Getting to Know Each Other, October 2018

Oct 25: How plan/schedule oriented are you?

Not as much as I used to be. There was a time when each plan was a lovingly constructed thing of timetables and contingancy plans, a heist level of planning applied to pretty much any event. Unfortunately these never survived any contact whatsoever with the people around me, and the ones that didn't involve anyone else got completely derailed by things I'd made no contingancies for. It got to the point it seemed as if the very act of planning doomed the plot to failure as the gods took it as a personal challenge to derail it.

So now I plan very little and keep other people as far from said plans as is possible, because what is often labelled as "spontaineity" by those around me is what I consider unreliability. (If the plan is to meet at 3pm, then be there at 3pm, not 4pm or 4:45pm, 3pm! I don't care is you saw a squirrel or shiny object, the table we reserved is now gone and I don't want to hear about how I "ruined your evening" by not getting a table when we would have had one if you'd ever heard of a thing called punctuality!)

As to scheduling all I ask is that my work hours not be flopped about like a landed fish every other week. Unfortunately this is too much to ask in today's world where no one seems to understand that constant sleep deprivation and life upheaval do not make for a "positive" employee. (and our society's obsession with ramming "positivity" down everyone's throat is fuel for a rant all it's own.)

I have a weekly routine if that counts.

But rarely does anything happen in my life that is important/interesting enough to require a plan.

I start with a plan, most of the time. The plan helps educate my next move when chaos inevitably hits.

On good days?  Very plan and schedule oriented.  Things run smoothly when I have cleared all the sticky notes on my desk, have all upcoming appointments in my calendar so I can access it from work and home and have days of assignments ready for my student workers.  Also, there are no dishes or clothes to wash at home.

On bad days?  What plan?  We're hanging on to the seat straps and trying to keep enough details until the ride comes to a stop (which happens from time to time in IT).

Sadly, I married into a schedule wrecking family.  Nothing can throw a curve ball into my semi-ordered life more than a change of plans due to in-laws.  Sometimes it is spontaneous, sometimes it is something they've known about.  They just "forget" to tell me, even though I'm integral to what they were going to do.  Usually moving something or fetch questing or technology related.  Even a few hours notice is helpful as I can rearrange what I have to do.  No one seems to understand the importance of being able to rearrange scheduled blocks.  If you give me the time to replan, I'm fine.  If you pressure me for an immediate answer, I'm much less so.  My wife, her sisters, her mother, her grandmother all share this in common.  Over the last 22 years, i've gotten better at handling how I respond to them (and by association, other people that do the same thing).  I've also learned that my tendency to get somewhere 15 minutes early and her (their) tendency to get somewhere 15 minutes late can have one side or the other happy, or we're all unhappy but get somewhere exactly on time.

I absolutely LOVE creating schedules, plans, spreadsheets, organization. Goodness. I love it.

Following through? ... Not so much. ::P:

I have a schedule for work in the sense that they use SAP and SAP has a time set in stone that I must arrive by or there will be CONSEQUENCES.  Not working in production though, I think the consequences are having to talk to someone important if I make a habit of it.  Like a few dozen times habit of it.  Beyond that I show up, see what I need to do, and get to work.

At home, 1/10.  I would have said 0/10 but I do make plans like "I should buy groceries tomorrow" so it must be non-zero. Other than that, I do what I want when I feel like doing it.

I abhor late people. If we're supposed to meet at X time and you're gonna be late, let me know. If you don't, you better be in the hospital or something else dire. Like, being chased around the woods by a serial killer or something.

Indeed!

I know a few people who tend to be late, therefore when planning to meet them, I ask them to meet me at X.

X being 15 to 30  minutes earlier than the actual meeting.

Extremely

But the downside is I can procrastinate endlessly if the plan hasn’t “come together” or isn’t sorted out.

If I can see all the steps in my head, and have all the parts gathered, I’m golden.

This.  Nothing makes me want to disassociate with people faster than this.  It shows a complete lack of caring about people other than themselves and a disregard for the time of others.

Oct 26-28 Weekend Quest

When was the last time you met someone new?  Did you like them, why or why not?
Introduce yourself/talk to someone you don't know this weekend and tell us about it?

Last night, the pizza delivery person.  But we didn't talk outside of the exchange of pizza so I don't think this counts.

Beyond that... ReaperCon this year.  Excluding the many people I previously had interacted with on the forums, I met people who I hadn't interacted with before, some of whom joined (or became more active on) the forums since.  Everyone I met at ReaperCon was great.  I don't know at what point people can become friends but I'd like to think I made a few this year.

(I'm not certain I ever introduced myself to @TaleSpinner or @Doug Sundseth.  I should fix that next time.)

Today, New Sergeant Major.

So far so good, need to get to know him better before I can pass a verdict.

No.

Too busy with family to meet strangers.

Grandma is having her 80th birthday.
