All the information you need should be here.

As usual, the new format holds a "hard mode" challenge!

March and April 2019 Challenge

Your challenge is: 9!

Bonus Challenge: The First!
March 8th is the birthday of Ralph H. Baer, often called the "father of video games." To tribute these early games - paint a character to resemble an early video game character (Think 16-bit era or sooner) the more obscure, the better!

Addendum: It doesn't have to ONLY exist in that era. It doesn't matter if it's the only incarnation of it like Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure or Power Pete, or originated but is on 5183 of the series (looking at you, Final Fantasy.) but the spirit is to that era.

Bonus Challenge: The Second!
Bringing back the classic for April, the "Fools' Brigade!" Paint a mini in a patently absurd scheme! CAV with a bullseye on it...elf with an "I'm organic" tabbard, etc. The more outlandish the better!

Hard Mode Challenge! Ides Of March
Famously known as the date when Julies Caesar was assassinated, March 15. Make a small diorama (or large, whichever) of such an assassination about to, or having recently happened. Characters and environment. This will be counted as # of miniatures + 2 base and scenery.)

As always, the game is made up and the points don't matter!

Whoooo, the new thread ^_^

EDIT: I still intend to do some of the bonus challenges from the previous period though... At least the shelf of shame one.  Still debating about the finger painting one ^_^;;;;  That 8/16 bit classic era of gaming definitely sounds like an interesting choice to try for....

Hey look I'm on time. Maybe even... early...

I begin this post as a place to store links to show off threads.

This here is a placeholder for the obelisk I painted earlier this month but haven't taken pics of yet.

Bones 4 Owlbear

Obelisk of Eeeeeevil

Death Star Lillies

War Pugs

I... may have hit quota? It depends on if the owlbear and obelisk are considered large. Owlbears are Large in the Monster Manual, 'tis true. And the obelisk takes up 4 squares on my gaming mat.

In the queue pile:

Cultists!

Minis I need for Saturday (a constant struggle as the adventure continues)

Clockwork dragon

Various monsters, some half-finished

Pile of d00ds. Just... a pile.

I can play again, at least until a toy or two arrives.  I even have a few things to take pics of already, if I get around to it.

Succeeded the first time.  I will try again!  though i hope crossovers count because i just finished a bunch of characters this week even though they were started last week.  the question is, can they be molded into a challenge for this month's challenge!

The last couple of months was exceedingly busy and I am surprised i got anything done for hobbying but i did find a little time between work and sleep and doctors appointments and this is the result!

I'm back in, hopefully I'll get more done this time. I'm considering doing a dragon for the April Fools challenge if I can sort out a suitably ridiculous colour scheme ^_^

I have no ideas. Be lucky to do nine of something...

That Bones bull that is sculpted like it is made of scales, does it score as 2-3 ?

...not-a-gorgon...

??  Not a Gorgon?  I thought Gorgons went public domain 1000 years ago +/— 200 yrs.

Or maybe not. Maybe a scale covered bull called a Gorgon dates to 1607 and went public domain, IDK, ~1800 or so.

the cover of the very old book, depicting what looks like a scaled bull on the cover

“The Historie of Foure-Footed Beastes is a book from 1607 detailing mythical and legendary beings as described by one Edward Topsell, who appears to have believed he was writing about real animals he'd simply never seen before. Here he speaks of the "Lybian Beast" or "Gorgon,"a dreadful bull-like creature which feasts on poisonous herbs and so possesses a lethal breath.

Did Gygax read this book? We have no proof, though we have corroboration from another entry in The Historie which treats the lamia as a species of creature, half woman and half lion. Considering the mythological Lamia is an individual and a child-eating demoness by trade, the similarity of The Historie's version to the D&D interpretation cannot be overlooked. There's also the "Wilde Beast in the New found World called SU," a monkey-like critter reminiscent of another oddball and unique D&D creature.

Further corroboration comes from Jon Peterson's history Playing at the World: A History of Simulating Wars, People and Fantastic Adventures from Chess to Role-Playing Games, which also attributes the development of D&D's Gorgon to Topsell's work:

From Topsell, for example, Dungeons & Dragons inherits a gorgon that looks like a bull and petrifies with its breath, rather than the gorgons of the story of Perseus, of whom Medusa is the most famous. (Chapter 2.6, at p.154)

I've seen other references that use "African gorgon" to describe the catoblepas, which Topsell's book was referencing. Of course, the catoblepas is a separate creature in D&D — but then, it's more known for a lethal gaze than deadly breath. Thus, despite similar mythology informing both Topsell's "gorgon" and the D&D catoblepas, two distinctive monsters are produced.

What about the metallic hide? Well, for that, let's look at another mythical creature with which Gygax was likely familiar. The Colchis Bulls, or khalkotauroi, were mighty and terrible bronze bulls that could breathe fire. Overcoming them was a task with which Jason, of Argonauts fame, was charged. It may be that Gygax liked the myth but wanted to find a more accessible name than "khalkotauroi" and one less real-world-referencing than "Colchis Bulls," and inadvertently determined from various readings that Topsell's bull-monster with the killer breath and the other dangerous legendary bulls with ultra halitosis were references to the same creature. Thus was produced a thing with the best of both worlds - metallic hide, poisonous breath, and no unfortunate neck deficiency.

Needless to say this is all speculation, though it does look to sources that refer to the "gorgon" as a bovine creature.”

So now that we know who won the Game of Thrones and ended up sitting down...

Dragoth the Defiler on Throne. Just look at the strength of that undead overlord! Holding his sword casually in the air with his arm outstretched, Darth Vader-style!
This mini is from the second Bones kickstarter core set. I based it on a 50mm round lipped and put some black flock around it. Looks good!
This one can also do double duty as a Charnel Throne scenery item for my Age of Sigmar Flesh Eater Courts Army.
The sword simply would not stay glued to the skull I placed the tip at. That is the power of Bones plastic memory for you. I should have heat treated the thing to position it correctly before painting. Oh well. No matter.
Reaper makes a metal version of this that presumably predates the Bones 2 kickstarter, and that has a vampire's head instead of a skeleton's skull. I wonder why they changed it to a skull for the Bones version?

"Ah! We meet again! And I see your sword is as big as mine!"

The Whispering Tyrant from the second Bones kickstarter. This is an officially licensed Pathfinder miniature. So I guess it is some sort of evil adversary in some adventure or other in that game.
For me, this is Loki. I expect you see why. To make the model even more similar to the trickster god, I cut off the central helment-thing and carved the helmet round. Which took me whole tens of seconds! Bones material is really easy to cut and convert. I will miss this aspect with the Bones Black minis.
On this mini I have tried out some new colorshift paints from Green Stuff World and a flip paint (which is supposed to get the same effect) from Instar.
I probably did not do it right, as I don't think it has much of a colorshifting effect (there is a slight effect, though). The instructions say to use a gloss black undercoat and many, many thin layers to get the effect.
I did not do that. On a brown basecoat I used GSW Mystic Gold colorshift, and Instar Green Gold Flip, with GSW Tropical Green at the tips and edges. and I just glooped it on! Two or three thick coats of each paint is used here. So next time, maybe I should try actually following the instructions...
Anyhow, this model will make a good leader for my undead legions, or even a C'Tan for the Necrons.

      Tick, tock, tick, tock...

Werecrocodile. Yup, a werecrocodile. Presumably someone survived getting bitten by a croc and then turned the following full moon, tearing off all their clothes to waddle down to the river and burble at the moon?
So now we are just waiting for the WereDuckbilledPlatypus and WereMoose with baited breath. Maybe in Bones 5?
Thankfully this mini does not have any clothing, armour, weapons or other items about it's person. This can work as a monstrous beast of any kind. Even a Kaiju in a game of Epic.
This came from the third Bones kickstarter.

Labella DeMornay, Banshee from the first Bones kickstarter, This is a green translucent, and like all translucents I undercoated it first with Army Painter Anti Shine Matt Varnish, so the following washes would have something to adhere to. This is key to painting translucents. Also, make sure to use transparent paints, like inks and quickshade washes. Opaque paints will invariably ruin the translucent effect. The green tinge of the plastic will affect any transparent colours that are used, and so this must be taken into consideration. For her brown hair, I used Citadel Carroburg Crimson shade (a dark red). The skin is Citadel Casandora Yellow Shade, the dress is old Citadel Blue glaze (red flip-cap hex pot) and ditto Turquoise glaze. Taking care to draw off any pooling and to avoid unsightly tide marks by smoothing with a damp brush while wet. The aim is to tint the translucent plastic, not sp much paint over it, or even "shade" it. Not sure how pleased I am with the results here. I think the results could have been much better if the plastic was clear not green tinged.

Freja Fangbreaker. On the topic of female, form fitting armour, it turns out that the upper chest area of female dwarves is invulnerable to all kinds of piercing and slashing weapons, so it does not need any armour! Ain't it great? Presumably the prominent devils dumplings act as bumpers and the impressive cleavage does not at all act as a funnel for spears?
Seriously though, this is a first Bones KS model, made in the softer early Bonesium. And still it has rather good detail, only slightly shallow on the quilting on the back and on the lower right hand arm armour. Which goes to show that on larger figures that has deeper details (A dwarf counting as larger? Maybe I should say wider?) Bones is a good material.
