50304: Rowena Von Graaf, a Steampunk Adventurer

Recommended Posts

Apparently I never started a WIP thread for this miniature. This is Reaper's 50304: Rowena Von Graaf, sculpted by Julie Guthrie, which I started painting a long time ago. She's a fun steampunk figure.

All paints used are Golden Matte Fluid Acrylics. Color mixes are (usually) noted, but not exact ratios.

Questions are welcomed and I will try to answer them. Critiques are appreciated.

This is the way I usually start miniature figures: Lightly primed with Titanium White, then when that is dry, washing it over with Burnt Umber. Burnt Umber is a dark, transparent pigment that settles into crannies when thinned down and shows the details very well. It also gives a nice warm undertone to later paint layers.

I decided to paint her with a pretty black face.

Here's a close-up of her face. There are tiny white points which are microscopic unpainted pits in the figure. They are much smaller irl than they show up in the photographs. I am slowly (maddeningly) working to fill them in as I go.

I decided to paint her underskirt pink. This is Quinacridone Magenta lightened with Titanium White.

And the base coat on her dress and spats is straight Red Oxide.

And this is where I left her (cough) about a year and a half ago. More to come!

I laid in some bright lilac purple mixed from Quinacridone Magent, Phthalo Green, and Titanium white onto her corset and skirt ruffles. I also put a heavier pink mixed from Red Oxide and Titanium White on her skirt and a some rather harsh shadows visible on the skirt in Burnt Umber, trying to color in some little white specks of primer deep in the crannies.

And a simple linen white mixed from Titanium White and Yellow Ochre on her blouse.

I mixed up some transparent reds and violets from Quinacridone Magenta, Red Oxide, and Ultramarine Blue and washed them over various parts of her dress.

17 minutes ago, Corsair said:

What is the lady holding in her right hand?

It appears to be some sort of a cross between a gas mask and a Carnevale mask, with a Commedia dell’Arte style nose and goggles. If I’ve sussed it out correctly.

I added gold metallic paint (standing in for both gold and brass) on various parts: her goggles, her buttons, the mask, her pocket watch ...

Then copper:

... which I promptly loaded with way too much verdigris (Phthalo Green + Titanium White). Oh, well. If it can be painted, it can be fixed.

I did some subtle touch-ups on the copper on her gun and some subtle blue-grey shadows mixed from Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna on her dress.

I mixed up a bright blue from Phthalo Blue and Titanium White and painted buttons and trim on her corset; a soft violet from Ultramarine Blue and Quinacridone Magenta and Titanium White to add color and highlights to her skirt ruffles; and a gentle blue grey from Ultramarine BLue, Burnt Sienna, and much Titanium white to soften the shadows on her white blouse.

I mixed a bright, transparent blue from Ultramarine Blue and a little Phthalo Green and colored the ribbons on her hat and also shaded the mauve ruffles on her skirt, a little. Then I lightened it with white and painted highlights on the ribbons.

I painted little lenses in her goggles, a lime green mixed from Phthalo Green and Hansa Yellow Opaque for the ones on her hat and straight Red Oxide for the ones in her gas mask.

Then I noodled around with highlights and shading and reflected glints on the goggles mostly with Hansa Yellow Opaque and of course Titanium White, and I painted some reflections etc. on her pocket watch.

There are some beautifully painted versions of her in the Reaper store with super detailed tiny hands and everything on the pocket watch. I painted her like this and thought Ehh, I've seen reflections on glass watch faces like that before ...

Oh wait, she's done. Well, hey!

Here's a close-up of the gas mask:

Presenting the Artful Dodger, part of the Dickensian faction from the game Twisted by Demented Games.

Not too happy with this one, he turned out to be surprisingly difficult to paint (and even harder to photograph!), but at least he's finally done (I partially painted up his resin version a few years ago).

As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.

Presenting 'Pop' Bodkin (From the game Wolsung by Micro Art Studio) father of Hazel Bodkin, he works in the same automaton factory as a maintenance engineer. Like many older, country born Halflings he hasn't got into the habit of wearing shoes, despite the near-constant danger of something heavy falling on his toes.

Turned out to be a surprisingly characterful mini, so I had a lot of fun painting him. Still need to work on my stamped bases.

Presenting Hazel Bodkin (She's from the game Wolsung by Micro Arts Studio), walking home from her shift at the new-fangled automaton factory, she always makes sure to carry her slingshot, just in case she runs into one of those ruffians who make a sport of tormenting the wee folk.

Made a bit of a mess painting her boobs (it was harder to get a brush in there than I thought it would be) and I'm still not great at using my basing stamps, but overall I'm pleased with the result.

I was cleaning up behind my barn and found this half-buried in the dirt.  Was just on the way to throwing it out when I just couldn't.  So I washed most of the dirt off, and cut a base from scrap plywood I had, and away I go!  I actually have a semi-solid plan.  I want to knock this one out fast, first of all, so maybe it'll get done this year (ideally before spring or even March, but I know how things go).  I want it to evoke a few things without quite indicating any of them.  The Tyrell building from Blade Runner is a big one.  The magitek factory from Final Fantasy VI is another.  But I also want to maintain that primitive temple look--like a Mayan or Aztek pyramid--which the shape itself lends to.  I also want it to appear as though it's either been abandoned or nearly so, and nature has started to retake it.  So lots of pipes and vines and gears (see my initial bits pile) and maybe a surprise if I can keep motivated...  Let me know what you think!

Ha, also noticed my little Narshe cottage in the background--it's nearly complete as far as building.  That'll be for another topic though!
