Tough question because I want to throw in tidbits from all over the place. If I ever do up a solid draft of my fantasy world it would have elements from almost everywhere and every time all squished into a large continent. If I had to pick a couple for reading I'd go with Norse or ancient Greek neither of which I have armies for. My wife is lactose intolerant and neither of us eat pasta for health reasons; therefore, it is something I have never had the desire to make. Just over a pound of shredded cheese (usually the cheddar / pizza mozza mix) melted into whole milk, with a small amount of butter (and salt) added in... Obviously elbow macaroni.... Poured all into a 9x13? glass pan.... Panko bread crumbs on top, that have been mixed with paprika, basil, oregano, and whatever other dry herbs I feel like adding in. I grew up steeped in the modern culture of fantasy literature and art, specifically, as written and depicted in the last 60 years or so, which influences my eye very strongly. The result is that I am drawn to modern derivations of European mythology most strongly, followed by Japanese cultural imagery, then Chinese. I also have some connection to South Asian mythology and imagery, which influences me a little bit, but is probably a distant fourth on the list. As other people have mentioned above this, there are lots of other beautiful, and unique visual styles, and cultural elements from other traditions around the world, but if I don't make a very strong effort to include them in my painting/reading/play style, they tend to get ignored. (ETA: Scanning up thread, I am reminded that modern fantasy art also includes some ancient Middle Eastern / Near-Eastern influences from Egypt and Mesopotamia, so I suppose I should include them too. At this stage, they have been pretty heavily filtered through the western fantasy gaming aesthetic.) I acknowledge that I have a foundation in and am biased towards Western fantasy, which is itself based on an amalgam of Western culture (although mostly British, I'm sure). That said, two of my favorite RPGs, Exalted and Legend of the Five Rings, are not based on Western culture (Exalted specifically tried to avoid many Western fantasy tropes and L5R is a pseudo-Japanese setting, although probably shaped by Western sensibilities). I am fascinated by mythologies and cultures as they were but I don't know any of them well enough to imitate or steal from. I am more likely to be familiar with RP settings based on them than with the actual myths themselves. What influences what I paint? Whimsy really. Does this mini look useful and/or fun to paint? What colors? Oh, these look good, let's use those! Who cares if purple was a rare dye in medieval Europe? It's a fantasy mini after all! Currently, this would be Ancient Greece. I would like to think it was because I was influence by some writing or interest in the history or the starting point for democracy. But, alas, that would all be false. I'm having a lot of fun playing Assassin's Creed: Odyssey and it has made me look into the look and feel of Greece. I have even been looking at gladiator type figures. Probably going to try and at least paint Alexios and Kassandra, but it may extend further. I rediscovered Arena Rex and another of my D&D players that also plays Odyssey is interested in playing it. I'm sure we'll have at least one Reaper Mundus. Too bad there aren't any Reaper dice (d6) that we could use for that specific faction. The Oneida Nation is my favorite as an adult, though I identify with the Nordic tribes, personally. Check out Robert Griffing's work, it's stunning and inspires me greatly. I like dwarves, so......Scottish? I like several different cultures because they give me lots of things to draw upon for characters; a recent favourite was taking from some Native American culture to create my Shoanti Stormborn sorcerer, Raging Thunder.
