Question for:

May 31st ~ When was the last time you went out and spent the day in the woods/desert/shoreline/swamp/etc. ?

Where did you go and was there anything that you saw that you found impressive??

It's been quite a while, sadly. The closet I've come would be a few weeks ago, when I went to visit my mom. She lives in the middle of the woods on a dirt road in Vermont. So, I wasn't necessarily in nature, but I was surrounded by it.

The impressive thing about that trip was I changed elevation enough (in a little over an hour) that the temperature dropped from the 50s to cold enough for snow, which it did.

It will make chocolates, lollipops, fruit tarts, and taffy.

I must be tired because I read "fruit tarts" as "truth farts" and immediately went "what the heck???" Then my brain processor caught up. Hoo boy...

We went out to a nature reserve and made a day of it a few weeks ago. I'm not much of an urbanite, so I try to escape the crowds as much as possible. The reserve isn't the biggest, but you can easily reach other little nature havens by following the paths down by the river.

Highlights of the day was seeing all the returning migrant birds and butterflies, several bloods of ducklings, a peregrine falcon, a pair of kingfishers and an otter. We watched the otter fish for about twenty minutes. He knew exactly where we were but as long as we were quiet he wasn't too bothered.

I'd also like to give a big thank you to @TGP for all the interesting questions this month :winkthumbs:

I play a Griffin on the Internet because in real life I am such a city slicker...

Woods= ~13 years ago

Desert= ~43 years ago

Shoreline= ~49 years ago

Mountains= ~43 years ago

Swamp= ~?? looks like never

So 13-ish years ago..,

...I visited my brother who lives on 11 acres about half of which is woods. The most impressive thing there is the Maple Tree. If it could go on the Internet it would play an Ent. Because it is about 100 feet tall and the trunk is about six feet thick at base. It is a MAPLE TREE.

This is not a picture of the tree or any of its friends.

This is not my brother’s place either

Believe it or not, the second picture is my backyard, the first picture is a spot about twelve blocks from my house. The blurry yellow patch in that one is a street sign (the kind that says No Outlet). :upside:  I got lost looking for a shortcut.

GTKY threads are in good shape, there are about 35-40 spare questions available in the pool (about half of those were contributed by @Thoramel ) @Glitterwolf takes over for the month of June (and has his questions all set) and there are volunteers scheduled through November!

Shoreline was at the end of March. We spent a week in Mexico mostly on the beach. Most impressive thing we saw were two highly plasticized, heavily operated on girls that thought they were hot. We'd never been near anyone who'd had that much surgery done before and it looked like it was done cheaply. Made me sad that anyone would want to spend money to look like that. Woods and swamp will be soon because it's fencing time. We don't have much of either but those spots take more fixing than the rest most years. Done sitting on the tractor most of the day until the end of June so now it's time to do lots of other things outside.

I spent a week in May in Costa Rica. It was beautiful and impressively clean and unspoiled by commercialism. This was the view at breakfast.

We went river rafting and saw many birds, monkeys, sloth and lizards.

Last time I did something of the kind was about a year ago when I moved to another province. I took some extra days off for sightseeing and went to Gros Morne national park on the west coast of Newfoundland.

High hills, sheer cliffs, very windy coast land, fjords. Beautiful place. For three years I flew over that park for my remote mine site in Labrador. So I was familiar with the top of the plateaus, but never at ground level.

      Welcome to Getting to Know You, December 2018 Edition.

      The rules as they currently stand:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question.
      1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one...
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
      2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted between 8:00 hours and 13:00 hours GMT (UK / Europe Time: some Zero Dark Thirty hour for US time zones)
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to me... (Or Talespinner, he started it.)
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions will usually take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.

      December will begin ^ with such a question because the month begins on a Saturday.
