WhiteWulfe's Ritterlich

Recommended Posts

Finally sort of cleaned up my desk, so there's actually room to work again... Not quite enough room for hubby to work on his side yet, but we'll get there soon. ish. TM. ::P:

Tentatively calling them the "Fiendish Flying Foxes" or something to that effect, but not fully certain yet hence the title not being as... fluffy as they usually are for me.  Kind of want to sneak "fire" in there somewhere too (Fierce, Fiery, Flying Foxes sort of rolls off the tongue), but haven't quite figured that out just yet. :poke:  ...And yes, I like alliteration, for some strange reason. ^_^

Anyways!  Been slowly collecting various CAVs, and since the race I like the fluff of the most currently isn't really available (at least until September-ish, aka Malvernis in the 3rd kickstarter) I figured I'd start with a Ritterlich group!  While I do have the rulebook, I haven't really read it yet but it's on the to-do "eventually" list....  So I aimed to go with at least 2 of what I liked, and 4 of what I really liked.  Seems to work at least for basics out of the gate anyways...  Thanks to a package going missing for over two months (and being reshipped due to such), I wound up with a few more than originally planned in some areas ^_^;;;;

So, just what do the foxes have, at least so far?

Attack: 2x 72231 Cataphract, 4x 72050 Firedrake, 4x 72267 Rhino II, 4x 72283 Sabertooth, 4x 72273 Tiger, 2x 72278 Wolverine

Fire Support: 6x 72282 Cheetah, 2x 72230 Silverback, 2x 72201 Tiamat

Recon: 2x 72208 Cougar

Extras as why not: 6x 72284 Enforcer (came as freebies, so maybe spoils of war? :P)

Most are still in blister packs, but I do have five of them on the desk so far.....

^My first Cougar....  Who will also be the first, uhm... subject for my Vallejo terrain paste...

^Initial layout for the bases for my Cataphracts!

^My two Silverbacks, although I suspect more will see the table at some point because I apparently love missiles. ^_^

Why the 40mm circular bases?  Uhm, well...  It's partially because I prefer circular ones, partially because they're more stable on 40mm bases, and also because there's more room to do basing stuff with ^_^;;;;;;

Yah!  New CAV thread!  Hopefully seeing some getting paint on them will motivate me to get painting on my Terrans!

I figured with a box of goodies now being a tentative 5-6 months away, I might want to actually work on my current backlog.  That and they've been out of the packaging for a while, and I tidied up the desk to have room to work on various models...

...Okay, I'll admit it, I also figure having a WIP thread will coax me to do more work on them ^_^;;;;;  That and hey, it's big. stompy. ROBOTS.  (of doom)!

May or may not get paint on them tonight...  I say that because I keep being teased and tempted by several others on my table, some of which are fairly close to completion!

Just now, Corsair said:

Great start! Psst, the Cheetah is Fire Support. And it NEEDS that 40 mm base.

I listed it in the Attack portion as that's what it's described as on the web store - would make more sense in fire support, given that it's a bleep bleep bloop "I've lost the bleeps, the sweeps, and the creeps" kind of model (mmm, ECM), that's also anti-air for good measure.  Data card has this weird icon, so I honestly couldn't figure it out, nor could I find any info regarding what that icon meant in the rulebook either ^_^;;;;

Still trying to figure out what to do with SIX of them though *laughs nervously*  ...Not that I'd field all of them if I were to fight, but... Still.  Would make sense though that with the theme of these guys being "hit hard, hit fast, get what we came for and get out, then drink their liquor!" kind of mentality.  At least what I'm thinking anyways, since that seems like it would play well with all "fry their electronics and move move MOOOOVE" that they (Ritterlich) seem to be built around.

I'm just gonna say it like this...  Vallejo Terrain Paste feels like a miracle drug to me.  A miracle in a tub that easily spreads...  And of course makes a mess of everything else, but still!

^Cougar shows signs of being the first time using it, but at the same time...  A little bit of cleaning up, and I'm more than happy with it ^_^;;;

^Bases for the Silverbacks also magically disappeared under.... white goop of... Gets everywhere goopyness!

Oh right!  Can't forget the Cataphract bases....  Spoilered because... Well, they're pics, but I couldn't get them to show as well as I wanted to.

So...  Why the terrain paste?  I've been curious about a few things, and, in all honesty, wanted to be able to get some of the things in my head to the base a LOT faster...  Things like that Reaver of Kargir base took me a few hours, and didn't quite get the effect I wanted...  For all of these bases?  35 minutes...  And that's including FOUR other bases too getting the goop.

Alright, before I forget, I also started working on getting the pins ready for my Cataphracts, one's pinned and the other is about to be.  Hoping for assembly, and liner in the near future!

The Cheetah got changed on the play cards to FS. I love this mech, reminds me of what the old Rifleman from BattleTech could have been!

Ahhhh, good to know.

As for the Rifleman, I'd have to look that one up - for some reason, most mechs are drawing a blank (other than most of the "obvious" OmniMechs aaaand the Hunchback).

Wishing today was a day off, would have been nice to do more mini stuff instead of work ^_^

Cool!  I'd love to get a few mechs to paint :)

how big are those (the store doesn't have bryangles for CAV figures)..

Each one is a bit different, but I think they're around two inches or so.  When I get home from work I'll take some pictures with Sir Forscale to give a better idea :)

Got a touch distracted when I got home, and wound up doing a few other things before sitting down to take pictures (biggest one was, uh, uhm...  Drilling holes in the barrels... after i took the photos, of course, silly fox :huh:)

Compared against 77008 Garrick the Bold, aka Sir Forscale...

^Versus the Cougar.  Seems just a touch higher than Sir Forscale.

^Versus a Cataphract

^Versus a Silverback (with guided missiles dry-fitted to chassis)

Apologies for the angles not quite being dead-on, I was somewhat hasty with my setup (as can be seen by Sir Forscale having shifted in a few of the photos)

Minor progress update on things...  Working on clearing up a few other things so I have more room to work, but in the meantime....

^First cataphract fits on the base without issue...

^Second one...  I'm going to try that little technique they mentioned in one of the Video Podcast stream... thingies.  Okay, it's Gorilla Wood Glue, but still.  I'm going to have to add some treads along the bottom because, uhm, well...  The posing I kind of went for on this one has the bottoms actually visible...  So giant key holes for their original base kind of have to go poof.  And yup, I've kind of pilfered hubby's Citadel paint handle, since the basic one only handles up to a 40mm base, and that's kind of useless since most of his stuff is at minimum on a 60mm base.

Forgot to take pics, but second Cataphract is now more or less ready to have his feet sculpted... Had to go a second batch of glue as it sunk it a good amount while drying the first blobs - I'm thinking an air bubble was caught inside or something, unless that glue really does shrink that much. Hmm.

^First Silverback is ready to go... Would be hit up with grey liner, but kind of ran out and I'm passing out at the table, so figured it was wise to call it there....  He didn't get primed with liner today.  Next time, he definitely will!

^Oh look, missile racks and the second Silverback are now primed with grey liner...  Doing it this way to basically paint the really hard to reach areas while priming others, and then I'll glie the guided rockets on top, and continue painting.  I greatly prefer aseembling first, but I'm not leaving some areas as "just black" and want them "properly" painted ^_^

^Hey look, some tool bots snuck in too, with a cameo from the really messy part of my desk...

*laughs nervously* Been a while.  We'll go with RL's been rough.  Or more appropriately, staying in a good headspace.  But we're working on that. ^_^;;;

Anyways!  I have done some work since the last update, just not as much as I'd like to....  With September being a mere three months away, I figure I should probably get things rolling a bit more with these guys, doubly so with my desire to actually get a table going for CAV (as well as DropZone Commander and DropFleet Commander, because those seem interesting, AND conveniently are the same scale, so would use the same board and terrain....).  Really digging the idea of a board from Uncertain Scenery, paired with terrain from DarkZone, TTCombat, and mayyyybe Blotz.  I say maybe because shipping isn't cheap for Blotz's stuff if you live in North America (bundle pack G, for example, adds another 50 GBP onto something that's only 213 GBP...

^So...  Some units have been assembled at least...  Got a queue of more to come, but was getting tired and decided to definitely follow my own rule (no xacto usage when tired!)

^Another cougar is partially lined with grey liner (partially because I ran out while priming other things)

^Progress on the missiles for the Silverbacks.  I think my aim was to have them look sort of like those particular areas don't see too too much maintenance, doubly so the launch cover door thingies...  Hoping I can make the effect work out ^_^;;;;

So....  Been on vacation for the past week, but didn't get all that much in the way of miniatures stuff done...  Last week I told myself I'd clear the assembly backlog for these guys...

^So far, what's been done...  Yeah, includes some of the ones from the previous post but eh. ^_^

^And now we have most of the backlog.  Why most?  Five Six Enforcers aren't in this pic....  From left to right... 5x Cheetah, 4x Tiger, 3x Rhino II, 3x Sabertooth, and 4x Fire Drake.

More assembly will happen soon, just need to give my neck a bit of a break from cleaning so many mold lines...  That and pick up more superglue *whistles innocently* I appear to have mostly run out of the stuff o_O

      I had painted a flail as a test model, and then decided to do a group since it was an easy color scheme.
      had too many tags, but it's a pillager, wolverine, flail, outlaw, and poltergeist

      So I finally fell into the temptation and got my first ground based sci fi minis!(I do have spaceships.)
      A Cataphract, conquerer , and a halberd by Reaper minis came in with my horsman today! Sadly the halberd is missing a piece so it may in end up being returned.
      So my first order of business was a small conversion to the cataphract
      Before conversion

      And the conquerer has donated the necessary parts for said conversion, specifically his smaller missile pods.

      A bit of work with an exacto knife removed said weapons.

      And a bit more exacto work to make a spot for the pods on the Cataphract.

      Some super glue to assemble the cataphract and voila! It is time for paint!

      And don’t worry about the Conquerer, I have a conversion in mind for it too. It just might not be a true mech when I’m done.......

      More sci-fi stuff to come soon I hope!
      And maybe just maybe I’ll try to make a backstory for these guys.
      Thankyou for looking!

      Hey look, yet another Jasper topic.....
      But this one is different (I hope).  I actually have a time frame in mind, to get this finished before the end of 2020, and submitted for the annual diorama contest.
      I love dioramas, and I've been pretty happy with the few I've made. BUT I always put off getting started and then end up rushing over Christmas to get everything done.
      So this year I'm starting in January (if just barely) so that I will hopefully get some stuff done before December.
      I've had the idea for this diorama since the very first moment I saw my first "sneak preview" of Khanjira (that would have been approximately Fri, Oct 25, 2013, 7:57 PM ADT, according to when I got the email from Kickstarter).
      My first though was something like "What a beast! Imagine if he was fighting something from a smaller scale, like CAV...."
      So that has been bouncing around in my head ever since.
      Then I was messaging with @Pochi a few weeks ago about the contests and got talking about dioramas, and I mentioned this idea, and she said I HAD to do it.....so here we are.
      Basic concept is the classic Kaiju attacking a future city harbour. CAVs (any or all of tanks, vehicles, mechs, infantry, maybe even aircraft) defending. (I briefly considered going even smaller scale as I have quite a bit of 6mm stuff too, but CAVs are easier to work with,  I have about a billion of them, and they are awesome).
      Today was a beginning.  I grabbed some stuff and laid it out just to get an idea of a size I'm going to want.

      Obviously I just grabbed what was handy to get some scale. Khanjira is represented by my 7 days Khanjira (handy, that ). I plan to try to get him a little more upright, since he won't be on his base and at least his front foot will be "under water". With his pose (which I don't think I have the skill or know how to adjust too much) I'm thinking maybe an elevated highway that he has just crushed to be what his right leg is on.  That or a boat of some sort....we'll see.
      The box is just a reference for the land, glasses are just some buildings.  I'm picturing something similar to the Halifax waterfront with boardwalks or something and docks/jetties (the grey upside down drawer represents) and then big buildings. Army will be in place along the waterfront, so some barricades and stuff. Possibly a trench of energy blasted ruin from the "breath weapon" if I think I can pull that off.  Again, we'll see.
      So just from the mock up, this is going to be fairly massive...like approaching 2 foot kind of dimensions
      Not something I would do if I was following advice on building award winning dioramas, but then that's not what I'm focusing on.  I just want to make the image in my mind a reality, and I'm using the contest deadline to hopefully focus me.
      I'm also going to have to learn to do a bunch of new stuff for this, which should be fun!
      Step one will be to dig out my other Khanjira and start cleaning up up.  And decide on what I'm going to use for a base for this thing.....

      Olive Green
      Dark Brown
      Oily Steel,
      Testors paints,
      Gi. Red
      Flat steel
      Model Masters paints,
      Gun Metal,
      Burnt Iron
      Other colors

      Yes, a 2020 ReaperCon WIP! And a massive undertaking at that. I'm trying very hard not to nerd out and put this whole project into, er, Project. There's just so many pieces to keep track of, that maybe I'll just use this first post to keep track of things.
      Some background stuff, starting with a quote from the "Paint a giant robot! Group WIP" where I wrote some of what's planned:
      You can read the rest of that post here: Paint a giant robot post and a second one to see where I'm going with this: PLA print post in same topic
      Biggest takeaway is that, while useful, my PLA printer can only do so much. I have a resin printer backed on Kickstarter, but considering it's now 3 years late, I don't think I should hold my breath on it ever showing up. Especially when I can get a new Elegoo Mars resin printer with more capability for relatively cheap (<$300). The PLA machine was bought with both hobby and household goals in mind, and it's served well. But the resolution just ain't there! More on that down the posts.
      I also had the chance to gain some experience on  paper plants at ReaperCon (Main post for that in the Terrain section post here: Vellum Paper Plants - Alien Jungle (WIP)
      Basically, I have the scrap booking machine to make my own alien plants:
      Which now leads me to this WIP. This is going to tie all those pieces together. The robot WIP will still be to get a good camo scheme, but that print job is not going to be used for the final diorama. Instead, that will be the resin printer's job. So, let's break down the WIP work that I can see so far, and will be edited later to add things and mark completions.
      Tasks to be completed:
      Figures Needed
      Wight (being pulled down backwards, caught by hidden lines) Gremlin Unit 01 (stole a supply crate and ran; actually just bait to get the larger CAV to follow) Gremlin Units 02 and 03 (trip line pair, successfully snagging Wight across the chest) Gremlin Units 04 and 05 (trip line pair, successful across another part of the chest) Gremlin Unit 06 (burner unit, cut Wight's left gun in two) Gremlin Units 07 and 08 (trap door unit, hiding entrance to jungle path with camo doors strapped to them) Gremlin Units 09 and 10 (trip line pair, successful across right thigh) Gremlin Units 11 and 12 (trip line pair, broken cable across chest, possibly falling over from sudden jolt) Gremlin Unit 13 (ECM unit, some large radar dish looking thing) Gremlin Units 14, 15 and 16 (cargo units, loaded up with stolen supplies and headed out) Gremlin Units 17, 18, 19, and 20 (gun units) Gremlin Units 21, 22, and 23 (missile units) Gremlin Unit 24 (large gun unit) Gremlin Unit 25 and 26 (junked units; scavenged for parts?) Gremlin Unit 27 (2nd style missile unit) Gremlin Unit 28 (personnel carrier unit)
      Wight Conversion
      Right Leg: cut from pelvis; reposition Feet: cut off both feet and swap positions since the tread is only on one foot Base: cut away from right foot, possibly keeping full base around left foot Left arm (maybe): cut gun into two pieces, having one falling to the ground after being cut by a heat lance/chainsaw rope
      Details to be included
      Camo doors at front leaving marks on the dirt path, but hiding the ambush from the main trail Pieces of old broken larger CAV units around Wight gun cut in two, maybe showing inner details. May have to 3D print an add-on piece Dust being kicked up by the stolen crate (going to try using dyed cotton) IN WORK One cable snapping dynamically, with several bends and twists (superglue on thread?) Multiple vehicle tracks around camp Campfire and tents for people A latrine Other camp details (laundry, chairs, sports equipment, bored carvings, etc)
      Jungle Plants (V=Vellum cuts, B=bought, S=Sculpted, F=Found, P=Printed)
      Large lotus flower like plants, but dry land and maybe odd colors with a large conifer cone growing from the middle (V) Jester hat plant (balls on stems around a central point) (V) COMPLETED Spiky yucca like plant (V) Jagged leaf plant (V) Tentacle plant (V) Tripod trees (three spoke trunks) (V) Large palm fronds (S) Coral like trees (P) Horn tree (lots of horn shaped leaves from a central trunk) (P, V) Ball vine (like ivy but with odd leaf shapes) (V) Cabbage-like jungle plants with large wrinkled leaves (V) Fuzzy vines (thin wire coated with static grass) (S) Anything I can buy from N/HO scale train setups and painted alien-ish (B) Reaper figures that can be clipped and painted to be plants (B) Odd trees with strange leaf shapes (onion shaped) (V) IN WORK Random grass-like jungle plants (V) IN WORK Stem ends from mandarin oranges (seriously, pull one off and look at it, stem towards the ground) (F) Anything and everything else (VBSFP)
      Base mounting system
      Design and print modular tiles with bristles on top (basically, Bristle Block toys) Allows mounting of all the above jungle plants Fill in around plants with thinned plaster via a syringe to create the ground surfaces
