I had to take my wife to the ER after painting in the same room. I was using a dark brown I had never used before. She started coughing and had swelling in her lips and throat. We bolted for the hospital at that point. It got bad, but then in the ER waiting room she began to clear up. I am floored. I just bought these, just got back into the hobby, was really excited. I hope she is feeling much better, that would have been terrifying. I've never had THAT experience, but I did have a significant allergic response to handling fresh raw Bones plastic at the con last year. I had to leave class and run to my room for allergy medication. My hands broke out in blisters after handling unwashed figures in class. What did she injest (if anything) right before this happened? Did she enter a hobby room where you were already painting -or- did you set up a paint station (in the kitchen?) where she was? Point of all the questions is: how do you know (after having eliminated all other possible irritant sources) that it was a tiny bottle of paint? And that could be an unlucky coincidence. ...what other things is she allergic to ? Think through a list of every tiny little action she took for the ten minutes prior to the reaction. I was painting a Bones model, Eldritch Demon as a gift for a buddy. I hear what you're saying, TGP, and we are running through all the details. I really don't want it to be the paints. But tonight has been very ordinary, nothing new or out of place. The only new thing is using my paints for the first time. She has some wicked bad allergies so I'm guessing that brown has some chemical that really sets her off. I honestly can't recall painting near her before. My old game rooms have been isolated to some degree. I don't have a gameroom now so my paint station is right next to her desk. I was painting and she was putting slides together on her laptop for work. I've bagged all the items that paint touched and taken it away. Cyradis Posted February 13, 2019 Share Posted February 13, 2019 I'd doubt the paint too, but it seems like you are noting other variables pretty well. Did you do any mini prep around that time? In prepping a resin figure, I noticed that it emitted a smell that other figures hadn't when I filed it. How's the outside bloom going? Some areas are getting first flowers, and some are in a blizzard. Often weather forecasts will also have mentions of allergen content in the air, and possible troubles. One of my mom's friends ended up with valley fever (bedridden for weeks, and he was a 6'5" body builder) just by stopping at a gas station in the wrong location - the location where nasty fungus spores were in the air. Glitterwolf Posted February 13, 2019 Share Posted February 13, 2019 Wow that's scary! Did she touch the minis at some points? Like Inarah experienced some people react to the residue on the minis. If it stays unclear than I would suggest asking the medics for a test to see what caused it? Maybe even bring that paint and see if they can test it somehow? There might be other factors that caused this or even a combination of factors. Good luck with this! She's had bad allergies to lots of strange things her entire life. We've been dealing with these for 30 years as a couple. So we keep an eye on anything that might be a trigger. The only thing that was different last night was the paint. I've never painted right next to her before that I can think of. This is new paint with a new formula so might have some new chemical we never encountered before. It seems odd that three drops of paint could do this, but I've also seen her throat start closing from half a banana in an assembly hall. Also, once we got some fresh air into her at the hospital waiting room, she started to perk up. In fifteen minutes she was a whole new person. But back in the car she said she could feel it again, probably from my clothes and skin. She's tired this morning but otherwise fine. She's a machine! The Nut Brown base isn’t anything particularly special or unusual and the additives and pigments in that color are also used in many others. Is latex one of the allergies she has? Because most paint bases are blends of acrylic resins with either vinyl or latex resins. Usually that’s a contact allergy but you never know...still, it’s odd. I have so many minis that need painted!
