be legal as a new entry?

@Heisler care to comment?

George

@Heisler's response

As long as the entry is an entirely new piece and not one of those three then it would be a perfectly legal entry.

My response...

thanks @Heisler

really hoping this will kick out the brain weasel painting funk!

For some reason, I couldn't cross quote so....

It's gonna be ugly for a while....

the raw components:

001.thumb.JPG.8fa1883471435ea4e064ccfba8f1df36.JPG

lots and lots of surface grinding with the Dremel tool, and sore fingers.....

But hopefully, I've learne a bit about painting and sculpting since I did those guys, and this time, there will be only one....

Given that glitter gets everywhere, yeah, I could see you bring with Chaos.

Glittery blood for the death gods, make it all beautiful!  ... Or such ::P:

HOORAY, knarthex! You have been missed, George! If you must paint Space Marines, Chaos (especially Nurglely Chaos) is the way to go.

Have FUN, Old Drow!

Thanks Mal!

I absolutely do NOT do Nurgle.....

The whole reason I do Iron Warriors is that 'they will cut off mutation and replace it with bionics...'

From the fluff....

But to each their own...

I don't do Nurgle either, but it is one of those G.W. Thingies that I think is cool. The Adeptus Mech & Orks in 40 K are others I like & don't do.

My favorites were always Nurgle and Slaanesh.

The Iron Warriors are also very cool!

Go for it George!

Moar work....

Mold line removal from all over first....

Not really bad overall...

(Thank the Lords of Lead!)

General overview:

All the components....

Some close ups of individual parts:

Right arm parts pined:

I made a mistake in the way I cut the original Dreadnought legs apart, so I have more exposed sculpting to do on this arm...

The Multi Melta (Anti Tank Weapon) with the barrels drilled out, and obstructions to mounting removed...

And the Rocket Launcher, (The game calls them Missile Launchers, but that implies that they 'MISS'!011.thumb.JPG.2e3dce4d6d48d12e12aa40ff82fe4af6.JPG

012.JPG.03f45eca06150d6946cf014f48284af1.JPG

So the next step will be to start pushing putty around, to skin coat, fill gaps, etc.

Gotta say, feels really good to hobby again....

Thanks for looking and comments welcome!

Back in the "olden days" when I played 40k second edition, our game group played a lot of multi player games, and as a result, we sort of had a meta-game RPG going on with our Space Marine Chapters.  Thanks to the things that happened during the games, our chapters had allies and alliances and rivalries and foes.

Sometimes, to resolve disputes, we would hold a council meeting of the Chapters so grievances could be aired, agreements come to and consequences doled out. In these council meetings, each chapter got a vote.

But a problem emerged - some players had multiple chapters of their own design, and multiple players were playing official GW chapters, which meant that some people had multiple votes, while others had to share.  The solution we came up with was that for council votes, a chapter could be represented by a single fully painted miniature.

And so most of us painted up three or four minis as our vote "tokens". And here are mine from the 90s:

The guy on the left is one of my Marines Errant, which was my primary Chapter. The black and yellow guy is one of my Blast Hornets, a chapter that was declared renegade as the result of one of these council meetings. The two on the left are my voting minis, from the Fire Angels and Fire Hawks chapters.

Just before I moved away, we had a big council meeting coming up, and I hatched a dastardly plan. I bought two boxes of the cheapest Space Marines I could, and planned to paint up twenty more chapters, thus ensuring I could rule final vote. This was also going to be my parting gift - I was going to give each of the other players two of the minis.

Well, I didn't manage to do more than get those minis primed.  I recently found that box of primed Space Marines, and decided to see how well I could paint one of my Marines Errant 20+ years later, using Reaper's MSPs.

And then I decided I wanted to finally finish the project

Here are the first six. On the left is a Marines Errant, and on the right is a Salamander - the other four I just painted up and threw decals on.  I'll have to come up with chapter names for them later.

In lieu of a regular housewarming party my wife and I have opted to host a game day at our new house. After gathering supplies, prepping some food, and setting up some tables we're ready for our Housewarhammering.

As luck would have it I'm flush with terrain (couldn't sell a single piece at a local craft fair), so I set up a couple of simple tables. Though they're sparse looking I doubt they'll stay that way, my buddies really get into setting up tables. After their tinkering I'm sure the tables with look better and most of my "extra" pieces will get used.

Now it's just a matter of waiting for everyone to arrive. Guess I could play some PC Battlefleet Gothic Armada while waiting.

Orks are terrific, aren’t they? While the aesthetics and logic behind most 40k factions tries to toe the line between Full Blanche and minimally plausible weapons of war, the Space Orks just embrace the most absurd logic (a red paint job actually makes it go faster).
This conversion was created by my client- and I really love it. Orks looting vehicles from Imperial factions is always great, but there’s something especially amazing about looting the claw of a titan and turning it into a tank.
For the paint job, the titan claw is meant to look like the Orks painted over the original Titan’s color scheme. To this end, some of the scratches in the red show blue and imperial insignias and patterns underneath.

With my wife and I preparing to buy a house we've been clearing out a lot of our clutter to make packing and moving easier. We've also been working hard to bring in extra money too, and this project will hopefully do both.

Today my wife signed up for a craft fair to help sell the wreaths she's been making for the upcoming holidays. From what she's heard from friends and other crafters this particular craft fair is really eclectic and pulls in quite a diverse crowd. As she told me about it that's when the idea seemed to hit us both, why not try to clear out all that terrain junk I've been hoarding?

So instead of sitting down and painting or creating my latest joke piece I got started. First up was a couple of single tent encampments. I made one on a rounded base to better fit in a table of terrain and I made the second one squared to fit better on a grid system.

Both pieces have their good and bad points but like usual I learn by doing; no amount of research or prep work make up for actual experience. Which is the main reason I made these single tent camps. Hopefully I've learned enough to make any subsequent larger camps better.

Next up are a couple of joke pieces that were honestly going to get made anyway. That's right, they'll be 40k statues when I'm done with them, besides Buzz looks kinda like a space marine already. I had some glue left over so I also started making some sci-fi barrels and I know I'll be making a ton of those.

The last piece of the night is going to be a simple 40k watchtower. At the moment it's really just in its infancy. The main features are finished barring creating a door and applying some details to the piece.

Now before anyone gets too excited, I'm not selling any of these pieces online or anything like that. These are literally pieces that are made to be sold for less than five bucks or so and are really only being made to clear out my hobby hoardings.

Been working on this project for some time now, and hoping to get it done for a local competition in september.
Still a lot to do, but I'm mostly happy with what I have made so far..
I bought a bits-box with loads of Wahammer bits, and decided to try and sculpt a bigger tyranid out those bits, as a maine character for the scene. I find the sculpting as fun as the painting..and well, the Warhammer stuff seems rather expensive.
I know nothing of the Warhammer 40K world, so it also been fun reading and researching for stuff.

This will be a scene in the Wahmmaer 40K world. Three tau XV25's and one drone (not pictured) are behind enemy lines, and attack some sort of Tyranid base..

First two pictures a finished minis, A Tau XV25 (its a battle-suit with a 'tau-person' inside), and a small tyranid.

Next is the big tyranid, grey stuff is from the bits box, light-brown is Fimo sculpting clay and green is green-stuff. It is mostly done, but need a bit of grinding a maybe a few more details. The tail is going to end into next picture, where the tau is in big trouble (or is he?). The tau is painted, but the tail is just sculpted and a few strokes of priming.
The part where the tail is shot to pieces is made of small pieces of fishing line, white-glue and sculpting paste. I glued the fishing line more or less randomly in place with super-glue-gel, super glue to hold the two pieces of tail in place. Covered everything with water thinned white-glue. put on some blobs af sculpting paste and covered everything in water-thinned white glue again.

Last pictures is the base, mostly just primed. The tau's are attacking from the left side of the first picture, and the small tyranid will be lurking in the cave.

Feel free to suggest, critiq and comment on anything, thanks for looking.
