Cthulhu: Death May Die

Annd... decided to drop it.  Just not feeling this one.  Love some of the demon figure but with so many games already on my shelf (and my friends' shelves)  new games have got to be something special or really different to merit playtime and I'm not sure this one is.

Yeah I wasn't suggesting new rules, just alternates sculpts for say, the ten core survivors investigators.

 

"The Kid" seems to be a ripoff homage clone imitation of  sort of similar to Varvara from Hellboy comics. 

 

Elsewhere it has been suggested that this game's rules/gameplay also seem similar to Mantic's recent Hellboy project. 

 

These rules have also been described elsewhere as a mash-up of Zombicide and Elder Sign, which I also thought when I read the rules.  Just an opinion.

 

Really hard to figure out how many new ideas there really are here.  Sigh.

The Dagon sculpt is much more like a dragon sculpt that any Dagon I have seen before. I believe that the lore has him looking like a deformed and twisted giant sea lion. 

 

I am still watching for the entertainment value, but debating even a $1 pledge.

Well, it's all new to me.  DH and I haven't bought a new game in.... years. Mostly we gave up on new games because we could not convince our old group that they could be fun.  I think our new group would be interested in this one.  And if they're not, I'm getting ~65 figures for $100, which is about $1.53 each.  That's cheaper than Bones.

Yeah. I've been backing the CMON games for the figures and have played only one of the games (SMOG - which is very good). I'll probably stay in and go for the $100 pledge

I want to like this game a lot.  I will no doubt stay in because its solo play doesn't require you use more than two investigators (which is preferably to Zombicide's solo play).

 

I don't know anything about math, but I am going to go out on a limb and wonder if Big Cthulhu is actually what is holding this project back right now. 

 

If it is really that expensive to produce then it is not like their typical add-ons, which boost the money totals but don't cost them that much.  So those add-ons typically help unlock stretch goals.

 

Maybe this thing isn't going to be as profitable for them, so they are reticent to count it towards stretch goals. 

 

Currently (according to my mathing) the pledges for Big Cthulhu account for $724950.

 

If you subtract that from the total you get $1,061,483.   So maybe that's the de facto total for CMON right now.    And that accounts for the broader gaps between stretch goals in this project

 

Please feel free to disagree as I don't know numbers or crowdfunding.

I think they're just trying to control the pacing, and overestimated their momentum.  I know that's why they do short campaigns (to keep the pacing up).

 

CMON tend to have a lot of stretch goals figured out beforehand, but they tend to try and space the stretch goals for pacing rather than required funds (they don't want to run out of cool things before the last 48 hours).

However, it seems like they made some mistakes here.  With their other games, adding more heroes is super exciting, but the Cthulhu mythos have always had more interesting monsters than heroes, so no one was excited about those.  And Dagon has just taken up too many stretch goals for too many days of their campaign.

 

 

 

 

UPDATE:  Ok, now they've got an update that everyone was looking for.

 

6 new episodes- essentially doubling the number of scenarios for the game, and a bunch of cool new monsters to boot.

It seems CMON knows hot to turn things around,.  It took minutes to hit Dagon since that update.

 

 

The next stretch goals are for an upgraded dash board (or dash holder) and more monsters.  When I got up this morning, the day was 5k negative (I was surprised) but after that update, they jumped up about 50k.

Exact same. Only thing here that really interests me at this point is Hastur. And this is after the episode 2 stuff. The huge Cthulhu just looks, meh, doesn't matter how huge he is if the sculpt is super bland.

Game itself looks like The Others with a few tweaks, and imo seems like a real yawn,  just like The Others. At least there I got a bunch of really novel and cool minis for my $100.

For those who believe that Hastur will be boxed separately- it looks as though "boxes" are just a part of how this game is organized.

The game takes a note from legacy games (although it is not a legacy game).  Each Elder God and Scenario have their own boxes with the scenario rules, tokens, etc. and the CMON people consider the contents of those boxes to be spoilers.

 

So, the fact that there are Cthulhu and Hastur "boxes" doesn't mean that those are retail boxes.  At least, that's my reading on it.

Ah: I hadn't used their rules, I just really liked having alternate sculpts (especially for re-use in RPG's), and it seemed like an excellent option for miniature games in general. It's too bad that the associated rules in that case didn't live up to the potential, but I'd like to see more innovative uses for miniatures, like:

  1. Representing a condition (binary state) via an alternate sculpt
  2. Representing gear with snap-on or magnetic bits
  3. Representing resource attrition (hit-points, ammo, crew) on larger models with removable bits (or even movable bits... just something more aesthetic than click-bases)
  4. Representing combos (kinda like the Small-World races) via a snap-together method  (upper/lower? alternate bases? Chimeric creations?)

As long as it hits a certain minimum, which I suspect this project already passed, all the planned stretch goals will be included. If funding is faster than planned the stretch goals get further apart, if funding is slower the goals are closer together.

I haven't done a CMON KS in more than 5 years, but I have to admit, I am tempted. I actually like the investigators and some of the critters are cool, plus decent variety in cultists....

 

I havent done ANY of the various lovecraft KSs, and I enjoy the mythos, so maybe this is the one Ill jump in on. watching.

 

too bad Cthulhu doesnt get me excited though. not really digging him.

 

Edit: I Just watched as much of the gameplay video as I could stand and was....bored. Seems pretty fussy. Maybe I’ll still back for the minis.

Yeah, things have really picked up since yesterday and they've shortened the gaps between stretch goals tremendously.   So feels like playing catch up in a positive way, what with all the cool monsters that have just shown up.

 

And those two Yithians!  They put a big smile on my face.  No wonder they are making them KS exclusives.

      Found this on kickstarter, seems a very useful handle, the idea of the ring is super and  I find that the way it turn upside-down it's brilliant!

      Maybe the shipping for EU it's a bit too hight considering it ship from UK... but at least it is not overpriced. 

      I'm in for the early basic :)

       Morana, 75 mm Morana was once a champion of the sacred order of the Radiant Fist. During a mission, the dark wizard Shahrivar cast a curse over her and traped her soul in a gem. Since then his body has become the wizard´s tool, bringing death and disease wherever she goes.
       Akanksha, 75 mm Heiress to the throne of Shin Kingdom was always known for her diplomatic skills and her sword mastery. In one of her many diplomatic meetings, she received as a gift a pendant in the shape of a heart and, since then, there has been no desire which have refused or a lover that have rejected. It must be said that the tensions between the neighbouring kingdoms are more relaxed than ever.
         Najwa, 75 mm  At another time, Najwa was the high priestess in the Sharated Temple. The Great Tremorrevealed an ancient buried room in the depths of the temple that contained writings from a thousand years ago. She was the first to study them and learned dark and forbidden knowledge which poisoned her body and soul. The high wizard Lucianus tried to save her but it was too late, she destroyed the temple and was lost in the night.
      Here you can see a comparative image of the projected height for the miniatures in both versions. Has you can see, the 75 mm scale will offer an excellent miniature for your shelf and the 32 mm scale will fit in any boardgame and wargames that you can imagine.
          In adition, some parts have been changed from the 75 mm scale to the 32 mm scale to avoid too small details and give the best painting experience.

      It's time to print and release the newest volume of the GOLD BRICK SERIES, the GOLD DIGGER FREDeral Reserve which compiles a multitude of the Gold Digger  spin-offs and ancillary series.   If you supported the previous Gold Bricks, thank you very much, and we hope you support this campaign too. With a load of great standalone and continuity pickup stories, this collection makes a great jumping-on point for any new readers, as well as awesome reading for longtime fans. THESE ISSUES HAVE NEVER BEEN COLLECTED INTO ONE VOLUME BEFORE. Between its black-and-white and full-color issues, the main Gold Digger series is fast approaching the 300-issue mark and is going strong!  (Including material like that being compiled into the FREDeral Reserve, GD is already well past that milestone!)
      If you're not familiar with us, my name is Joeming Dunn, and I run Antarctic Press, a small, independent comic company started in 1984. I have personally collected comics of almost every type and genre since 1974, and I can say that during the past 30 years, we have published some of the greatest and best independent comics out there. Our publishing history includes titles like Gold Digger and Ninja High School. The comic industry has changed over the years, so we have started this Kickstarter program to help introduce new projects from our talented group of creators.
      Prominent among the many series we have published over the years is Fred Perry's ingenious title, Gold Digger, which Fred describes as a mixture of Indiana Jones and Final Fantasy. The idea for Gold Digger was first conceived during Fred's tour of duty in the first Gulf War, and it debuted in Antarctic Press's anthology comic, Mangazine, in 1991. A four-issue miniseries followed in 1992, and a regular monthly black-and-white series followed starting in 1993. The current color series began in 1999 and has continued since then. It is the second-longest-running solo-created title in the industry. Among comic books with female leads, its run is second only to Wonder Woman.  In 2013, Fred was honored at Comic Con International in San Diego, where he received an Inkpot Award for his work on Gold Digger.
      Over the past years, we have released other Gold Bricks as Kickstarter projects. This Gold Brick is outside the numbering system of the main-series Bricks, so no potentially confusing volume numbers this time! If you haven't seen or read Gold Digger, this is your chance to enjoy one of the best and longest-running ongoing series in comics. Like the other Bricks, this one lets new readers join in easily, so you don't have to be shy!
      Over the next few years, we'll go back to reprint the other volumes to match the new Kickstarter printings' format. We want everyone to have nice editions. In addition to reasons already mentioned, during previous campaigns, many backers have asked us to collect these series, since many of these issues are difficult to find. 
      So what is included in this Gold Brick?

      What are we going to do with the Kickstarter money?
      Plain and simple, we're going to print and ship the Gold Digger FREDeral Reserve Gold Brick.
      The FREDeral Reserve Gold Brick is over 600 pages, many of which are in full color. Printing the actual books is the biggest single expense. The first print run of a typical Gold Brick is quite costly, as most printers require a minimum run to make it cost-effective. We are thus using Kickstarter to assist us with those costs. If the amount seems high, you must remember that we are printing at least a thousand copies of a 600+ page book. Another cost is shipping: First we will have to ship the books from the printer to our offices, and once we get them, send copies to all our supporters and distributors. Several thousand pounds of books represents a significant shipping expense.
      Here is a breakdown of our expenses.
      Printing: $12,500 (which includes hard and softcover)
      Shipping: $3,000 (Sending a 600-page book is costly, especially overseas.  The cost for shipping just one copy overseas is now around $34.)
      Fees: $1500 (Kickstarter takes their fees off the top)
      Handling/Supplies: $1500 (We have to pay for boxes and pay people to pack those boxes.)
      That does not include cost for sending the large PDF files to all the supporters and other miscellaneous costs.
      Those basic expenses total $18,500.
      So what do you get?
      The brick is 6 x 9 inches and will contain AT LEAST the series we mentioned above.
