My only painting today were some iguana eyes, but that's okay!

I've also been doing better about learning color than I thought. Those are colors I might be using for the iguana head. Only two of those are green!

I meant to do a step by step of the eyes but I was on the phone with my love and forgot. Oh well. There are 8 other eyes I can show! :)

Nothing crazy today. Our internet connection was down for most of the day, so without references I just glazed (washed?) on some flat color to see how everything will be.

I also realized that the rotating plate from the microwave is super handy.  I hope my husband doesn't need to microwave anything for a while!

I actually wanted to work on Ma'al some more but my brain cant' figure out this one part of his base. Once I do, it'll be super fun. Just... can't figure out that part. Maybe tomorrow.

Of course. Just ignore it for a few days and then realize you overthought it!

I couldn't figure out how to make the two pieces of Ma'al's base look cohesive, even though I'm positioning them differently than intended.

Just put both pieces on a bigger base....

Like literally every other mini.... :upside:

Yesss! Time for more fun ideas!

I wanted him to have a unique edging, following closely to the outline of the ruins, but that would be fairly difficult since I don't have any tools for that.

Maybe he'll go on a cool kid's wooden base like the ones from craft stores instead...?

He's going to be in a rainforest so only the edges of the base will be visible.

If I can't have magic edges, I want bark edges!

But I'd survive with this.

Have you watched any of the diorama construction videos on the Paepercuts YouTube channel?   He does some really cool, very realistic work that might help with the basing that you've sketched.

One of my favorites is the velociraptor/jungle diorama.

I'll check him out, thank you! I skipped to a random spot on his rainforest tree video and was pleased to see him using rope, tissue, and glue. That was a common combination used for natural textures in low budget cosplay and I was going to try it at this smaller scale. I'm happy to see it work!

Wire was common to use in cosplay so you could make stuff bend on their own, so I'll probably use that instead of rope for vines. His videos look super promising to learn from. :D

I just clicked to a random spot in another video and he was using whole peppercorns for coconuts. I LOVE IT.

EDIT: Those mangrove bases!!! I'm in love!!

I don't remember seeing anyone use a natural texture edge for a base. Is it just too much? Should simple edges be better? Or go all out, haha....

I don't know what I'm doing with little pieces I've torn off of fake plants but it sure is fun. :D

I need to write down what I'm seeing in those videos or I won't remember.

I still wanted magic edges for a minimal base but since that won't work out, I'm doing that wood edge base instead.

I wish I could make the connecting putty not so.... straight? I might try carving at it some more.

What about using small stones scattered near the base to break it up?

I will be adding rocks of various sizes to form a natural pool on one end. That's why I'm not happy with how straight that middle section looks, haha. The random green blob was my attempt at copying the ruins so I can extend some crumbly bits out if I need to.

Your lizard pics at the start gave me the idea on how to paint a Temple Dragon, so I went looking and found this for my inspiration. Thanks!  3nqtN3o.jpg

Awesome, I'm so glad! Nature is full of beautiful, amazing, and terrifying things. Perfect for inspiration!
