If it makes you feel better, I get self-conscious about teaching a lot of my classes too!  I feel like there are so many better painters out there (even in areas of painting that many consider to be my strengths), and so it can be hard to feel like I'm bringing appropriate value for the money.  NMM?  I have sort of an old-school style that is not as realistic as many of the modern Euro painters.  Blending?  Rhonda is even better at it, and I learned from her, so doesn't that make her class better than mine?  Similar thoughts abound for any other class topic.

 

At the end of the day, though, I remind myself that technical skill does not always equate with teaching talent!  In this setting, being a great teacher is even more important than being a great painter.  I have every confidence you have and will continue to do a great job with your students, and I hope to do so as well, so we can rest assured that our students will feel that their class ticket purchases were worth it!  Plus, the money is not really about us so much as it is about defraying the convention/supply costs for Reaper.

As long as you all give some options for a 9 year old who loves the hobby.  Last year was great because we had a few choices that she could possibly do on Sat.  This year I will do the same and try to find something we can both take and contact the instructor to verify she can sign up too.

I had a kid in one of my Introduction to Metallic Paints classes last year, around 10-11ish (I'm not great with ages), and his dad. Most of my material is very beginner-friendly! The discussion on using layers for highlighting/shading could potentially be slightly beyond her (I don't recall what her skill level is), but if you're there to help her out, I'd be happy to have you both.

 

I'm teaching my 'Fun with Shiny Paint!' class 3 times this year (assuming they are all accepted); Thursday and Saturday at 7pm, and Friday at 5pm. If that's too late for her, I'd be more than happy to set up a mini-class for her earlier in the day at a table in the common area.

To be fair, not everyone is looking for realism. I for one prefer the outlandish fantasy "comic book" style over more "historically accurate". Not to say that I don't appreciate the talent that goes into that style, but I enjoy the vibrant colors of modern comics over more realistic classical pieces.

 

I also would like to take a moment to motivate and encourage all those who are teaching: some people are taking your classes not because they only appreciate your technical talent with a brush, but also due to your personality, presentation and reputation.

She has her own "blending" technique...even when I try to help her with what I have learned.  The thing that I have found out is she does better when a real teacher is showing her how to do something and it is not dad telling her.  She loves Tish's class but also really got a kick out of Bob's horror basing class and Andy's sculpting nature class.

Im hoping growtix is better this year and we are able to snag some classes even if it's beginner ones.

 

We just ordered our tickets and are excited! Does anyone know if there's a booth or company at the con that sells Windsor and newton series 7 brushes?

IIRC, Hangar 18 usually carries da Vinci brushes, which I consider the equal of the W&Ns*. I don't recall seeing W&N S7 brushes, but I wasn't really looking so it's certainly possible.

 

* Raphael, da Vinci, and W&N Kolinsky sable brushes are usually thought to be very comparable -- that's certainly been my experience. Some people include Rosemary and Co. brushes in that grouping, but I haven't tried them to be able to say. But each brush company's premiere line does have a slightly different feel (more or less snap, bigger or smaller belly for a given length of hairs, whatever).

Thank you I asked for those cause it was the only ones I knew of so anything comparable is just fine thank you!

Might be worth mentioning then that Dick Blick carries:

• W&N Series 7 (Used and liked)
• W&N Series 7 Miniature (shorter hairs -- I don't like this line as much as the regular Series 7, but other painters prefer them)
• da Vinci Series 10 (Used and liked)
• da Vinci Series 11 (Haven't used, but I'll probably buy one the next time that I order from Blick)
• da Vinci Series 35 (same)
• Raphael Series 8404 (Used and liked)
• Raphael Series 8408 (Used but prefer the 8404 -- style difference not quality difference)

Jerry's Artarama carries the W&N Series 7 and Raphael Series 8404, but I can't find the others on their website.

 

You can often get a better price by ordering direct (though think about shipping costs) than buying locally, but you don't get to examine the brush in advance that way. That said, I've had very good experiences with Dick Blick customer service and have heard the same from others. I haven't ordered from Jerry's, but haven't heard anything that would cause me not to order from them. I'm sure there are other sources as well.

I am glad Kuro said that and I can certainly relate to that feeling.  Last year I was fortunate enough to be teaching in the classroom next to Kuro and was learning from him while I was teaching.  I am very happy to be a silver medalist and as such I am probably the least best painter on the artist row.  But I get over the nerves of teaching along side of many of the greatest painters in the business (Im a huge Kuro fan btw) by telling myself...

1. I am basically ok at a wide range of topics.

2. I really enjoy teaching and feel I have a gift in communicating concepts (teaching is an art in itself)

3. I can relate to the things that some students may struggle with and can help them see things from the view point of how can a non-pro do this task.  (I practice my classes as if Im a student many times before the con)

4. I share the passion for Reaper Minis with most of my students and we generally have a great time and learn together. so more of a fellowship of enthusiastic painters in a way.

5.  I take great honor in the fact that Reaper has trusted me with a small part of my favorite event of the year, and as such I plan to exceed their expectations.  No room for nerves.

It turns out that the money I set aside to go to ReaperCon this year is instead needed to pay for dental work.  So I'm not going.  I am... disappointed.

This week was model prep for 1 of my 4 (projected) RC19 entries.  Am starting with the diorama.  Am moving slowly, but took advantages of cure times and got a head start on this project while other subassemblies cure (tabletop project).  This evening I pinned and filled one of the minis, could be in primer tomorrow. 

 

The box of scenery and mud arrived this week, and I might stop by Lowe's tomorrow for a chunk of hardwood (base) and raid the attic for some blue foam for the terrain.
