CGL says we shouldn't see that issue with the new starter boxes (the ones being released next week). We'll see if that is actually the case. 3

Long story. When I was 11 my friend Kris, @Kreve Lavelle, introduced me to D&D. This was way back in 1981. He had a few very badly (by today's standards) painted minis that his cousin had given him. I was interested, but it wasn't until he got this that I really sat up and took notice: I LOVED that dragon. I was rather obsessed with it, though I never acquired it (until Kris gave me the original which I now have in my basement), but it really started an interest in minis. I had neither the money nor the knowledge on how to paint minis though until several years later. In college around 1990, I had finished an art class where I had had to buy a bunch of acrylic paints. At the same time, I got my first credit card and the company said that I should buy something small to activate it. Woody ( @Dalth) and I went to the game store where he talked me into buying this (picture found on internet, not my copy): Woody had primer and brushes as he was painting Star Wars figures at the time. I took my acrylics and went to town on this guy. I enthusiastically painted through the 90's with base coat, wash, dry-brush style. Then when these forums first started up, I had already been an avid Reaper follower and so I joined, literally the first day the forums opened. From there Anne Forester, Jester, @Froggy the Great , and many others took me under their wings and showed me whole new and wondrous ways to paint and things I didn't even know were possible. I bought the entire MSP line when it came out and the rest is history, literally recorded though these forums (I've been doing WIPS here since about 2003). 8 hours ago, klarg1 said: I bid two obnoxious cats! One of the members of our gaming group went in on Bones 1. While we were waiting for people to gather for the first game post delivery, he asked us all to help him paint a couple. For a couple years after that I would paint during our games... far from ideal situation and I ended up being the only one doing any of the painting.... I had barely dented the Bones 1 stuff when his Bones 2 stuff arrived .... So at some point around the Bones 3 kickstarter I (with his consent) took all of his unpainted minis and paints home with me.
NomadZeke
I started with battletech..flargh..uh...2004/5? Then went to fantasy minis, and those became my focus, been on/off since then with painting frequency.

I don't need them that soon, but if you do, only save the artificial corks, they work a lot better than the natural ones.

I sarted playing D&D in....82? That Christmas, along side my AD&D Monster manual, my folks bought me a Ral Partha anti-Saladin and the Grenadier Hirelings set. We didn't use minis in the games so I never painted them. Fast forward a year or two later and new town, new group of gamers. One of them had this new game, Rogue Trader, and they had minis that needed to be assembled and painted in order to play. We liked using minis for that game so we started using them for D&D, and Shadowrun and..and..and... So yeah that's the start.

I started building model airplanes and cars when I was a kid. The first was a MPC Profile series Hawker Hurricane in 1/72 scale. Tried D&D in 1980 or so and started painting minis. Never really got into the game so I didn't start minis again until Battletech came out and have been painting ever since.

Back in the early 80s, I dabbled with enamels to paint some space ship minis I had purchased, but wasn't happy how they came out, so I gave up using minis at all for anything. In 89, the D&D group I just joined wanted to try this game called 40K: Rogue Trader that the DM had just bought. We played a game, and at the end of the night I recall declaring "I'll play this again, but I'm not buying anything for the game." A few weeks, and two or three games later, I broke down and said "Ok, I'll buy a box of Space Marines, but I'm not buying anything else." I bought the box of 30 space marines, some paints, and brushes, and followed the guides from GW to paint them. So that's all I have, 30 Space Marines. I have never bought another mini in my life. What? No, that's not a Bones 1 box. I don't know what you're talking about. No, there are not minis in those 100 Chessex boxes. Hey, stay out of there!!!!!!! I have no idea who's complete set of 40k 2nd edition rules those are - old owner of the house must have left them behind. 4 hours ago, Xiwo Xerase said: I don't have better words than this to express how I feel. First time I played D&D, which was the first time I played any table top RPG, I asked the others about the miniatures they were using. I got a quick breakdown on miniature painting and one even gave me a miniature. I was intrigued by the idea so I got a few GW paints (the only paint the FLGS we played at had) and another Reaper miniature to try. I was instantly hooked but it wasn't until a year and half later that I discovered the forums and really got into the hobby. Now its kind of taken over my life but I wouldn't have it any other way.

My best friend (who later became the singer in my band) and his brother were really good mini painters back in the early 80s. I was always too scared to try, though I had some minis because we were all avid AD&D players. I'd always wanted to get back to trying it at some point, and traded in some M:tG cards for paints and gave it a shot (coinciding with the original Bones KS, which is how I ended up here). Over the last couple years I've transitioned over to traditional art, but I want to make some time at some point to get back into painting minis. It's been a loooong time at this point! Even though I'd like to sell off a bunch of my collection, I do have a bunch I want to keep so, at worst, I can pick it up again when I retire in 11 years.
VitM
@NebulousMissy Good on you for getting out of an abusive situation. In a "what a small world" sort of way, we might have crossed paths at KublaCon '06. I don't recall if I entered that speed painting competition, but I spent a lot of time at the paint and take table when I wasn't hanging out with my friends.

That was a great paint and take, wasn't it Thank you to everyone for kind, impressed, uncomfortable, and speechless words. But I had a lot of help. I think everyone who gets out successfully ends up doing so with a lot of help. Which makes the self-enforced secrecy of these things all the worse. I had somewhere to go when I fled, I had the ability to pay my share of rent, I had parents who were willing to let me move back in when my tutoring business failed. I had resources, I had friends, I had family who were willing to un-kick me out. I was really lucky in all those respects. Without that I probably wouldn't be painting today. I'd have shoved everything from that time in a box and left it there, including those things I enjoyed. That and I'm too stubborn to give all that up.
