Question for January 28, 2019

What is your favorite superhero franchise?

Batman: the Animated Series and Batman: Beyond, followed closely by the animated Justice League and Teen Titans. D.C. Did the most justice to their characters in those animated series. I can't say I've cared for the newer animated series and movies I've seen from D.C. though.

Batman the animated series treated their characters with a great deal of humanity, even the villains.

A real whole haggis, freshly cooked, will look like this:

***snip***

The interior is quite granular with the minced meat and cooked barley readily distinguishable.

And yes, that is a sheeps stomach it has been cooked in. You are NOT obliged to eat it...

I would eat that!

I have no problem with organ meat, I love liver when done well and with shrooms and onions and bacon it is delicious.

Black Pudding....hmmmmm with apple!

Kidneys..not really...

It's a tie between Batman and the Punisher.

I'm with Redambrosia on this one.

Although I'd also add Green Lantern:- The Animated Series and Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes (at least until management meddling destroyed it part way through season 2) to the list.

Spider-Man, hands down. I've had a continual subscription to ASM for at least a quarter-century. The book has had some ups and downs, to be sure, but I still think on average it's very, very good.

In actual comic books, I will also mention Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: IDW is doing an incredible job with the franchise, and the first 50 issues of the IDW run was one of the best things going in comics as it was coming out.

I also read Wonder Woman (though I care more at this point about where the character has been than where she's headed right now... Current writing on her is very meh and has been for about five years).

Ms. Marvel is pretty great. Kamala Khan rocks!

And the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is hilarious!

(There are a lot of other comics I'd mention, from not-Marvel, but the question is about supers...)

Outside printed material... Daredevil had a great run on Netflix, and the first seasons of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage were great. In movies? I find a lot of them entertaining, but mostly pretty poor. Marvel, especially, has embraced the Star Wars model of "we don't have to make GOOD movies, we just have to make movies." They are fun to watch, but they mostly aren't doing much to push the capes-and-tights genre into new ground, they aren't demanding much nuance from their actors, and they aren't using their special effects budgets to do anything new. As much money as super hero movies are making right now, the studios can afford to take more risks, and (notwithstanding a few outliers like Black Panther, which is only barely an outlier and only on the axis of racial inclusion) they just aren't doing that.

I do love The Incredibles.

Really unpopular opinion; I am totally burned out on superheroes. I used to really like x-men, though I wouldn't call myself a mega-fan or anything but if I'd had to pick a few years ago, it'd be that. But now I really just cant be bothered to see any more superhero films, I'm really over it. The hero saves the day, there's probably a love interest, if it's edgy they might kill the love interest... even Infinity Wars with it's darker end wasn't different enough to really hook me into the next film, because there's always a next film.

It's not such an unpopular opinion... But it sounds to me like you're burnt out on superhero *movies.*

(I apologise if the following seems preachy...I mean it in a friendly way, this is just one of my buttons...)

Your FLCBS (support local business!), or (good for both the wallet and the community!) your local library, would be happy to help you find something in print that you'd find engaging. Despite not being the historical "Golden Age" of comics, we live in a truly golden time for comics of all types, and I guarantee there's something for you (even if it's not strictly capes and tights).

SKUNKMAN! He was in a skit on a spin off of Saturday Night Live...the show went belly up pretty quickly, but I remember the skit.

Otherwise I don't much care for Super Heroes at all.

Question for January 26, 2019

Are you a carnivore, omnivore or veggiesaurus?

I have a general philosophy when it comes to food, I will try anything that is considered food by some culture (save for a very short list of things that seem too possibly dangerous to be worth the risk, such as fugu).  That said, I am currently trying to limit my meat intake to one meal a day, for health reasons.

Hmm...Batman or maybe X-Men.  I also really liked the Iron Man movies (I've only seen 1 and 2)

True- I am talking about movies, while I'm sure there's something in print that might engage me more, superhero as a genre is still not hugely appealing to me. I have to admit I don't do a huge amount of reading- my free time mainly being d&d prep or miniature painting- so when I do dedicate time to reading it's not likely to be a comic book over a traditional (usually adventure/fantasy book) The only reason I have seen as many of these superhero films as I have is OH and I have "Limitless" a cinema loyalty program where we pay a fee per month and can go see any film at all, so OH often wants to see everything that comes through!

My favorite set of comic books are the mouse-guard books. Beautiful art, good story, cute mice being little badelfs. It's great.

Hubby also got me three books for Christmas, one a Labyrinth (as in the movie) prequel, one a firefly book, and the other a book based off someone's dnd campaign (I can't remember what it's called right now). I've only had the opportunity to read the dnd one, and it's flipping hilarious!

There's definitely a lot of worthwhile non-super comic books out there.

I enjoyed the Jareth comic. I don't know that it needed to happen, but it was a fun read.

I suspect I know the D&D comic you're talking about, but I can't recall the title, either. My current D&D-ish comic read is Rat Queens... It's decidedly rude, but also hilarious and much of the main character interaction reminds me of my own table.

I've only read a little of Mouse Guard, but I liked it. Need to pick up more.

I'm also rereading the original Alita manga in advance of the movie...

Canned Haggis can be OK, you slice it and grill it. The trick is to find some way of keeping it moist while it cooks. Burnt haggis is disgusting.

When we were in Scotland, we found the same 3-layer stack of sliced McSween's Haggis, neeps & tatties in nearly every pub. It may not have been the pinnacle of the form, but it was pretty good.
