They seem to hassle me less now that they've got my background check and biometrics on file. No. Not worth it for the 2-3 times a year I fly these days. Would have been nice if they had had it 10+ years ago. I used to fly more, but things changed. I started having more trips that needed more flexibility in start and end dates, and I was sick and tired of the TSA and the airlines. So for most of my trips, I usually just rent a car and drive on any trip that will take less than 12 hours. In the end, it generally pays off, especially now that I'm more centrally located in the US. There are some destinations I still have to fly to, though. I hate those trips - can't take everything I need, and it seems I spend a full day traveling to/from anyway. Still, even though I'm not that frequent of a flyer anymore, and don't like it, I've made sure to learn everything I can do to make the process as smooth as possible.

Gotta love the airlines! Without certified scales they have legal cover for "claiming ignorance" and then using that as an excuse to soak people for extra money via phony overweight billing. It won't stop until there are laws in place to penalize this sort of grift. GEM 4

Have her read Starship troopers by Heinlein before she goes Having READ that book got me through basic.... Basic Training should be viewed by all gamers from the perspective of Game Theory. It's a carefully constructed program to efficiently break a person down mentally so that they may be rebuilt into a personality capable of withstanding the mental as well as the physical rigors of bringing silly-villians up to speed with the requirements for Discipline and Self Control required to be a useful member of a military unit. If a person already has had discipline and self control instilled in them they can go with the flow very easily and find it entertaining to watch the tactics used by the D.I.'s to bring those without the requisite discipline up to speed. Of course, you as the observer never ever want to give the D.I. any clue that they are beingn watched and are actually part of the entertainment at Camp Boot, while you are learning all that basic Martine Corps [or any other service] stuff. One of the most interesting facets of my own Navy Boot Camp [in 1969] was watching all the kids who had never been subjected to "Rules and Discipline" growing up suddenly be confronted with the necessity to obey, and do it imediately, any shouted order. I had many situations where it was like watching panicked sheep while I carefully listened, responded, and did what was demanded as quickly as humanly possible [and still got yelled at because, well, it's part of the program of course]. GEM May your soon to be Boot quickly become someone who has earned the title of Marine!

TheAuldGrump
That moment when you find out that Frog God Games has a Pathfinder Bundle up on Humble Bundle, run right over.... And discover that you already own every single one of those products.... For $15 you get an enormous pile of seriously good Pathfinder material. (I can especially recommend The Complete Bard's Gate - kind of the opposite of The Blight, and excellent, in a completely different way.) The terrain books - Mountains of Madness, Marshes of Malice, Fields of Blood and Dunes of Desolation - are also excellent - and Mountains of Madness has Pathfnder rules for Haemorrhagic Fever.... The Auld Grump *EDIT* Sent a link to Sam's parents - I think that Sam might have a better time running Bard's Gate than The Blight. Even I think that The Blight is dark. *EDIT 2* To be clear - that is my opinion - last I heard from Sam, she was loving The Blight.... And took most of them alive, in the hopes that there will be a reward for capture. Funny, it doesn't look like Mr. Gygax prepared for that eventuality.... (And Sam is crowing that she told them that buying a cart would pay for itself. She gets to pat herself on the back for telling them, and they get to pat themselves on the back for listening.) I have decided that, yes, there is a reward for capture - and that the information obtained from the brigands may lead to further adventure... later. There is only two weeks or so left in this mini-campaign, then it is back to Legacy of Fire. Next week, ghouls and crawdads.... The Auld Grump The cart is another example of how having the miniature can create the demand.... The Auld Grump
Green Eyed Monster
So far ReaperCon is is proving to be a very worthwhile to come to event. As anticipated my wife is having to deal with a severe case of bewilderment/culture shock. She's about decided that tomorrow will be spent hiding in our room, which is actually a suite that is better appointed than our own home. Of course, this place is brand new as of mid-January and Hilton has built into it every improvement, bell, and whistle they could think up, including a bluetooth connected bathroom mirror [that I haven't tried to connect up to my tablet yet] so it still has that "New Hotel" smell and feel. Our home is comfortably well broken in [and we like it, precious] but it is nice to see all the "improvements" that are possible. Not sure I really like the touch plate light switches, the virtual sliders don't respond as fast or as well as a good old fashioned knob does. Only downside is that, as anticipated, I hit "the wall" about an hour ago. Felt the warning signs and took pre-emptive measures medication wise so hopefully I nipped it in the bud and will be OK in the AM, whick comes much earlier here than at home as we are two time zones east of our normal cycle. I like him, so I don't mind talking to him, but I figured out a long time ago that if I wait 30 minutes before calling him back, he'll usually have it figured out. 50 pounds is a lot. But I have to carry tools and pars for work, and thanks to the TSA causing my stuff to be damaged three times because they just throw stuff back in the suitcase after inspecting it, I had to move to a large hard sided suitcase. It weighs ten pounds just by itself, and inside that I pack everything else in soft sided zipper bags. So I am regularly at 40+ pounds when I fly for work between the suitcase and the tools. I would have preferred to go with two smaller suitcases - one hardsided for my tools & parts, and one soft sided for my other stuff, but the airlines want to charge for that, too. One of my friends started traveling with a firearm's upper receiver in his checked luggage after the TSA tore through his stuff one time and some of his things went "missing." He has to fill out extra paperwork for his stuff, because he's legally transporting a firearm(upper receiver is what's classified as the actual firearm by law), but he was telling me it also means that the bag has to be locked and he has to be present if they open his luggage at any time. They can't open his suitcase without him being present because of the legal ramifications of a stolen firearm. 4 hours ago, TheAuldGrump said: That moment when you find out that Frog God Games has a Pathfinder Bundle up on Humble Bundle, run right over.... Pezler the Polychromatic
On Tuesday morning I happened to be checking things on my computer when I heard a *THUD* outside. I thought it was odd, considering that I have a northern exposure and usually my window has no reflection, but then again the day was overcast. When I peeked out I found this on my terrace: This little guy was like this but upside down, and he was knocked the flumph out after he had hit my window. I flipped him right-side up and let him recover for a little while. He had started waking up after about 15 minutes, though he was still really groggy for a long time. I kept an eye on him in case my neighbour's cat came around, but it had been raining so it was unlikely that the giant lump would be outside. As near as I could tell, I believe that this is an Alder Flycatcher (I knew it was a good idea to buy my mom the really good bird book). He started to perk up a bit more after 40 minutes, and after an hour it was strong enough to fly off, probably in search of tiny ibuprofen pills.
