Chronicles of RIDDICK!

I've not seen any of the stuff Vin's produced himself, but I have seen XXX and Fast and the Furious as well as Pitch Black and I have to say, he's not bad in my opinion. He does have a certain look which sets him apart from other actors nowadays, kinda edgy, and he played Riddick very well in Pitch Black. I thoroughly enjoyed that film, and I'm eagerly awaiitng the Cronicles... in fact I may watch it tonight.

I encourage my SR players to come up with a picture of their character, and some of my real life group have used actors or pictures from films. I can't remember which film it is from, but one of my players' character is called Pheonix and he looks lik Vin Diesel.

Some of his films have a RPG feel, while others, like the Fast and the furious, just seem off to me. Course, that could be because I ain't into the SPC scene,

Not to be a thread Necromancer but....

Since I'm not one to drag girls to movies they don't want to see, I gave this one a wide berth in theaters. But I just saw this movie on DVD and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was interesting, exciting, cool, fun, good sci-fi camp characters, decent FX, great sound, and reasonable plot (I like that they didnt bother explaining anything). It really seemed to me that this is the kind of movie sci-fi fans would like to see, and the kind of movie a sci-fi novelist might right (as opposed to simple monster hunt sci fi flicks). Reminded me a bit of stargate.

Just looked at the critic reveiws this movie got when it originally came out and it got hammered. Yet on every fan reveiw site I looked at it's sitting at like 4.5 / 5.0

It also did terribly in theatres ($57M US market for a $100M cost).

Will there be a third movie? I really hope so I thought it was great fun. But the box office results suggest the next one will not happen or be a lower budget (perhaps for the best).

But my main question is: Was this movie just too geeky for the general public?

I thought it was just OK. A little overacted on Vin's part (or perhapd underacted, depending on your POV), and I tend to shy away from "fantasy" elements in my SF, SW excepted. This is one of the reasons why I had a huge problem with the movie "Event Horizon" that came out over 10 years ago; throughout the movie when the nature of Black Holes was explained, my BS meter went into overtime. I guess it doesn't help that I know a bit about the subject. I guess I'm much more critical about SF than I am of anything else (historical and war movies excepted).

Watched it twice in the theatre, really enjoyed it, much more depth than 9.5/10 scifi, war, or action flicks made, and it was all three. It seemed to do a lot of plot tidying and so-on so it could well be that the next movie won't need the same budget.

I'll be getting the DVD. I thought it was a much more interesting speculative fiction myth than Star Wars, frankly.

Edit: I speak of COR, Event Horizon was pretty dull to me, but my idea of scary is bent. The Mothman Prophecies scared hell outta me, but buckets of blood just make me think "Meh". OR, in the case of EH, "I've played this game. The chainsaw is hidden on the ledge outside! Let's GO!"

Heh... the critique of the true geek (no insult intented, we are all geeks here). The problem is Hollywood is talking to the 99% of the people who don't know these details, wouldn't care about em, and would be bored by em. Other people who do recognize these issues (COR: err... how can a planet with a breathable atmosphere have a 900 degree celcius temperature differential from the day to night side????) have two choices: let it tick you off even a little, or ignore these technical goofs and relax and enjoy the movie. Heck, I was even able to enjoy Day after Tomorrow and that had more fantasy elements in it than LOTR.

And of course, completely following the technical rules (be it historical or scientific accuracy) can easily suck the life out of the story unless the dir/prod is a superior one. See the reveiws of OS new film. "The acting is horrible. But man. You have to see this movie cuz they don't use stirrups! Seriously? Awesome!" <--- not a conversation I expect to hear at the water cooler.
