Question for:

May 3rd: What is your favorite aircraft design from WW2 ?

Sooooo many.  P51 mustang or F4U Corsair are both contenders, but I have to go with the B17 flying fortress.  I tend to prefer the F variant because who doesn't love Memphis Belle and I always thought the chin turret on the G looked like it was trying too hard.

Depends on the role: a good interceptor makes a lousy escort fighter; a good bomber makes a lousy close-attack airplane. Carrier aircraft have constraints that ground-based aircraft don't have. I can give you pretty good arguments in any of those categories.

But I'll go a different direction: DC-3/C-47/R4D. A pretty airplane that served with stellar results in every theater and without which victory would have been nearly impossible.

Everyone always forgets about the logistics, don't they?

Without a doubt, the Supermarine Spitfire. I've been lucky enough to see one do a flyby and it was glorious ^_^

What she said. Lot of great planes out there but this is my favourite. Second place would be too hard to choose, P-38, mosquito, mustang. P-47, Lancaster, Sturmovik, maybe others.

I'm a fan of the P-38, absolutely. It's a beautiful plane. And I really like the specialization and appearance of the Junkers JU-87 Stuka.

But let's not forget some lesser-known contenders, since the question said "aircraft" and not "airplane."

The late-war rescue/resupply/general-carry-stuff workhorse, the Sikorsky R-4:

I've always been partial to the experimental rocket/jet power aircraft they were designing by the end of the war like the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet interceptor.

Very high speed, very poor range (7.5 minutes worth of fuel). They felt like literal secret weapons.

Soo .. from an old fascination with soft-material airplanes, I'm going to name the P-38 Lightning as my favorite.

I'm not even sure you can get those old kits anymore, but I used to love them, and I flew a number of them to their untimely ends.

I have a few honourable mentions (I think those kits did include a Spitfire of some kind), but that's still my fav.

The ones that flew.

My grandfather worked on several ships in and the decade after WW2, including a couple of these newfangled 'aircraft carriers'. He'd tell stories when we were kids about watching the planes launch off the carrier deck. Put the plane in the slingshot, prime the engine, let it go, and wait.

Every time the plane sort of fell off the side of the carrier. The deck lost line of sight to every plane on takeoff. Only some of them came back up. The rest... Nobody ever looked over the side when the plane never came back up. There was nothing left to see.

Welcome to Getting to Know You, December 2018 Edition.

The rules as they currently stand:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question.
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one...
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted between 8:00 hours and 13:00 hours GMT (UK / Europe Time: some Zero Dark Thirty hour for US time zones)
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to me... (Or Talespinner, he started it.)
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions will usually take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.

December will begin ^ with such a question because the month begins on a Saturday.
