If any of you are like me, you received a package stating you were naughty.

For the life of me, I don't know why Reaper would consider me Naughty.  I spend money on the Halloween and Christmas promotions.

I have backed 3 of the 4 Bones Kickstarters...

Wait, maybe I'm being punished for not backing Bones KS 2?  I'll need to think on that some more.

I have been toying with the idea of painting this...thing.  Whatever it is.  In order to do so, I needed to get a closer look.

1234280188_Coalie2.jpg.675021e112680af4d8fea459a0c8fbe5.jpg

Here it is.  I have heard rumors of what it is.  Some people say it is Bonesium without any hardener.  Some say it is some sort of silicone eraser.

But, I think I puzzled it out.

It must be a miniature.  The only problem is, which one.

It is like no miniature I have ever seen.  I scoured the Reaper web store for days on end.  After several pots of coffee, I came to a conclusion.

It is painted black, so it must be part of the Legendary Encounters line.  But for the life of me, I cannot find a model with a matching image or any evidence that this "lump of coal" has a SKU.

The more I stared at it, the more it showed me it's true colors!

See that subtle face sculpted into the mini?

I decided that to punish us for not backing ALL of the Kickstarters, Reaper sent us a model sculpted by an anonymous sculptor who managed to really soften the details.

To add insult to injury, they sent us the main body without the whole sprue of facial and limb features.  Talk about punishing the "Naughty!"  Reaper, you have stooped too low.

I think I narrowed down which creature this is supposed to be.  I remembered an old monster from the first Monstrous Compendium I ever owned (TSR D&D 2nd Ed.). The humble Galeb Duhr.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who sees the resemblance.

Now, I am the first to admit that my sculpting and Green Stuff skills are amateurish and unrefined.
But I can't stand the thought of an incomplete miniature.

And, although Reaper usually has AWESOME customer service for replacing missing parts, for this particular model I fear no replacements would be forthcoming for so naughty a Forumite as myself.

Alas, I need to do it myself.  But, if this material is silicone, I fear green stuff may not stick to it.

So, I needed a framework:

I drilled some holes into the model at key locations.  I superglued in some paperclip bits.  It seemed sturdy enough.

I then proceeded to do my best to emulate a Galeb Duhr.

However, due to IP, I'm sure Reaper calls this a Coal Golem.

I gave him the name Coalie, as you'll read why in the Show Off post later...

Now, to paint this model.

For the base, I wanted simple stone scree like you would find littering the floor of a dwarven mine.

This is the Stone Grey Triad.

I ended up going a little higher by adding some Frosty Blue into the mix a few times.

Then I got to work on the eyes.  I imagined the coal golem should have glowing lumps of fiery coal for eyes...

Added lines of Hearth Fire

Then stippled in some Fire Red.  I like the effect.

Crude OSL with Golden Yellow mixed with Hearth Fire.  The left eye came out better, in my opinion.

I hope Reaper will think twice in the future about tossing misshapen, incomplete models our way as "free promos" and labeling us as Naughty.

I'm sorry for not backing all the Kickstarters, OK!  Are you happy now?

Well, I'll link to the Showoff Thread Here.

I hope you liked this idea.

Let me know what you think!

That is a WONDERFULLY imaginative creation, BEAUTIFULLY crafted & painted. VERY WELL DONE!

Here is the next project for “Try to paint all the things!”

I plan to paint her as a very light skinned elf.  I might try an Autumnal color scheme.

This is an animal companion to a kobold Ranger in a module.  The character art has it light green with dark green stripes.  A little cliche, but I don’t care.

There are two arm choices.  I went with the ones making it look like he was grabbing something.  Got him ready with white primer.

My 5 1/2 yo son is super into Batman.  I had set up a Pathfinder game for the grownups, but only filled 2/4 seats.  My son has shown a little and growing interest in tabletop gaming.  So I made some stats for Batman as a Pathfinder character and used his LEGO Batman on the battle grid.

Here are how it came out: attributes were rolled.
      Race Human
      Class Ranger (Urban) lvl 1
      Str 16
      Dex 19 (+2 human)
      Con 14
      Int 13
      Wis 14
      Cha 8

      Favored Class Ranger +1 HP
      Trait: Rich Parents
      Trait: Deft Dodger (+1 Reflex)
      Favored Enemy Humanoid (human)
      Feat - Improved Unarmed Strike
Feat Human - Exotic Weapon Prof - Shuriken

Skills - don’t remember exactly, sheet isn’t in front of me:
Acrobatics, Craft (alchemy), Disable Device, knowledge (local), perception, Survival, Stealth

Gear- I took some liberties here for flavor:
Mwk Studded Leather, Batarangs(shuriken shaped like a bat available in a lethal or non lethal variety), smoke bombs (combine thunderstone and smoke stick in one thrown item same price as both combined), Mwk thieves tools, sap, spiked gauntlets x 2 (his sharp things sticking out of his arms), Grapnel: (Light Crossbow + 50ft silk rope + Mwk grappling hook + 100gp to account for the “gnomish winch”) I would have loved to make it a hand crossbow, but didn’t want to waste two feats on exotics.  I just tacked on cost to the various gear to use up the gold from rich parents and still leave him with a good kit.

He made level two and I chose an alt. Option for weapon style: thrown weapon.  That gave him bonus feat of Precise Shot without needing Point Blank Shot, but I plan on adding it later.

Let me know what you think.

My son didn’t have the attention span to stay at the table for long: his cousins were in the pool, so he ended up there.  My friend always plays the Cleric, but he ran Batman as a second character and had a blast with it.

This is my most ambitious attempt to date.  A mini-campaign I’m running some people through calls for many kobolds of varying colors and classes.  I had 12 Kobolds from Bones I, the 4 pack in metal that those were based off of (03064), the metal Leader and Sorcerer (03024), the 12 awesome new kobolds from Bones 4, and a 7 pack (I may have gotten a freebie, I thought I bought a six pack) of kobolds from the Ral Partha TSR Official D&D 2nd Edition line, stamped 1989.  That’s a whopping 37 figures.  I want to paint tribes from all 5 chromatic factions, and want to have as few duplicate poses per faction possible.  The Ral Partha kobolds have a more simian or canine face compared to the more reptilian face of the Reaper models, but I’m still going to fold those into each faction.  The Adventure calls out a Cleric (Red) a Ranger, (Green) and a Sorcerer (Green).  Those are the only ones with specific art, and I have models representative of each present without need for modification.  Also, I am not planning to add to the bases at all.

And I want to finish all of this in about a month (unlikely)!

      Wish me luck!

This figure is next on the agenda.  I cleaned up mold lines, cut off the “base” part of his integral base, washed him and mounted him on a Reaper 1 inch base.
