May 3: Do you know a second (or more!) language or would you like to learn one someday?

I took two years of Spanish in high school.  I can pick up the random word or phrase but am certainly not fluent.  I can "read" hiragana and katakana (and thus furigana) but not kanji so that doesn't get me very far.  It doesn't help that my Japanese vocab is also very minimal.

While I’m an American, I’ve been to Newfoundland a couple of times, so I think I get the joke. ::P:

But taking it semi-seriously, even leaving out the Francophones, my impression was that there was a lot of dialectical variation. A store clerk in St. John’s who I could barely follow explained to me on one of those visits that her relatives up the coast “talked so Irish” that she could barely understand them. Perhaps she was pulling my leg, but she seemed sincere...

That there is. And I'm not talking about simply comparing townies to baymen to Labradorians.

It's been said that every outport in Newfoundland had their own dialect. We're talking about an island where for a long time, many villages were only accessible by sea.

First week I worked there was bewildering as I slowly adjusted to the accent(s) and dialect(s).

As with most people in Hong Kong, I can speak English, Cantonese and a little bit of Mandarin.

I'll also be honest and admit that, while I'm not averse to learning more languages, I don't really have the drive or motivation to do so.

May 4: Star Wars thing! What other geek* hobbies or shows are you into? Mini painting is assumed here. ;)

*I hesitate to use the word "geek" here as meanings and connotations change quickly. Many "nerdy" things 15 years ago have become "mainstream." Language is wild!

I want to get better at sculpting those minis, of course. ::D: I'll watch Star Wars, but I love Star Trek. Books are great! Board games and mini games are great! Cosplay and D&D is great, together or separate!

Those are all just "normal" things to us, haha. ::):

These lists are going to get long...

Rocks and minerals. They're kinda my jam.

Buffy & Angel shows

CW DC shows and Supernatural

General fantasy or goofball shows (Todd and the Book of Pure Evil).

Had long phases of beadwork, jewelry making, gardening, and beekeeping.

Making craft cocktails - life is too short for bad booze.

Dabbled in patchwork quilting.

Computer games are ruled out until I defend my thesis - but I go out of my mind for fantasy computer games. @DocPiske is a witness to that. I am now very cautious about that as I will go too far into computer game land if allowed.

D&D and board games if I can coordinate it - that's difficult

Ahh.. .Geek?

Lessee. I play RPGs - multiple different rulesets and settings. That's a list in itself.

I'm a really terrible writer (well, maybe not that bad, but a professional I ain't).

Anything /else/ I do can easily be turned to geekery - from spinning to kite-flying to jewelry-making and art.

Rocks and Minerals (I inherited a small rock collection and I have a pet rock.)

Buffy & Angel shows (I watched those  )

General Fantasy  (Discworld, Middle-Earth, Narnia, Prydain, Zelazny...etal.)

Gardening (I attempted to leverage my natural brown thumbness by creating a rock garden...it was conquered by Bermuda Grass  <_< )

Booze/Beer (I have made an honest try at discovering what sort of beer I like...all wine tastes like grape juice spoilt with vinegar...I don’t think I have the palate to explore this further. Tequila =  :zombie: = IPA )

Computer Games (used to...but sorta gave up on those)

AD&D  (used to...but sorta gave up on those)

Terrain Building, Wargames, Warhammer (these three are all interrelated...)

Star Wars, Battlestar G, Star Trek, Babylon V (in no particular order...I am not a Trekker or a Trekkie...and I will not defend one of the other three as opposed to someone else’s favorite)

I got started writing through fanfiction? I was fifteen, it was the 90s

I grew up on Star Trek. As in we had the entire collection of The Original Series in the original release VHS tapes. These:

star-trek-vhs-4-americanlisted_37887787.

They were acquired 2-4 at a time as birthday gifts and anniversary gifts between my parents. They started collecting when they got married, they finished the collection when I was nine. This includes the replacements they had to buy because I watched a few of the episodes to fuzz. As a result I now write science fiction.

I've been my D&D/Pathfinder/Shadowrun/whatever RPG we're playing this week group's Forever-GM for... nine years now?

My degrees are in math and chemistry, my minor in astrophysics was prevented solely by a funding issue. My dad has traced our genealogy back to an era when the only records are ship manifests signed with 'X's. My mother's hand woven textiles have hung in a museum. Geek things run in the family.

The application of pigments within a liquid suspension applied to varied textured surfaces, with an applicator made of the caudal follicles of the male mustela sibirica .::P:

The newest thing I've gotten into is Warhammer 40k, and I've followed Magic: the Gathering a little bit as well. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, as well as Star Trek, D&D, Pathfinder, and sundry other things too numerous to mention at such a late time as right now.

  • I'm very interested in Military History and History in general.
  • Animals, I know a lot about our furry, scaly, slimey, walking, flying, swimming friends.
  • I love to cook and bake
  • Playing PC games, mostly Strategy and RPG, also citybuilders ( favorites Total War series, HOMM III, Civilization series, Emperor, Skyirm, Morrowind and AOW series)
  • Reading Comics ( I don't collect them, but I like reading them)
  • All things Vampire, I collect DVD's like Buffy, Angel, Interview with a Vampire, Blade, Underworld etc etc..( hides the Twilight Trilogy..that's from oldest vixen!)
  • Fantasy / Scifi/ Superhero movies have my attention as do shows like Rome, Black Sails, etc.
  • Heavy Metal fan, all sorts, from softer AOR to Death Metal, taking sidesteps to Psychobilly, Rock and Roll and good music in general ( I can appreciate ABBA or Bee Gees but RAP / Kanye West and such "music" can die a slow painful death).
  • I like to play board and card games like Catan, Monopoly, Risk etc..

EDIT: Because I forgot stuff

  • I like to read books...a lot of them.
  • I love to read about conspiracy theories, not because I believe them, but to see what people come up with. ( note: I said I don't believe them, so no need to report me citizen!)
  • I love to create stories and background for my minis.

Modern History, especially 19th. Century.

Modelling as an adjunct to miniature painting.

Wargaming, especially Frostgrave and Dragon Rampant. (But dabbling in many other rules systems)

Board-gaming, Settlers of Catan and Sherrif of Nottingham being particular favourites.

Reading and book collecting.

Occasional binge-watching of SF and fantasy films.

Mildly addicted to the online game "Forge of Empires", as it doesn't need constant attention.
