77057: Juliette, Female Sorceress

Recommended Posts

So, in the WIP thread for Dierdra, I tried painting the eyes on a Bones figure.  This is the (un)lucky one.  Since I'm waiting for the new primer to cure on Dierdra, I figured I'd work on Juliette.

I plan to use Juliette as practice for some of the painting I'll need to do for Dierdra later (particularly skin and hair).  So far I have her skin basecoated and her eyes mostly done.

I tried to avoid painting her lips.  I'm not certain that was a good idea.  She looks... evil.  While I was painting her, she reminded me of Hexadecimal from Reboot but, here, she looks like either demonic or undead.  I'm sure she'll improve with paint.  ("I'm not evil.  I'm just painted that way."?)

So far so good on her right eye.  Her left hair is mostly hidden by her hair so I just need to make sure there's the impression of an eye there.

Most of the large patches without liner are parts where I scraped mold lines.  I should probably go back and reline those patches.  Same with the parts of her hair I missed when relining tonight.

This figure poses a couple problems.  Her left leg is kinda flat and her cuffed boot is missing its cuff.  Her right boot is kinda buried in the integral base, like she's standing in mud.  I think these are both mold issues that I'll just have to work around.  (Now I just have to figure out how to make the base look suitably muddy.)

I like a touch of evil. Evil is the new good. :poke:

She's not the most well-cast figure, mine also had problems, but mine was from the Bones 1 kickstarter. I feel like they stopped selling her at one point due to issues, but I'm not certain of that (I think her nose/face was coming out like Voldemort). She's back in the store though. Did they remake the mold?

Yes, they fixed the mold.  I've got the original Bones version with the flipper hand, the new Bones version with proper fingers and a metal one.  I should probably paint one.

You will probably want to paint her lips eventually, but you can paint them dark purple or black or whatever.  It will look off when the rest of her is painted if you don't.

“Evil has a good quality of its own.”

I’m sure she’ll look better by the end.

I definitely will!  I just didn’t want to lose the definition of her lips yet.

I haven't been able to hobby so far this week but I did some color mockups today.  I think this is what I'm going with:

2032182333_2019021477057ColorMarkup(option3).jpg.3fba2bb578d8679e4a947e0f7767b95b.jpg

I'm not sold on the border but I may use it as the basis for other embellishments.

These colors are (all paints are Reaper MSP or Bones):

  • Skin: 09445 Youthful Flesh
  • Hair: 09257 Blond Hair
  • Dress: 09404 Cinnamon Red
  • Border: 09302 NMM Gold Base
  • Girdle, boots, bracer, and corks: 09109 Ruddy Leather
  • Belts, straps, and potion vial holder: 09030 Leather Brown
  • Leggings and scroll case: 09427 Nut Brown
  • Potion vial contents: 09117 Cyan Blue
  • Scroll case caps: 09086 Stone Grey (as a stand-in for a dull silver-ish metallic)

An alternate idea for the scroll case caps (and buckles) would be to do an NMM gold or bronze instead.  This would reduce the number of paints in use (by one).

If 09302 NMM Gold Base turns out not to have good coverage, I believe 09074 Palomino Gold or 09459 Ogre Skin should work as an undercoat.

Worked on her flesh and lips today.  I didn't think I was steady enough to do her eyes.  I also painted her hair with Walnut Brown to set up working on it later.

I think I need to work a little more on her nose.  Her right cheek could use a little more blending too.

Mostly so I don't forget later:

  • Shadows (to darkest): 1:1 Youthful Flesh:Rosy Shadow, 3:1 Youthful Flesh:Brick Red, 3:1 Youthful Flesh:Walnut Brown
  • Highlights (to highest): Youthful Flesh, Fair Highlight, Linen White
  • Lips: 1:1 Youthful Flesh:Old West Rose

Last night's work was painting her hair and eyebrow:

It looks like I got some paint on her face (her forehead, her nose, and right cheek) so that will need to be fixed.  The very front of her part needs a little work too.  Neither of these look difficult.

After that, since I'm painting from inside to out, will be her leggings and then her bracer (which you can barely see on her left wrist) and boots.

Worked on her leggings, boots, and bracer and basecoated her dress/jacket:

I believe:

  • Her nose needs a little more work.  I'm not quite sure what.  I think the top of her nose needs more shading.
  • Her left thigh could use higher highlights, but not much more.  (I think her calf is fine.)
  • The inside of her left boot, around her toe, could use some highlighting, but not much.
  • Her right boot needs its highlights brought up a little more.  (It's largely in shadow so it shouldn't come up too much.)
  • Her right cheek still needs work.
  • Both cheeks need blush.  (She looks cold.  Or undead.)
  • Her hands need to be revisited.

I'm a little concerned about the highlighting and shadows on the front of her right boot, but I believe it looks fine in these pictures.  (Remember that the cuff at the top of her right boot is missing.)

Paint progressions (all paints Reaper MSP or Bones):

  • Leggings: Walnut Brown, Blackened Brown, Nut Brown, Intense Brown, Rich Leather, Amber Gold, Linen White (although I had problems with both the Amber Gold and Linen White so they're not present)
  • Boots and bracer: Walnut Brown, Blackened Brown, Ruddy Leather, Oiled Leather, Burnt Orange, Golden Blonde, Linen White

What do you think so far?  Do any more adjustments need to be made to the parts that are already painted?

I think she looks good, but I can agree with these statements, minus the dead part. I think with her eyes not being finished it comes off as cold or undead. Maybe if you do the eyes before attacking that she'll look like she has more life, then you'll know how much work to do on her cheeks? That said, a little rosiness to her cheeks is never a bad thing.

Maybe her left hand could use a bit more definition between fingers, but otherwise I like it.

Even without making changes to her, I'd be proud to put her on my table as is. I like what you've done.

Beautiful work.

I agree about her nose. Perhaps the line between her nose and cheek is too stark?

Yes, I think that's it.  I think the problem isn't the line itself but that there is no shading on the sides of her nose.

Her cheeks should be a little rosy.  She's full of life and she's here to kick butt and chew bubblegum.  And she's out of bubblegum.

Unrelated thought: Maybe her lips should be a little redder.

Thank you.  There's still plenty of work to be done before, well, she's done.  I haven't even started work on her accessories yet.

I worked more on her face and touched up her boots.  After spending over two hours, I'm a little tired of working on her face so I'm going to leave it for a bit.  I think her nose looks a lot better.

I tried giving her a little redness in her cheeks.  I'm not sure I succeeded.

Next up is touching up her leggings and working on her dress.  Unless I summon the courage to paint her eye.  (I'm going to have to do that sooner or later...)

Touched up her leggings and worked on her dress:

I think I lost the midtone on the front of her dress.  The dark shadow in that fold there is too wide too.  I could use some help on seeing if there is any more shading on the outside of her dress that needs to be adjusted.  (I haven't worked on the inside folds yet.)

The color progression is, from shadow to highlight: Walnut Brown, Bloodstain Red, Spattered Crimson, Cinnamon Red (midtone), Fresh Blood, Magma Red, Lava Orange, Explosion Orange, Sun Yellow, Linen White

Is she smirking or is it just me?

I worked on tightening the shadows on the front of her dress:

I think the shadow looks better but I still need to work a little on blending.  I've either lost the highlighting on the left near the top (or I never had it) and I may need to do a little highlighting on the right, between her vials and the edge.

I may take a break from her dress and work on her accessories.
