I'm not painting the dwarfs like literal jade because I'd like them to also be useful later as, y'know, dwarfs. The book cover (I'm not allowed to crack the contents yet) makes them look kind of earth-toney anyhow.

Meyanda, however, I am painting totally jade.

Except for her eyes, all greens here are a single mix of Phthalocyanine Green and Burnt Sienna, lightened with Titanium White to make it opaque.

Her irises are pure Phthalo Green layered on transparently.

I painted the dwarves with a variety of normal human complexions. The pale ones are largely mixes of Titanium White and Burnt Sienna, with a little Yellow Ochre sometimes. The darker ones are Titanium White and Burnt Umber, highlighted with more white and Yellow Ochre added. Lips are mostly Red Iron Oxide with some Titanium White, shadowed with Burnt Umber. Eyes are all Burnt Umber with sclera of pale grey mixed from Titanium White and Carbon Black.

Some of them came out a little more successfully than others.

Face details. Again, some work better than others.

The main advantage of these extreme close ups is they can show things I can't see with the naked eye, even under magnification:

Also, note to self. Apparently my paintbrush had some minuscule lint in it (aughhh). Please note the need for repairs in the following faces:

The guy with the warhammer is my favorite so far!

That’s Hasslefree’s HFD014 Hatherley. He has a lot of character and a Muppet-like face.

Oooooh, my. The skin tone on Kara is lovely!

... What did we decide Burnt Umber and yellow Ochre look like in Reaper MSP? I'll need to try this.

...I feel like you can say that about most HF minis. Which is why I'm sad I have none in my collection.

A few Kev White pieces that I like a bunch, but nothing from HF proper.

So far as I know, Yellow Ochre is "Palomino Gold" in the Reaper line. I'm not sure what, if anything, Burnt Umber would be.

Well, his dwarfs, yes. His human women are a little more glamorous guest star and a little less Muppet.

I did not have a lot of time to paint today, so I sketched in the hair colors on the dwarves.

This is where I use a very simple palette to remind me of what I want their hair colors to be, which will be used as undertones later.

Two of them were laid in in solid Carbon Black.

This one was Burnt Umber with a wash of Carbon Black.

Two redheads (because dwarfs have lots of gingers, yes?). These were laid in with a mix of Red Iron Oxide and Yellow Ochre, then washed with a bit of Burnt Sienna.

A back view of the Red Box dwarf's hair, because wow (some still wet spots in the photo, I see).

Blonde hair for the pretty dwarf princess. This is pure Yellow Ochre with a wash of Burnt Sienna and then Burnt Umber (not mixed). On the whole I find actual blonde hair to be a much drabber color than expected, but as a placeholder I'm okay with going with a strong yellow.

And the old Ral Partha dwarf seer gets, well, this is actually a quite greyish mix of Titanium White and Burnt Umber, laid on very thinly.

Ah, Palomino Gold. Yes. The Burnt Umber is rich enough that I'm tempted to give the Palomino Gold a try with Blackened Brown and see what I get.

... But then, I'll mix anything with Blackened Brown, so maybe I'm just saying that.

And, you're right about the HF ladies. But they all have a characterfulness that reminds me of Muppets, even if they aren't so Muppetationally proportioned.

Doesn't Tre do wonders with hair? Great fun to paint.
