Dragons!

Recommended Posts

Nethyrmaul looks phenomenal so far.  Very nice work with the scales.

One question though.  What is the dragon in the big boxto the left of nethyrmaul?

Yikes.  Missed a lot of pages this morning.  Everything so far looks fierce!  Especially love the color scheme of the temple dragon.

Incredibly skillful and speedy work!

I've been working on time goals. And frankly, with something to reference I don't need to spend time obsessing about what colors to use and where to put them and that saves lots of time. :)

That big dragon is Narthrax. I'm actually going to work on him next. :D

And so begins Narthrax! And very yellow too! Started witha light grey primer base and then two coats of Palamino Gold for decent coverage.

Color aside, I'm playing around with an idea I had if I ever got my hold on a Ma'al Drakar again. I figured Narthrax is a good test subject for it.

Wings are not actually glued on. Considering whether I paint them separately or not.

Went against my usual grain and started with the eyes. I usually don't add them until mid-way through the process, getting most of the head fleshed out first. Bunch of stippling action to get the texture in it. Will give it a wash of some kind to smooth it out a bit.

He's now in his really ugly stage as I got a messy bit of color blocking going on. It will end up looking quite different in the end, but this I find to be a very helpful step for me to get the overall feel to see if I'm going in the right direction.

I've been on a long hiatus with Narthrax. Started on the undersides of the wings and just couldn't get passed where I was. Hit some painter's block. So I stepped back and moved onto a few other projects instead.

Then today I finally got the itch to take a look a brush to him again, though I still wasn't sure what to do. His wings ended up looking like this back in November -

Was a good start, but I just wasn't feeling it. It needed more than just a bit of color stripes on the "fingers". Spent about an hour or so looking back and forth between the wing and the internet in search of inspiration and discovered the wing patterns on draco lizards! :D

And this is where we've ended up tonight after about an hour of minor repainting and tentative testing -

Oh yeah, I'm loving it. I can see the future of the whole dragon again!

I'm a little concerned that I'm doing all this work on the underside of a wing that's very hidden. Seems a waste of time. But I think the solution is that this may be the first mini I put on a plinth.

The last couple nights, my focus has been to get at the hard to reach places, that can't be done if he was standing upright.

I've accomplished finishing the underwing pattern and after taking pictures from multiple sides to help me determine where shadows will be, I've thrown on some pretty deep, but varied, shadow washes using Nightshade Purple. I may have gone too deep, but we'll see as we continue on.

I'm now trying to work out the pattern details along the rest of his body which has been going through a bit of a change. Originally I'd planned out a line of pointed stripes. Some of that will still exist in a faint way but I've changed the pattern to be more bold and blocky.

Narthrax and I have been fighting since yesterday. I thought I knew where I was going, but things just never looked right. I paint patterns, I do area clean ups, I paint his little toes. I painted his face three different ways before I just went back to a simpler non-patterned look. Hours in between each little thing I do just staring at him and being annoyed that it didn't feel like it was coming together.

I stopped and painted the rock.  Then went back and stared at him.

1988783871_20200123_134807(2).jpg.98cfe219dafd8c0055dc2f8471308400.jpg

After a good long look I decided just to go into details, at least in this area. He was just looking flat even with all the patterning. And so I started lining scales and washing in more shadows. For the lining I tested going Brown Liner on one of his more hidden feet and hated it. So the lining here is done with the Nightshade Purple I've been using for shadows on the darker areas of the skin while the areas that are lighter, or in what will be highlighted areas, I went with Ruddy Leather.

It looked better, but not perfect and so then I bit the bullet and just started finding a way to do the highlighted areas.

And here's where we've ended up. I don't hate it. It's a step in the right direction. Went a little strong on the orange on the rock highlights, but that's easy enough to tone down.

Honestly, I feel like I've returned to "kindergarten" painting. Feeling like I don't know what I'm doing and just figuring it out step by step as I slop on paint. This week has been an exercise in not being afraid to do something because it can just be painted over.

We're getting somewhere! Far less stressed about it than I was last week. Gave in to the need to just focus down and detail small bits at a time. And keep reminding myself I can always paint over unhappiness. My hope is that I actually finish him tonight. I gave myself a time goal, which is end of the month, so if not tonight, then I have until Friday. But I'm trying.

Patterned up all of the body and shadowed it up.

Working now on the patterning and finish on the top of the wings. I'm a little bothered with the straightness of the stripes pulling out from his body, so I'll need to adjust those.

I don't know that I'm happy with the striations I've started along his back. I really like it where I've done it on his sides and arms, but it's not feeling right on the back. So it may get toned down.

He's looking awesome!  Your patterning is amazing - it's been great to see how you did it.  Thanks for such detailed pictures and instructions!

Now onto the challenge for the year! Some of you may know I acquired these lovely fellows at an auction a few months back.

1126789020_20191007_191532(600x800).thumb.jpg.e49e9621400e460d902f915b1bc6051d.jpg

An awesome find. Super excited I won.

I decided that I would paint them all within the year. One a month. As I've already painted the green and blue ones already, it left me that first month to finish Narthrax. I'll probably resell the green one and I'm actually going to paint the blue one again because he was the only one of the whole set that was missing parts - a wing. I'll just do him as a wingless dragon.

So we start with the first one - Black Dragon!

20200203_155247(2).jpg.ae1c557da8e96b5fa3c2e4a953e4f3e2.jpg

As you can see, some of them were assembled and simply painted. So the first step will be to clean them off.
