I've used it, and have painted two out of three of the minis from it.  Definitely a lot of interesting tidbits in it, and I like how it walks you through techniques I never would have tried (at least for quite some time I suspect).  Additionally, I like how they're priced so it's barely more than the cost of paints - you get some decent starter brushes (although there have been mixed reports on their longevity), three miniatures, and a nice case to store your paints in.

These next ones aren't mine, but by @Sophie was taken..

What @WhiteWulfesaid! I’d add that it has a nice selection of starter paints and the directions are informative and easy to follow.

But as said above, the brushes can be hit or miss. I’ve done all the LTPKs since the previous five (now OOP) and the brushes don’t always last the length of the two or three included minis. On the other hand, the brushes from the last kit have seen several months of regular use and are still going strong.

As a beginner/returning to the hobby after a long absence, it was definitely a worthwhile purchase for me.

I've got the first bones ltpk and a bunch of other paints from kickstarters as well as their Christmas colors set and lived the first one but really wanted to try this next one. As far as the brushes I understand cause after using the first kit them putting or and the brushes awed for a couple weeks I pulled it out and the dry brush brush looked like it had been dipped in acid and disintegrated. Not quite sure why, I washed and took care of them. Either way looking forward to this next kit!

I won't add to the LTPK info, as people have covered that.  One thing though on the brush issue: I always recommend to new painters that once you get to the "Yep, i like this and am going to keep doing it" stage, get a high quality Kolinski sable brush; round, size 0 or 1.  By this I mean a Windsor & Newton Series 7, DaVinci, or Rosemary and Co brush.

This is especially important if you will be doing the layering method of highlighting (never dry brush with a good sable brush). The ability to control the paint and advance will be markedly improved by having a good tool that you aren't fighting against continuously. These brushes are typically in the $10 to $20 range online.  I typically get mine from Blick.

Same, but only because I had an issue with customs when I ordered directly from Rosemary & Co.  It was a weird situation, and probably atypical, but I now take the easier route for my brushes.

The brushes in the kits can vary a little due to variability in Reaper's supply chain availability. Other than product packaging and things like that, brushes are one of the few things they purchase from other manufacturers. As the author of the kit I would love it if everyone who buys one were able to use exactly the same kind of brush I did, but in the real world that's not always possible.

So in addition to Talespinner's excellent advice about buying a quality brush for painting details (for real, don't think you have to be a superstar painter to get a quality brush!), I would add there's no harm in picking up another synthetic brush or two if you find the kit brushes are wearing out.

My Rosemary and Co brushes made an IMMEDIATE difference in my brush control. I still have a long way to go but it was kind of amazing what a difference it made.

I'll 2nd what a quality brush can do for you.  I was quite surprised how much my "craft" brushes were holding me back on doing details.  They have a role, but a good kolinsky is incredible and will last a long time if taken care of!

So update my order with my layer up kit showed up today and some how I got it mixed up and accidentally ordered the original core kit which I already had. I did get some different paints in that kit and also got 2 extra paints for the first time and was super excited(charred brown and spectral blue) which were lacked extra thick pigments? Are those different from other paints or have different purposes? Moral of the story double check that order before you click submit lol. P.s. wonderful wife felt bad and already ordered the correct kit lol

Oof, that must sting.  I just got into the hobby.  I've been playing around with the Basic kit for two weeks now, really love the instructions, and ended up ordering the Layer Up kit because a) great reviews and more importantly b) my Basic kit does not come with any red.  I've got oodles of earth tone, but missing a primary color.  That's how they get ya!  Really though, I'm very excited, and please post your own experience when it arrives in the mail!

My extra kit went to my daughter who has been enjoying painting since she was 3-4.  I gave it to her a couple years ago so she would have her own place to store her own paints and brushes.  At 8 she now has so many brushes I had to give her a brush case I got from Wamp but did not need.  If you don't have any kids to get into the hobby with you try a friend.  You already know what a great kit it is so get someone else hooked!

lol! I did not specifically design the first kit with the idea of excluding colours. But my focus was on picking a set of colours that would work to paint the three figures and demonstrate the techniques rather than being a complete set of colours. Once that kit was done I did want to choose colours for the second kit that would fill in the biggest gaps of colour from the first kit - skin tones and reds. The second kit also has completely different brushes. So the two together complement each other to form a pretty well-rounded starter set as well as working individually for the skills.
