Planet of the Apes The miniatures Boardgame

It unfunded yesterday, and continues bleeding backers. A damn shame because I would have loved to get those minis.

Hopefully they'll listen to the constructive comments, cancel now and return in September with a better structured and realistic campaign.

And I hope they won't lose the license in the mean time.

$65 for 2 trees? That means the three trees in the WAR box would amount to $90 of the total $110 cost. So a whole game without the trees for $20?

Exactly.  Between that and the wonky pledge level costs -- if you can't do basic math then why would I give you money?

Isn't that only in the last 24 or 48hrs?

Its during the last 24hrs that you cant cancel if it results in the project unfunding.

I hope they do cancel and re-launch, they are down $12k and the franchise deserves better

Fox is also the licensor.

Although I won't fund a Prodos / Archon KS, Prodos repeatedly blamed Fox for delaying their AvP project, causing cost overruns. A project should take its licensor into account, but I'm not that much of a fan to take the risk of this First Created project.

Mebbe the creators should just run a KS for the trees!

Cynically speaking, Disney is so much more into maintaining that image of being squeaky clean they'll probably try harder to avoid (apparent) licensing messes like the Prodoss AvP one. Not so sure that'll actually affect the Fox films franchises all that much all that soon, though.

I wonder if the recent Disney takeover of Fox could affect the licencing agreement.

That was asked in the comments 2-3 days after launching and apparently WYSIWYG says everything is fine with the agreement they have.

If anything it should improve matters since Disney seems to be very on the ball in terms of getting their merchandise & licenced stuff releases swiftly to capitalise on the shows and movies, Fox was reputedly prone to be slow to make decisions (or more probably the appropriate people were slow to look at stuff in the first place)

Well, maybe- but probably not.

While Fox was acquired by Disney, they didn't just fire everyone who worked at Fox.  Square-Enix actually stated that the reason that Star Wars and Marvel properties weren't included in the newest Kingdom Hearts game was because the studios licence their properties separately- making it a LOT more complicated.  I suspect the same will be true of the Fox properties.

So the reasons that Fox was difficult to work with will probably continue for a while.

Back on topic:

WHAT THE HELL?  Why is this Kickstarter defunding so bad?

I haven't seen the numbers drop like this since Overturn Rising Sands.  Does Planet of the Apes look like  a scam?  Or is it just that their pricing scheme makes no sense (Sure, I'd buy an extra box instead of picking up trees separately).

I'd guess:

  • Speculative Earlybird lock-ins opting out, and
  • The campaign announced a reboot

Hopefully they'll get an opportunity to make those trees (and tree-bridges) at an affordable price in the future. Seriously: just selling trees (from a single mold) could make them a mint.

Yeah, but the Reboot was announced after ten days of negative funding numbers.  It had to be something else that turned it around.

I was looking at the updates around where the peak was.  There was one on April 15th where they posted nothing except a link to a website that was under construction.  Then, on the 16th, they posted up their rules (the rulebook doesn't look professional or finished just yet).

Is that enough to turn around a campaign that's doing well?

Currently, backers are talking about whether or not it is "safe" to leave your pledge.  Some are concerned that WYSIWYGames will pledge another forty grand so that they can collect the pledged funds and run off into the sunset.  I think those fears are pretty unfounded, unless we have other evidence of shenanigans.

I think the funding started dropping when the English rules WIP were shown.

Also, some people who played the game demos didn't like the game system. BGG's only review of the game was negative.

Interesting that on BGG, nobody's posted about the game for *days*. Compare this with CMON's Bloodborne.

Mebbe the IP's too old. I remember another old IP (Pacific Rim??) KS failing.

Ask this question on BGG for more thoughts!

In my opinion:

The real question is why it funded in the first place.  Ironically called "WYSIWYGames" when all they were offering were a series of images of game boxes and components without any game substance behind it.

People pledged because the images on the page looked slick, professional and enticing at first glance, and then people realized there was no substance to back up the images.

And people are dropping their pledges because the [...] who are running this dead project haven't done the intelligent, sensible (and expected) thing are cancelled it (do they even know they can?  Do they know how Kickstarter works?), which is making even their dedicated supporters go ??? and drop their pledges.

The poor communications and behaviour of the project creators during this have been baffling and this last gesture should put the nail in the coffin for anyone thinking of ever giving them money.

I think price is one thing. It's not the plastic fest that you get from a lot of other campaigns. While it's not quite the value of other games, I don't think the base game itself is too overpriced (it is a little, though). The trees add-on seems to be, though. I'm not sure why two more trees would cost that much.

The War game at least had a BoW playthrough video, so I wouldn't say there's no substance behind it, but they need to have a workable version of the rulebook if/when they relaunch. The Origins game, on the other hand, was concerning a lot of people because of the lack of information. I think that's where you might be correct in saying that people were pulled in by what they saw and then found nothing behind it.

In the beginning they were actually very communicative, and reacted pretty quickly to correct some errors on the page, and they did at least try to add some more value to the trees box by adding the bridges to it (although it was still overpriced with those). The communication definitely went downhill when things started to go sideways, though.

I'm not sure why they haven't cancelled it, and that part is concerning. In their statement they said they're in contact with other game professionals. I know Leo from Mythic wrote a very positive review on his fb page before the campaign launched (and they also shared this in an update), so possibly Mythic or Monolith might get involved, since they're French (complete and unfounded speculation on my part)?

If they actually work on the bullet points they listed out in their last update and partner up with someone with more KS experience I could see them potentially being able to successfully re-launch it, but who knows?

      About
"The Mrs. had followed her grandmother's gingerbread cookie recipe exactly as she had been taught as a child, however, she was extra cautious not to add too much pixie dust and rum to the bowl of ingredients this time.
Amid the dry heat of her convection oven the gingerbread dough began to blend with the magical components, and everything was slowly activated by the steady warmth of the preheated oven.
When the leavening agents and other alchemical ingredients puffed out the enchanted dough, The Gingerbread Gang began to magically come to life, and the kitchen was suddenly filled with the scent of cinnamon, nutmeg, and something else I didn’t quite recognize."

Painted & photographed by Shoshie   "Well...whilst she mixed the dry ingredients together...she occasionally muttered something to herself, which I couldn't understand. And amid quite a bit of chuckling, I overheard The Mrs. softly sing some sort of ditty about "Sugar, and spice, and things not quite nice.".
I think she may have had a nip, or three, of rum."

Hello guys, gals, and non-binary pals,
Thank you for making the previous War in Christmas Village Kickstarters a success, and welcome back to another crowdfunding venture!
We are seeking funds to create our newest batch of tabletop holiday gaming miniatures, as well as, create a packaged war band set of our two most popular snowmen minis, per our backer community request.
War in Christmas Village tabletop gaming miniatures are perfectly scaled for most popular tabletop role playing games, miniatures war games, railroad hobbyists, Christmas Village displays, and other holiday dioramas.
War in Christmas Village tabletop minis are highly detailed, mold injected PVC, arrive unpainted, and are scaled 28mm boot to eye.
But, don't take our word for it check out some of the reviews of our prior War in Christmas Village tabletop miniatures releases :)

Hello all - Chroniclers of Barbaric Splendor is now live. It features licensed miniatures from creators of swords and sorcery such as David C. Smith (Oron, Red Sonja, Bran Mak Morn) and Howie Bentley (The Snake-Man's Bane).

It is perfectly reasonable that this will come up, so I wanted to post this here as well:

It is no secret my first campaign was delayed, although fulfilled. Part of that was poor planning and expectations, and part was health issues that exacerbated each other and financial issues that arose from that. All such issues are in the past, and I am proud that I overcame them to fulfill what I feel was an amazing Kickstarter with amazing miniatures. Since then I have been operating Barbaric Splendor Miniatures and have been delivering excellent service and product. I have learned also from others in the industry and feel confident I am offering a well-thought out campaign that will be a success for all of us! 5 of the miniatures have already been sculpted, and sculptors lined up for the rest, including add-ons and stretch goals. Dark Platypus studio will be doing the casting - from previous experience I can attest to both the quality and timeliness of their work. Thus, the only risks would be possible delays in sculptor schedules for stretch goals and the fact that I will be doing all the packing and shipping myself when not working my regular job could lead to slower times getting things out if the campaign is wildly successful. I understand that some will be displeased with the delays of the first campaign, but I feel I have proven myself over the past year with Barbaric Splendor Miniatures, and I look forward to bringing more great Swords and Sorcery miniatures to you!

Made from injection moulded PVC we were incredibly happy with the quality of our previous models, the factory we worked with were very efficient allowing us to start to fulfil our Kickstarter a full two months early.
We worked hard to have our sculpts in place meaning as soon as we are successful we can spring into action and instruct the factory to start the process.
