For myself, the perfect sandwich depends on the right bread for the right ingredients. If you stick deli meat and lettuce in a hotdog bun and say the sandwich is ready... I'd still eat it, but I would wish it was flat bread.

Still need to unhinge your jaw to eat that. =P

May 2: What makes the perfect sandwich?

Alternate fighting words: How far can a sandwich go before it's not a sandwich?

A perfect sandwich is one which is in ma belleh!

Any other way you want to define a sandwich will mean it's, by definition, not perfect.

Question from a friend: what is the purpose of having a slice of bread inside of a sandwich?

A third slice doubles the interior surfaces that can absorb certain ingredients, such as:

...juice from sweet pickle relish, red pepper relish, dill pickle relish, tomatoes, mustard, mayo, pickle slices...

Sandwiches that drip = annoying.

I know ... enough German to get into trouble, but I wouldn't say I speak it well.

Mostly, I lack vocab and grammar mastery.

Learning a third... I think I'd better learn the second first. ^^;

Used to know a bit of German, and had a year of Spanish when I attempted college, but I haven't kept up with them.

Not "know" but I've taken 3 semesters of French and 3 semesters of Latin. Tried Spanish three times in middle school and it never stuck.

Due to lack of use, I effectively only remember baby-talk French. I can sound out words pretty well. I only was able to start pronouncing words after getting sick and nasalizing everything - the nasalized vowels for the language stuck around when I got better!

College didn't take my French credits on a technicality, and only let me know after I lost proficiency so I couldn't test out. Restarted with Latin for fun. And yeah, Latin class is a lot of fun. You get to jump right into the gory vocabulary about swords 'n' stuff! Covered all of Latin grammar and translated some Caesar and Cicero. I enjoyed it a ton.

I've also lost proficiency there due to lack of use, but Latin would come back pretty swiftly if I sat down with my textbook. I'd really like to relearn French and brush up on the Latin.

To conclude, something I think I remember from Latin, useful when in the presence of unscrupulous priests.

Studied various languages over the years. The French and Spanish come back when I am  immersed in the countries speaking it.  The Russian and Japanese I only remember a few words of.  I would like to improve reading level of both.  I found Latin interesting, because etymology fascinates me.

I can read and speak russian. Don't consider myself fluent but I have enough to get by with daily things. Writing is tricky for me because my grammar and spelling aren't up to snuff really. I've considered studying spanish but my experience with russian shows that if you don't use it regularly you lose it quickly. I've got a couple of friends that speak about 6 languages but considering what I've heard of their english I don't know if I'd call them proficient in all of them either. Still impressive because I have enough trouble switching back and forth between 2.

I used to speak French rather fluently, but now since it's been so long I have to actively translate in my head as I go, so it's a lot harder to do.  Something about not really using it much since 1998 because my parents couldn't enroll me in French immersion anymore for some reason.  I have some French customers, but thankfully they're understanding about it all.

I can still swear in French (and Dutch, if one swear counts!) though...

I also used to sort of know Spanish, and that one has apparently stuck around for some reason in my head (I blame Hocico releasing half their music in Spanish, since they're a Mexican band after all), but we didn't really get to learn much of that in high school due to too many class clowns.

Surprisingly, I know a bit of Japanese too, and can pick out various words in conversation, but definitely can speak it.  This is definitely due to subbed anime.

I took 3 years of French aaaaand... lost most of it over time.

I learned to read Spanish through immersion, growing up/living in Los Angeles helped with that, and I've actually used it at work. I now have even more reasons to give in and learn to speak it properly.

I had to teach myself to read scientific German for my Chemistry degree. I had to replicate the results of these papers for this class and the only sources I could find were the original German. This was pre-Google Translate so I had few options. So I went with the most ridiculous option.

Zwei biere, bitte.

Dos cervesas, por favor.

Deux bieres, s'il vous plait.

Dva piva pozhaluysta.

I can speak fluent beer! A very useful accomplishment for anyone following a sea-going career.

Seriously, I'm a rotten linguist and would dearly love to be able to speak ANY second language to a good standard. I think being able to tell a joke in another language well enough to get a laugh must be a very satisfying experience.
