Randomness XIV: THE FLOOR IS LAVA!

Recommended Posts

Megan has told me that she can almost always tell what game I am working on, and how much she should worry, just by what music I am playing....

Tonight, I came home while she was working on her game, and this was playing -

I'm bleedin' terrified!

Just kidding... Clearly she's looking to acquire the one thing that can kill an immortal pirate.

(Which apparently seems to be an issue in the hotel business. ::P:)

I just gave the wizard in my Stonehell campaign a summon demon spell... I have no idea if she'll use it...

What's gonna happen if she does?

Nothing good.  The ability to Summon a Demon in no way confers the ability to Control it.

I want to paint but it's ridiculously hot. Maybe I'll wait until the sun starts going down a little more.

I know the feeling. I've done a lot of prep work lately. And A bit of slapping paint on terrain.

Last workday before vacation.

The stupid thing is that I'm looking forward to the vacation, but I have a severe case of brainweasels that prevents me from feeling good.

Right now I would be happy crawling under a rock and stay there for a while.

Sorry to hear it; I hope your vacation relaxes you.

In the meantime, take two of these and call your doctor if necessary:

Thank you!

I hope it will be alright, and it probably will.

Mostly I'm worried about things I shouldn't be worried about.

The mind knows but the weasels try to put doubts in me.

Sigh. It was around 70F all night, and I left windows open when I went to work. So why the heck is my house still 85F when I come home 8 hours later!? It's hotter inside than out, and I can't do anything to fix it, it seems.

Also, it's proving to be more than a little bit difficult to purchase replacement parts for an AC condenser unit. And I'm not talking about the refrigerants or the pumps or anything like that. I'm talking about the capacitor and the contactor(basically a fancy switch) that turn the dang thing on and which are the two most common points of failure. For one, its a case of part numbers being confusing, thanks to largely undocumented deprecation and replacement of parts. Then, unless you're a licensed HVAC technician a lot of the more helpful places that can walk you through the part number changes won't sell the parts to you. I can find places online that sell the parts, but none of them have the parts for my now 15-ish year old condenser unit because all of those part numbers are no longer made because they've been replaced by other part numbers and they don't have the list of "this replaces X part numbers."

At least in the case of the capacitor I was able to find the modern version of the one that's currently there, and the only difference is a slight change in size that will require me to bend the mounting bracket a little. It's skinnier and longer than the old one, or so I've read, despite being the same actual part from the same manufacturer. The contactor is another story. I can find similar, but not the same. And it's making me a bit crazy. All I want to do is try to fix the AC without having a repair bill in the multiple hundreds...

senses Glitterwolf's distress and comes running wearing a surgeon's smock and carrying an ice cream scoop

Don't worry my glitter furred friend!  I'm pretty sure I have a degree in brain weaselology that qualifies me to scoop out the unwanted parts of the old grey matter without any lasting side effects!

has brief moment of doubt

Or was that a summer internship at Baskin Robbins?

shrugs off doubts and raises his ice cream scoop again

No matter, I'm sure it will work out either way!

Well, I found a contactor that is purported to be the same as the one I need. That said, the details on it were scant. It doesn't have the full tech specs listed, and the image is so grainy that I couldn't make out the ratings on the label. I suspect it's a stock image of a single pole contactor and not of the one in question, because they all look the same. However, it was listed as being a replacement for the exact part number on my current one, a 100438-01, where every other one I saw was listed as a replacement for a 100438-04. And all of those were 25/35 amp, while the one I have is a 25/30. I assume that they were simply further revisions of the same unit, but I was hesitant to up my ampacity out of fear for the other components. I don't know that it would have made any real difference, but I want to be safe and try not chance it.

Now to wait for the part to arrive. They've already made a shipping label for it, so maybe I'll get lucky and it shows up sooner rather than later. That said, I'm now pretty sure the primary problem is the capacitor. I manually switched the current contactor to its on state, and I could hear the compressor trying, but failing, to start. And that's a sign that the capacitor isn't providing enough juice. If I had a decent multimeter, like a Fluke 117, I'd be able to test the capacitor and be sure, but I only have a no-name cheapo that's basically only good for testing voltage and resistance.

The contactor could still be bad, though. So both are getting replaced...
