Warlord Games General Historical Discussion

What was the issue with the Warlord Pz IV Exhaust? I went & looked at the pictures & the exhaust looks pretty typical for this tank. The bigger issue seems to be that, like a lot of historical models, it doesn't build into a quite accurate model of anything (the PSC Pz IVs in 15mm suffer from the same issue). The F version lacks the smoke  grenade mount on the hull rear, & the H version still has the split commander's hatch (one-piece hatches were incorporated in the late-G models), the turret would need to remove the side visors & the auxiliary turret face visor in order to make an accurate G or H, etc. I don't know if the instructions specify these differences, but usually wargamers just don't care enough about those details.

...cut...

Damon.

Sorry, I said exhaust and it’s not. It’s a double barrel filter system on the right side. Which I think only appeared on the ones produced by Vomag (Filzbach air filters) of which I think a dozen were sent to Spain.

Oh yeah, the painting discussion. Wait a second ... wait a second ...

Here it comes:

image.png.705aeea5f89333fb4867ac44aa07b5fd.png

They banned me from a German wargaming forum for being a heretic and painting my STUG in GRAY. And the reason for that is: I wanted to paint it in gray.

And every time I feel like I have to paint a tank in a color that suits my liking, I will do that again. I mean, in the end it is a game.

Absolutely!

And as for historical accuray...at the end phase of the war there was a shortage of everything, including paint.

So some vehicles didn't get a paint upgrade.

Anyway, this is a hobby and one should have fun with it.

I have the newish Warlord Games British Airborne box. The weapon mix is frustrating to say the least. First issue is that a full strength Airborne section has 11 men in it. There are only thirty men in the box on five identical sprues. I need a total of 22 Enfields, there are 20 available. I need 7 Stens, there are 20 available.  I need 4 Bren guns, there are 5 available (whew).  Four the three regular sections the 5 Piats and 5 scoped rifles are extra as they are only found in the command section. To fill out an entire platoon for Chain of Command I need two boxes at which point I will have way more than I need. Oh, not to mention 5 Hunting Horns.

Fortunately I started this platoon a number of years ago so the plastics just become filler troops to flesh out what I have. Still have to do the 2” mortar in metal though, none of those on the plastic spruce. As with the German boxes it would just be nice if they did a special separate weapon spruce for the least needed weapons which could then include the ones you only need one of like mortars, scoped rifles and piats. On the plus side I will now have plenty of extra special weapon troops for extra support elements.

One positive though is that a lot of the weapons and arms are one piece; so left arm, right arm and weapon as a single assembly. Makes life much easier.

One possibility is that you get yourself a weapons plastic sprue. This can help you get the weapons you need for your game. The "problem" is that Bolt Action is not "historically accurate" (but then again, what game really is?), so you will not find the same setup of troops as you find it in Chain of Commands. It's more a kind of arcade, like W40k. I mean, you can create Stg 44 Troops for Germany, that wipe out entire platoons - which was not the fact in reality.

So, it's pretty common you will find different load outs in Warlord Games sprues than those which would have been realistic.

Bolt Action is the 40K of World War II, Jervis and Paul made sure of that! Hence why Chain of Command, and it’s patrol phase, is my rule set of choice for WWII

A weapon sprue would be great but that would cut into their metal sales I’m sure.

With the plastic boxes, I've come to realize that in (seemingly) all cases it's two boxes for one full platoon, or three boxes for two full platoons.  If you're not short weapons, you'll be short bodies (the British Infantry set has a weapons sprue, but five less bodies).  Whether this is because of the limitations of making a box set within an acceptable price point, or is by design to encourage sales, I can't say.  To give Warlord the benefit of the doubt, they do make a point of noting that, at least for Bolt Action, in most cases you are expected to field understrength platoons within the recommended point totals.  So if you're playing as designed then, at least theoretically, you don't have to spend more money.

For those of us who want full strength platoons, it's a pain in the butt.  But, overall, the price per figure ratio is pretty good.  Certainly it's much better than, say, Robotech RPG Tactics (at retail anyway, not hard to find those at a steep discount now that it's a dead game).

Well, Mario of Frontline Games will pick up a few sales from me at Reapercon as I fill out what I need.  He's a good guy, I don't mind giving him some extra business.  In building my forces I think I'll be going for the 3 boxes = 2 platoons route, since I would like to at least have the theoretical option of a game with 2 players per side or larger forces for 1 v 1.

Well, checking at the website, I found a British airborne plastic sprue, including weapons, equipment and 5-6 miniatures. I mean, that would make a nice addition and provide you with the equipment you need - and maybe a few more miniatures in case you need them.

Agreed, but since these are already filler troops for my existing metal I’m in good shape. For something approaching a full platoon you could buy a box and two sprues and then the only thing you would be short is the 2” mortar. Probably easier to just buy two boxes though.

There is the basic british infantry weapon sprue, has the 2" mortar... extra piat, stens, some enfields, tommy guns, bren, wembley revolver.  It's less costly than a full infantry sprue, so if you had the bodies but just needed some rifles and the mortar it might do the trick.

That would work. The 2” mortar seems to be the key weapon missing from the airborne box.
