Goblin squad (pic heavy) - finished

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

As I recently finished an orc squad, I’m now focusing on a goblin one. I’d like to share my progress with you.

These will be used for tabletop gaming, in DnD campaigns I recently started DMing.

They’re all reaper minis. On these pictures I had just removed the mold lines, glued the separate parts and put the priming on :

- 03850: Armored Goblin Spearmen (2) (the smallest one)

- 03462: Goblin Warriors (4)

- 03777: Cave Goblin Archers (2)

- 03838: Sakarat, Goblin Wizard

There are a few other ones for which I didn’t take pictures at the beginning.

I didn’t want to make them green, so I was going for a yellowish orange for their skin... But as I was wandering through all the paints at my local GW, I stumbled on that “Squig Orange” and decided that was the one.

So now they’re almost red :

And here are the others that I didn’t think about photographing at the beginning :

- 2 copies of 07003: Dungeon Dwellers: Bloodbite Goblins (2)

- 14095: Neek, Reven Sergeant

These last two already got some spare paint from other minis painting.

An excellent choice!  Team Tangerine approves of this, which will net you a great batch of the very finest minions that low pay and poor gruel can buy.  We may not be very bright, or competent, or loyal, but we can take a heap of abuse and are easily replaced!

Thanks all!

I put some work on the base colors. To choose them, I thought about where these guys come from in my fantasy world.

They originate in a small mountain that is stuck between a desert and a peat cog.

So for the colors, I chose some tan for the desert animal fur (camels, fennec foxes, ibex goats). For the leather and wood, brown will do. They would have limited access to any dye, except eventually to peat from the cog, so that makes a dark grey color.

As they will be used for tabletop gaming, I also need an easy way to distinguish them.  So I

thought about giving them different hood colors. A trade route goes through the cog, so they can probably loot some colored fabric from time to time.

I haven’t put the brown on yet, but here’s my progress:

Same principle with these guys :

And not much work on that one either, as I didn’t do the metallic paint yet:

Some more work on these guys. Base coats are all done, I think I managed to make them all have a similar “flavor” with the orange, tan, grey and brown.

First, the cannon fodder (no pictures of the green one’s back as he’s got no pants on):

Then the approximate archers:

The ones that mean serious business:

The one that actually knows how to fight:

The annoying one who managed to learn a spell:

And the happy squad leader:

Now that the base colors are on, it’s time to give them some individual attention. I don’t know yet which one will be first. More to come. ^_^

You are kind of tempting me to get the guy with the two swords...

I really like him, very cool sculpt with a lot of personality.

The Goblin Lads are LOOKIN' GOOD. Just one little critique: shield are not made of metal. Only the boss & edges would be metal.

The shield itself is normally a non-splintering wood like alder, or linden...it gives you a chance for some color.

Well done indeed! Convenient color coding, and they look that proper mixture of wretched, desperate, hungry, and vicious you want in gobboes. Keep us posted!

Holidays are over so I’m back to work on these guys. Very little progress for now, I took Malefactus’ advice and gave the shields some color.

I’ll try to add some drawing on the right one’s shield.

Ah.  A freedom fighter.

Very noble!

Yah finding out he doesn't have pant while your painting is a bit of a surprise too.

Since I hadn't seen many other paint jobs go by I thought people might like to see my goblin in power armor.
And a blood nebula mercenary for scale.

Drums! Tribal drums from the heart of the deepest jungles. The Goblins wage war. They spider heards will consume everything on its past and, when there's nothing left, they will leave the trees behind to invade the lands of men. Their Chief, riding the giant eight legged spider steed Sleipnir, is ready to lead them to victory.

Here I wanted to try a particularly colorful palette to tap into the jungle theme. Maybe in that note it lacks a bit of green... first time I use this colored liquen. Maybe is too much?

I wanted to create something to enter in the Paint It Pink competition this year, but I only had about a day and a half before ReaperCon. I knew that this wasn't going to win any awards, but it was important to me that I do something. I saw these goblins with their oversized flag and just went for it. The base is one of Secret Weapon's doric columns.

Delving into the Bones 4 core set, we start by pulling out the 24 bonus goblins that originally were in the Bones 3 core set. And add to them the 12 that I have from the previous kickstarter for a grand total of 36 goblins, 6 each of 6 different sculpts. I actually think I should have a few more of these, as one of the ones I got in the Bones 3 shipment was missing a part, and Reaper sent me a whole pack as a replacement. I wonder where I have put the originals?

These are a bit thinner and more weedy sculpts than the Bones 1 and 2 goblins (Reaper makes a lot of Goblins, obviously they sell well), but as such they should fit well with my existing Lord of the Rings Moria Goblin army I am slowly growing for Kings of War.  I have based them on my 3D printed 20mm round bases, the Bones 3 ones have a slightly different style as I have since developed the design, making the later types more hollowed out so I can avoid the minis always standing on a hilltop.

36 goblins are quite a handful to deal with all at once. Being nickled and dimed to death, or experiencing death by a thousand cuts as it were, is still dead.

Goblin Luggits are the ones with two handed weapons in Kings of War Vanguard

Goblin Spitters are the bowmen in Kings of War Vanguard

The rest are just Rabble (in Kings of War Vanguard)

I generally do not like painting identical minis identically, so I switch things up slightly by painting each set of different sculpts in a different base colour, and randomly do the other bits. I keep some bits the same throughout, such as the weapons, shields, or helmets, and also have used the same strong quickshade ink and a very light drybrush with Team Yankee Maverick Khaki, a mid-to-light beige-ish green on all the minis.
This together with the bases give the entire group a cohesive feel, so they appear as a unit while still retaining a sense of individuality,
These are really quite quick to paint, just alot of them to do. I did them in between bouts of playing Payday 2 over the last couple of days.

I haven't posted for a bit but I have been painting. I have been painting mostly for D&D but some just because they are fun models. Luckily, the two cross over quite a bit so I get to paint fun models for D&D!

I painted up these little goblins. I have the other 6 waiting to be painted. For these, I decided little greenskins. They are so cute!
