Observation on "Sophie Says"

I participated in 2 of these, and had a great time in both.

There were frustrations however in that the available color pallete was not just unusual but limited.

For example, we had no white or yellow colors available at our table.  It makes it difficult to even mix to get close to a desired color when there isn't a color or color substitute available on the table.

Would it be possible to see that each table starts with a color palette that includes at least a red, a blue, a yellow, a black, and a white at the start of each session?  Greens and browns are easy to mix, as are purples.  With whites and blacks a color can be either lightened or darkened as necessary.

@Green Eyed Monster, I'm so glad you felt included.

The serious answer to the lack of supplies for the Sophie Says, I hope to have a good plan in place to let at least one Sophie Says per day expand to include as may people as want to play.

That being said, SS has alway been about unexpected difficulties so I feel the lack of certain colors, or pallet (Just ask Dilvish)

My husband and I participated in the Quick Conversion and had a lot of fun doing it. Our classes schedule didn't allow us to participate in any of the others. I think we will spread things out a bit more next year, so that we have time for the rest of the things we wanted to do.

The only criticism we had for the Quick Conversion was that the glue we used wasn't working well. I literally held my mini together for more than 10 minutes (and yes, I just used a small amount) to get it to hold. It wasn't until the last few minutes that someone mentioned the accelerator was on the other table.

I do want to say, we appreciate all the work that was put into the hijinks. It was obvious that it was a lot of effort. Well done, Ludo and to everyone that helped out.

I first want to thank @Ludo & @OneBoot for organizing the Hobby Hijinks tables.  Some of the best time my girl and I had at the Con. I believe she did every paint by dice roll she could.

I would second, or even third,  the idea of a small time window between events to allow for painters to assist in minor cleanup, get supplies for next event, and give y'all's voices a quick break.

I hope I can get y'all's blessings to possibly borrow some of these hijinks events to run at the local painting events around here.  Doing a Paint by dice roll, or a Sophie Says would break the typical silence we all seem to paint in.  I learned from the hijinks that there can be so much more fun to be had than just finishing a model.

Asking participants to police the table during judging would be a good start.  I saw a lot of folks leave dirty plates and towels and just walk away from the event.  We're asked to do the same after the classes, and it's just plain good manners to pick up your trash when you leave.  In those last few minutes when you tell people to finish up, and you have their attention, remind folks to tidy up before they go.

Good point, Inarah - although it brings up something I noticed in the classes, too.

most of us will help set things back up, but sometimes not knowing what the setup for the next event/class is supposed to look like means some people don't even try, or the event coordinator/instructor is overwhelmed right at the finish by people asking them.    It might be helpful to have a few 8x10 color photographs/drawings of what each "station" should look like.  That way the coordinator could hold up the picture and say "When we're done, please reset your station to look like this"

It may seem like overkill, but it's a simple way to set expectations and give people direction.

Hello! Finally got my registration for forums! Yay!

First of all,  Reapercon was a blast!!

The hobby hijinks were a great way to interact with others and have fun while doing so!

I participated in all but faction fun and quick conversation and speed paint (the last super long one).

The biggest thing is giving time to reset between activitues and for Ludo, OneBoot to have time to rest as well.

Maybe one less activity per day in order to allow time in between?  This I think would help give more time to clear and set up.  Also more volunteers to help clean up/ set up for next event.

I agree with the placing of tables in a way so they are separated from the open painting,  yet spaced out. I know room might be an issue and such,  so we will have to see when the time comes.

I cannot wait for next year! Great job all!

I participated in several of these - and as someone new to the hobby, it was fun to try some things that were kind of different.

As a newbie, the paint by die roll wasn't as much fun for me as I'm not skilled in taking weird colors and making them work (however it was really cool to see people making it work).

The conversion speed paint was a lot of fun and I'm proud of the mini I put together, but I'll echo the comment that more arms/heads/wings would help lower the difficulty level a bit to make this a bit more newbie friendly.

I'd have loved to see some casual mentors (not full blown class, but quick tips or suggestions for the new folks).

All in all, good times, though!

@Echoside_ feel free to steal away!

Plan on having more defined reset time. Some people were better about cleaning up after themselves than others....

I actually had an hour and a half for lunch and an hour for dinner. It seemed like things kept creeping into that time though...

@Pegazus and @CitizenCane filled in so I was able to take @Kuro Cleanbrush's NMM boot camp (which was amazing!)

I think the Sophie Says proved that we need to have some more color theory classes...

As far as helping with the difficult colors, I still struggle with them as well. I guess I'll have to work on that :)

--- edit ---

We need to get you drinks and food next time. Bathroom breaks.... you're on your own.=P

I tried my best to keep him fed and hydrated.... well some of the drinks I brought him wouldn't hydrate him, but I didn't hear any complaints ;)

I had the privilege of sharing my thoughts on the Drive home, but Just want to say thanks to @Ludo again for making the Hobby Hijinks Corner one of the best parts of the Con!

Read through the entire thread and have additional input on the table spacing discussion.

As part of the "speed racer" set {I need a walker for extended periods of time that require walking about} it was very difficult to get to any table not located directly on the main aisles.

I would suggest that in addition to the main aisles [think main highways] that there be additional spacing between every third table [residential street] so that an overhead plot plan would show tables in "blocks" where the table in the middle had the closest spacing with the tables on either side having at least one more easily accessible side.  This would make everything more accessible for those of us with even small mobility issues and not significantly reduce the number of tables as there was plenty of room on the "margins", particularly the stage side of the ballroom to add an additional 6 inches to a foot of aisle-way.

The staff may have set up the room for their regular "Banquet" spacing, with just enough room for the staff to circulate and the max number of tables.  Since I never saw all the tables full at any one time the reduction of a few tables would not be a burden, at least for the foreseeable future given the rate of growth for this event.

The one area I can see that will need some careful planning with expanding popularity is the Vendor Area, which looked pretty full,  always a good sign.
