aku-chan
I've been trying to wean myself of doing WIP threads, but I've missed them So I present Mara Frostraven, evil knight (from Reaper) and The Hookah, a nameless Guardian of Set (from Twisted):- I made a bit of a mess with these two before, so at this point they've been assembled, based, primed, slightly painted, stripped, scrubbed and re-primed (and in Maras case re-assembled, her arms fell off in the paint stripper). Working on Maras armour first (since it involves drybrushing). On my first attempt, I did my usual Oily Steel scheme then tried to tint it blue with a thinned coat of Blue Ink, looked good to start but dried very unevenly. So on this new attempt, I started with a basecoat of 1:1 Night Blue/Oily Steel, then a layer of 1:1 Oily Steel/Blue Ink, then some Black Wash, then drybrushes of 1:1 Oily Steel/Blue Ink and pure Oily Steel. With Hookah, I messed up his face on my first attempt and it's so finely detailed I didn't want to risk painting over it. With this second attempt, I kept things very simple. The skin is Dwarf Flesh > Flesh Wash > Dwarf Flesh > 1:1 Dwarf Flesh/Light Flesh, with dots of Leather Brown for eyes and a tiny Stone Grey moustache (I think I'm going to have to do a bit more to this to make it stand out).
SisterMaryNapalm
I am already looking forward to seeing what you will do with it
aku-chan
Thanks. I've actually been looking forward to painting Hookah for quite some time (it was him and Huntress that sold me on Twisteds Egyptian faction). Progress:- Finished off her armour with decorations in Leather Brown>Bronze>Brown Wash>Bronze, and used the same scheme on her Shield of the Succubus (it generates a permanent 'Charm Person' spell effect around the bearer. I have no idea if that would make a decent magic item or not) Used the Bronze scheme on his official cultist party hat and steampunk wrist doohickey, both then got Magic Blue>1:1 Magic Blue/Off-white decorations. He also got a darker 1:1 Stone Grey/Pure Black moustache, a 2:1 Red Orange/Scarlett Red > Red Orange (with some Brown Wash in the deepest folds) headscarf and an Oily Steel mouthpiece and valve.

Pillpeddler
I'm in awe of the confidence in brush control you have to take small sections to such a finish level individually. I always twitch, jerk or sneeze and mess up the most hard to reach areas. Good paintin'
aku-chan
Thanks! I actually paint the way I do because I have shaky hands, I varnish each bit as I finish it, so (in theory) it's easier to clean up any mistakes. Progress:- Mara got a face (Flat Flesh > Flesh Wash > Flat Flesh > 1:1 Flat Flesh/Light Flesh) with Old West Rose lips and Brown Wash dot eyes. And then she got hair (Wolf Grey > Grey Wash > 1:1 Wolf Grey/Off-white > 1:2 Wolf Grey/Off-white). Hookah got arm wraps (1:1 Ochre Yellow/Bonewhite > Brown Wash > 1:1 Ochre Yellow/Bonewhite > 1:2 Ochre Yellow/Bonewhite) and a big sword (1:1 Leather Brown/Bonewhite > Brown Wash > 1:1 Leather Brown/Bonewhite handle (plus the straps on his wrist doohickey), Bronze decoration and Oily Steel blade).
Rigel
Love that hookah fellow! And I like the varnish-as-you-go technique...will have to try it out.
aku-chan
Thanks! Progress:- Hmm... The painting on that jacket looked a lot neater last night Anyways, started his jacket with the shade layer (1:3 Andrea Blue/Night Blue), then did a layer of pure Andrea Blue, then a highlight layer of 1:2 Andrea Blue/Off-white and finally some Black Wash in the deepest folds. I think I might go back over it with a glaze, try and tidy it up a bit. No update on Mara, headaches got in the way of hobbying today.
aku-chan
Progress:- Mara got two kinds of leather straps (Leather Brown > Brown Wash > 1:1 Leather Brown/Bonewhite and the same but with an added drop of Scarlett Red), a blade for her +3 Ice Sword (Sky Blue > 1:2 Sky Blue/Off-white > Off-white), a scabbard (1:1 Leather Brown/Scarlett Red with Bronze trim) and a Book of Evil (Parasite Brown with Polished Gold trim and a Brassy Brass clasp). Basecoated her scaly skirt in Magic Blue with a Black Wash and her butt cape in Hexed Lichen (needs a couple more coats). I was going to work on Hookahs jacket a bit more, but it does look rather good in hand, so instead I painted up his canopic jars. They both have a body of 1:1 Cork Brown/Bonewhite with a Brown Wash and then highlights of 1:1 Cork Brown/Bonewhite and pure Bonewhite, and a lid of 1:3 Pure Black/Stone Grey with a highlight of Stone Grey with 3 brushtipfuls of the previous mixture and a Black Wash. The front jar has Bronze connectors, the back jar has a Polished Gold symbol and Brassy Brass connectors plus Oily Steel pipes. I then did the tubes in Vermilion.
aku-chan
Progress:- Finished off Maras scaly skirt with highlights of Magic Blue and 1:1 Magic Blue/Off-white. Got a solid basecoat of Hexed Lichen on her butt cape, before shading it with 2:1 Hexed Lichen/Pure Black and highlighting with 2:1 Hexed Lichen/Off-white and 1:1 Hexed Lichen/Off-white, it then got a Hexed Lichen glaze. Hopefully I'll get her base painted tomorrow and she'll be done. Hookah got his hookah painted (Oily Steel with Bronze decorations and Vermilion tubes), need to do some Googling before I tackle his bird. Can't do too much more of this one at the mo', need some fresh Sepia Wash to do his robes and I only got around to ordering it today, so who knows when it'll turn up.
aku-chan
Finished Mara! Painted Hookahs bird, if Google is right it should be a Peregrine Falcon. Wings and back are 1:2 Leather Brown/Bonewhite, body and head are Bonewhite, beak and talons are Ochre Yellow, it then got little Leather Brown dots and a Brown Wash.
aku-chan
Progress:- Did Hookahs robe (Iraqi Sand, shaded with 2:1 Iraqi Sand/Leather Brown, highlighted with 1:1 and 1:2 Iraqi Sand/Off-white and given a glaze of Sepia Wash). Couple more days and he should be done.
aku-chan
Finished Hookah off with more Vermillion tubes, Bronze connectors, a Brassy Brass and Sky Blue lantern (at least I think it's a lantern), Scarlett Red shoes and a Wolf Grey > Off-white > Grey Wash hairy dangler. And now he's got a Show Off thread.
