TheAuldGrump
I am worried about the results of the live catch mousetrap... Megan was looking at hamster cages.... (She has enough common sense to know that pet mice + pet cats = bad idea, but this does not stop the stray thought.) Ah, well - Megan has been zonked since around 7, time I crawl into bed as well. The Auld Grump - assuming that she isn't planning to give the mice to someone else..... (We haven't even caught any yet.)

It... did not do much. Didn't do badly, looked fine, just didn't do anything. So over the winter I moved it to a south facing window with some afternoon sun, the "sunniest" place in my night-shift/day-sleeping studio apartment. It's leaves are still nice and dark (not suffering from too much light) and it's growing all the hell over (not under-fertilized). I water it with the leftovers of whatever glass I've been drinking out of (backwash instead of fertilizer is how my dad's orchids all look amazing). As an orchid it looks great. New leaves are all dark and shiny and big. Air roots are growing quickly as it decides to claim ownership of the window, trying to crawl out the window as far as I can tell. Just... No flowers for a year and a half. I know they only flower once a year (for three to five months at a time), maybe our utter lack of spring did it. I'll know next year. Unless it tries to eat me first Orchids are picky about their lighting conditions. Phals in particular like 12 and 12 and flower when the light cycle gets about an hour shorter but may refuse if it's 3 or 4 hours shorter. Cattelaya and oncidiums tend to bloom as the days begin to get longer, some also trigger by getting wetter after a dry spell or seeing an increase in phosphates (rainy season) those are the best tricks I know to get them to flower. Their cycles can be really weird. The ant orchid wants nitrates and phosphate because it won't flower until it thinks there is a healthy ant colony living inside it providing additional fertilizer. I'd play with the light cycle followed by letting it dry out for a week or two and then hitting it with some repeated soaking. However, do note there are a few virus out there that sterilize the orchids. Lots of lush growth but no flowers. My phals usually put up a flower spike between thanksgiving and new years.

Well it was quiet enough that I could catch up after a moms weekend in Sonoma. I've seen so much wine, even if I wasn't drinking too much myself. It was the first time any of us have done anything like that, and it was nice. Got to see redwoods, check out some beach sand and didn't see the smoke from the wild fires until heading home.

(I explained the redneck dragon to her - she picked up on how it can be used as a nuisance encounter as well as a full fledged encounter immediately. (Nuisance encounter - cinder flames the party as a fly by, and then continues on his merry way - laughing as he goes. Used properly, the party hates him, long before they get a chance to actually do proper battle.) Sam never encountered Cinder in my game - instead they got the grumpy black dragon. (The black is closer to the Chaotic Neutral side of Chaotic Evil - and mostly just wanted to be left alone. Cinder is a lot more aggressive, and thinks that flaming people is a hoot and a holler.) The Auld Grump - Sam really likes the idea of the dragon flaming the party, and flying away... because it would have annoyed the heck out of her! It occurs to me that for a Redneck Dragon a fly by flaming of peope is the equivalent of loading up the pickup and the shotgun and going hunting for road signs.
