lstormhammer
Another series is the early Shannara series, (The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara, & The Wishsong of Shannara) by Terry Brooks. These have roleplaying written all over them. Actually, unfortunatly, Brooks just stole the Middle Earth books, and renamed them. He's one of the worst. As for Feist's Riftwar books: Very good. I think his 'Serpentwar Saga' was even better. For those of you who like mysteries, check out the Brother Cadfael series. (PBS had them for a short while, Derek Jacobi was Brother Cadfael). --lstormhammer
ladystorm
Wilbur Smiths Warlock series : The Seventh Scroll, River God, and Warlock. I remember those, I liked them. cbs
Ranger Man
If you want to talk about Tolkien ripoffs, Terry Brooks is no where near as bad as Dennis McKiernan's Dark Tower Trilogy. That is so obvious with the warrows and whole total background. But this does not mean that I don't enjoy them.
lstormhammer
And that's the reason I read the Martins. It's not a Tolkien rip-off. And it's so very, very good. --Mmm, newbook out soon. --lstormhammer
Zephyrus
Some favorite authors : Anne McCaffrey (Pern) Robin McKinley (All) Charles DeLint (Fairly recent reading) Esther Friesner (Good campy books) John Irving (Not Fantasy, but really good) I very much enjoyed the Black Company books, just finished reading Redwall and will be looking for the next one at the library soon. There is a fourth Earthsea book, Tehanu, in case people are interested. Haven't read the Thieves woeld books yet. I will when I get the time. In the middle of reading the Horseclans books by Robert Adams. They are not bad. I know I am forgetting a lot, but not thinking too well at the moment. Dalyn
New Martin book soon? Alright! I've been trying to not pay attention because I know it takes him a while to write each one - and I'd much rather him take as much time as he feels that he needs to finish each one, rather than just crank one out. And even when it comes out, I'd have to wait a couple more years for the next one and then some more for the one after that. I really hope that he sticks with his dual trilogy or whatever he's calling it. I'd hate to have another series of indeterminate length. *cough*Jordan*cough, cough* I mean, it's one thing if they're sequels and the first story gets answered. But when the first story is still dragging along, it can be annoying (at least for those of us with short attention spans).
lstormhammer
This I heard from the Man himself (it's good to maintain connections with old jobs). There will be 6 books, two sagas of three. The first three are out now, 10 years IC will pass between each one. I believe the next one is called 'Feast of Crows'. --hope that helps. -- Ser lstormhammer, Knight of the Watch. gwangi32
Many people have a preconcieved view of Conan the Barbarian taken from the comics or the movies. †While I liked the comics, pastiches and movies the original Conan of Robert E. Howard is fine reading. †Some of the best around. †If you plan to read just one story "The Hour of the Dragon" is the longest and many say the best. †My two favorites are "A Witch Shall be Born" †and "Beyond the Black River". I first read these stories back in High School in the 70s and I have yet to find a writer who describes action as well. †Though I do like the R. A. Salvatore stories based in Forgotten Realms. †And I like Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time (far more than his Conan pastiches). †And the all time great in Fantasy for me is The Lord of the Rings. †I just finished rereading it and I still get verclempt. I envy my brother in law who is reading the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings for the first time. † But, my all time favorite read is Conan, while sipping a soda and eating a personal pan pizza. †And if you like Conan Robert E. Howard wrote alot of short fantasy fiction. †I like most of it. †But, today it's easier to find other writers.
abngi
The Deed of Paksenarion (a trilogy by Elizabeth Moon) is perhaps one of the best/most believable real-person-as-a-hero sets ever. Steven Brust had some great ones in the first three books of the Dragaera series, which also got released as a three-books-in-one-volume deal. Can't recommend it enough! Steven Page
While we are praising Robert Howard, let me mention one of my favorite stories he wrote: "The Grey God Passes" , a heroic, mythic account of the Battle of Clontarff. Much good historical material, told as legend. Makes you want to see Reaper do for the Irish what is has done for the Scots Highlanders (NOT TOO SUBTLE HINT!) ??? Ranger Man
Additional recommendations: *The Kinsman Saga - Ben Bova *The Janassaries Series - Jerry Pournelle *Starship Troopers (the book) *Most anything written by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle *Most anything written by Harry Harrison especially the Stainless Steel Rat series *Most anything written by Harry Turtledove
nadinbrzezinski
Ok here are some of my choices Starship Troopers by Heinlein, the book not the movie. A Stranger in a Stranger's Land, again Heinlein. Almost anythiing by Asimov I'm also very much into Turtledove and his antics, as well as Sterling's Nantucket Island series. Weiss and Hickman original dragonlance series. Orson Scott Card Ender's Game, and to be quite honest, the novella is even better than the book, which is amazing. I personally do not like the Honor Harrington series, but other works by Webber, sure, they are great. That is my short list.

Thank you ser, I actually got most of the same info off of his website. I visited it a bunch right after his last book, but I started getting too hyped up for the next one and he hadn't even started writing it yet so I decided to cease and desist out of a desire to maintain my sanity. ;) I guess that Book 5 is supposed to be "A Dance of Dragons" now? And Book 6 is gonna have something to do with wolves - "A Brotherhood of Wolves"? Or am I confusing that with Farland's stuff? Either way, I can't wait. It's probably a good time to re-read them again and refresh them in my minds.
gwangi32
*Most anything written by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle I especially liked the Dream Park series. † And I liked DINOSAUR SUMMER by Greg Bear. An oldie but goodie is DARKER THAN YOU THINK by Jack Williamson. †I've had the book in my pile of "looks interesting" books for years. †Finally read it just a last month and was glad I did, very enjoyable. And there was A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER by Roger Zelazny. †That was a fun read for Lovecraft fans. †And I am a Lovecraft fan. †
