Randomness XIV: THE FLOOR IS LAVA!

British tank design and production was a mess for nearly all of world War 2 and the Covenanter was an especially poor example. In the end it was only used by training units and never issued to units in combat, so it's very brave of you to fight in it!

It may have started slow, but it gave us my favorite tank design of the war by the end. The Cromwell. It may be boxy, it may have been under gunned, but that Meteor engine, Merrit-Brown transmission, and Christie suspension combined into an incredibly quick 28 ton machine that could turn on a dime, relatively speaking. It's just a shame that they couldn't get the 75mm high velocity gun into it, because the regular OQF 75mm gun was it's biggest drawback. But World of Tanks let's you put the Vickers 75mm HV in, so that makes it even better!

But then they ruined it by making the Comet. The Comet could have been good, if it had been given a better engine. But keeping the Meteor, adding another 5 tons of weight, and not learning the lessons of sloped armor make it both slow and boxy. It does have a 17pder as its gun, though, and the redesigned turret has better gun depression and is rounder on the sides, so at least they learned something. It's just a shame that it couldn't be fast, too...

But then, I have a love for armored vehicles that are fast, nimble, and can pack a punch. Like the M18 Hellcat tank destroyer, and the M24 Chaffee light tank. The Stryker Mobile Gun System was like a wet dream when I heard about it. An LAV that's got an autoloading 105mm cannon? When can I buy one for my daily driver?

In Amarillo and kicked back at the Days Inn.

Ha! I guessed right! Wife and I were wondering where you would stop.

You’ve gone from where I lived once to where I grew up.

I claim no connection to DFW despite the bodies there abouts.

Model Master Gloss Clear Acryl was the brush on sealant. It’s never done this to me before.... gah!

I've used the Model Masters spray on sealer/matte finish but never a brush on.

With my model raiolroading background and the use of chalks and powdered pigments for  so many weathering effects, that would be destroyed by the touch of a brush loaded with clear coat, it never even occured to me that a brush on sealer would even be possible.

May your touch up work go swiftly and smoothly.

There are even flours made from ground up nuts that make really tasty cookies or cakes. I had an almond flour cake that was super tasty. Sadly I never got the recipe and don't have much contact with those people any more.

We will see what tomorrow brings but I am planning oatmeal scotchies, probably peanut or almond butter cookies (because somebody made fat and protein balls I cant touch), and maybe some toll house or something like that.  once i get started, its easier just to keep making until i run out of an ingredient.

Damn it! The hard sealant took paint off some spots of my vignette. Time for touch ups. And probably more touch ups at the con.  *whimper*

This is why i would rather risk rubbing issues and repaints than use sealer.  i have had too many paint jobs destroyed by a slight color shift or something getting wiped out by the dullcote or sealer, or I mess up the spray and wind up with orange peel or droplets, or a myriad of other miseries.  Of course I will probably be spending Thursday fixing rub spots so its sort of a choice of evils.

It was tentatively planned as a reasonable distance to drive on the second day that would put us in relatively easy driving distance to Denton.

If things work out as planned I will have eyeballs on the HQ Hotel and able to give a first impression tomorrow evening.

If timing works out for Wednesday I might be able to take my wife to the afternoon screening of South Pacific [part of the Fathom Events / TCM special events program for this year] at one of the local theaters and get back in time for the Meet & Greet.  Key factor will be if I'm able to handle that much "noise" for as long as will be necessary without wiping  me out to the point where I can't enjoy the con.  8^/

It's no fun having to balance time in public like I am forced to.  8^{

So far, the trip has been fun but I'm maxing out on meds every night to get by.

The brush on sealer I use is basically a clear coat of acrylic. Then dullcote takes off the shine. I always have a sacrificial mini (Bones, tabletop quality) that I test the dullcote on because Florida humidity....

then after the sealant any grass or flocking is added. I don’t have any tufts the right color for this scene, though I’ll probably check the dealer’s room Thursday just in case....

What color are you looking for? I may have gone overboard on a couple of tuft orders...

I need a good, solid green or maybe a dark green. The vines in the vignette are Jungle Moss > Viper Green > Moth Green, And I feel like the Army painter Jungle Tufts are too yellow-green...

So far I've gone to bed, gotten up, removed superglue from my luggage

gone to bed, gotten up, packed my ottlight now that the battery has charged, tested my new DVD drive

gone to bed, gotten up, packed extra drill bits, happy seppaku molds, an exacto knife, and a paperclips

gone to bed, gotten up, added 2 finished bones figures, and a couple in progress/unpainted bones that will relate to the classes I'm taking...

I can't find my greenstuff... I just bought a fresh pack last week... someone at the con will be selling greenstuff, right? Right?

Happy to say you are right, although the P-51 Mustang is probably the best of all. (Once it got the Merlin Engine.)

Very good airplane for its role. The trick with WWII fighters is that you have to consider how they're being used. The P-51 was intended as a long-ranged escort fighter, and for that it was probably the best of the war. For long-range interceptor work, the P-38 was very good, but it couldn't really compete with Axis short-range interceptors. For short-range interceptors, the Me-262 and Fw-190 were both very, very good.

With the available aerodynamic and power-plant technology, it simply wasn't possible to build an airplane that excelled in all those roles.

It may have started slow, but it gave us my favorite tank design of the war by the end.

Of the available WWII tanks, I'd take the 76mm M-4 Medium (the Sherman with the long 76), note that I wouldn't want the Firefly, as its gun really made working the tank difficult.

The tank was very survivable in combat, had a gun that was good enough to defeat any enemy tank at normal engagement ranges, and it had an unmatched maintenance record, so had a much higher availability rate than pretty much anything else during the war.

I'm pretty sure you'll be able to buy it there, but if not, I'm also sure you can beg some from any of about a hundred other people who will have it, including me.

It's easy to obsess about things right before a trip, but remember that you'll be in a major metropolitan area with all the stores that you're used to (and getting a ride, or somebody to run an errand shouldn't be much of a problem) and that there will be a bunch of other people who have the same sorts of supplies that you normally use and who would be happy to help you out.

Just be prepared to have fun. ^_^

This looks suspiciously like my packing method....

Which is why I'm doing things different and packing tomorrow morning instead of evening, so that will give me all day to remember things to toss in, which will hopefully let my brain relax enough to sleep. And I'm gonna need at least some sleep, since my flight leaves at the ungodly hour of 5am Wednesday. :zombie:

Look up Paleo recipes.

I have made some very tasty cakes using almond flour for instance.

I think I have a recipe for a cinnamon cake using almond flour.

Need to look it up
