Dung Beetle Knight

Recommended Posts

He's beautiful! I wouldn't have guessed dung beetle; I'd have guessed at some tropical glorious bug! What are the main colors you used in that armor? They're wonderful.

Ok, that's absolutely lovely and I like it a bunch, especially the wings... But where's his ball of dung?! I want to see how you treat that, too!

You did an amazing work on him. The copper vs. green are contrasting beautifully together. The pastel colors of the wings are very beautiful as well. And, you did a great work on the shading!

I painted it in browns... and I need to find the pictures so I can show you (they're on one of these SD cards somewhere).

Thanks.  Some of what I think is making him work is the contrasting shading and highlighting.  It is a technique I learned from Zach Lanier- you highlight to a cold color, then to a warm color, and do the same with the shading (warm, then cold).  Even if it is super subtle, it seems to make the colors all look super interesting.

I've talked to Jessica Rich and Marike about an easier way to do it.  After you're done with your highlights and shadows, take a thin contrasting glaze and add it over the second darkest shadows (so the darkest area remains the same).  It works especially well on skin.

Presenting Angry Joe, the last of my Survivors from the Gigalion expansion from Kingdom Death. He believes the best defence against monsters is to wear a suit made of their skin.

Had a lot of fun painting this one, Gorm armour is my favourite set despite all the little details, now I just need to paint the Gigalion itself.

Presenting Skully, the third member of my Gigalion expansion from Kingdom Death. She likes skulls and has a pet rock.

I think this is the weakest of the Survivors, it's not a bad mini but it's a bit of an awkward sculpt that doesn't make a whole lot of sense out of context. Was still fun to paint though.

Presenting Lady Fancy Hair, my second Survivor from the Gigalion expansion from Kingdom Death, she's into whips and leather belts.

Had this one sitting unfinished for a while (I got burnt out painting her fancy hair), but as I currently have a renewed interest in my Kingdom Death stuff, I thought I'd try and get her finished.

Presenting the Cleric, part of the second Echoes of Death set from Kingdom Death, not sure why she has such a gruesome base insert, none of the others came with one.

Disappointingly, she looks pretty terrible in the piccys. Honestly, apart from her decidedly wonky eyes, I thought I'd done a fairly good job.

Presenting the Storm Knight from Kingdom Death.

Second time tackling this one (I like it that much!), I think I prefer my newer, colourful version but I still struggled to do a decent job on his cloud cape, I think it needs more time and effort put into it than I have the patience for.
