ttuckerman
l would find a 3d printer that I can rent (or use because I'm a alumnus) Don't need to get a less capable printer to use at home.

My library has a makerspace with a printer, and my wife is in the same department. I have printed a lot of 3d terrain, and they have only failed once. Not yet, it's definitely a "next 5 years" hobby goal. But we got a couple house projects that need completed first.

Not so much for making minis but for terrain and accessories. Now that you can get an Ender 3 for under $300 canadian it's very tempting. The only things holding me back are the wife's grumbling about the space it'll take up, I think I need a new laptop worse and that my finances haven't been great. I could afford it but just feel guilty about spending that much on hobby stuff right now. There's no doubt I'll get one eventually but I'm holding off a bit. 11 hours ago, Dilvish the Deliverer said: I toy with the idea of getting one. The biggest thing holding me back is the sneaking suspicioun that it would get used briefly, then sit around collecting dust. This is a serious concern of mine too. It wouldn't be the first time that's happened with something I've bought. But it would still be nice for the times I did want it.

No, and probably. At some future point I may decide to embrace zBrush and computer sculpting and jewelry design. If and when I do that, then yes, I would also get a 3D printer capable of rendering my designs for casting.

But I want a hundred different figures... TBH, if you want 100 or more of the same figure, you're better off using traditional methods like resin or pewter. 3D printers are better for short run and one off stuff. 5

Yes, but not for a while. Let the technophiles overpay for underperformance. I'll jump in when the price is commoditized and quality is sufficient for my needs.

To be fair though, just because traditional methods are better for mass production than 3d printers are, that doesn't mean people don't use their 3d printers for "mass production". Especially for niche items, such as our hobby uses. For many of us, the investment of the time the printer takes gives a better return than laying out cash for finished pieces, or messing about with things like resin casting. I've spent the last three weeks printing nothing but various pieces from a modular ruins set I found on Thingiverse so I could build myself some ruins. Took a lot of time on the printer, but total cost to me was about $30 for what will be a table full of ruins. Had I purchased them in resin, it would have been $100s. Had I hand built them all, it would have taken me at least as much time as my printer took - this way, the printer did most of the work for me while I was being "productive", leaving me to just assemble and paint. And there are projects like OpenForge, which allow people to basically print their own Dungeon Forge like pieces, which means a lot of "mass production." But where the printer has really shined for me is being able to manufacture solutions to little problems, such as quickly designing and printing custom brackets for the blinds in my office, or risers for a kitchen dish rack my wife has.

I plan on buying a 3D printer sometime in the future. It's not currently planned for this year. If I actually played games with people, it might be higher on the priority list.
