If it was an afternoon project, that sounds like it may have been the initial setup? I don't have their sets but I'm sure it takes a while to punch the sheets and glue together the items that are generally recommended to be permanently assembled. Plus, the sewer/dungeon sets relied on the older system with multi-part angled walls, which I'm guessing take longer to assemble than the newer sets with flat walls.

The new system goes together reasonably fast, I'd guess much faster than the old stuff based on looks. As far a quality goes, everything is good for the most part.  The one real quality issue is the notches where the connectors go aren't always the right size. Most work fine, but you do have to recut some of them yourself. This is a known issue that has existed across multiple projects and was addressed by posting a video on how to recut the notches that are too small, so I'd expect it to still be an issue this time. Another thing I noticed on the Core Space punch boards was some "straight lines" that were a bit wavy. Nothing to the point of actually being a problem. I probably wouldn't notice while playing, but did see it on a number of things while punching stuff out. It was likely the cutting dies were used too many times before getting replaced and got a little warped.

What is the history / ins and outs of the use of Battlesystem as a brand and trademark in the tabletop gaming field?

 

 

I’m not fussed/upset about it; just genuinely curious.

I’ve been curious about this too. 

The books pictured above are still available as print on demand from Drive Thru RPG who lists the publisher as Wizards of the Coast, so one would think there’d still be some kind of trademark or copyright in effect regarding the name. Wizards and Hasbro are rather fussy about things like that. They were originally TSR products that Wizards acquired when they bought out TSR, and then later Wizards was acquired by Hasbro.

 

The only difference I could find is that one company uses the name Battlesystem and the other Battle Systems.

Doesnt seem like a big enough difference to prevent confusion.

 

And Battle Systems doesn’t just promote themselves as a terrain maker.

Their logo on their homepage clearly states they are a tabletop game and terrain maker. 

I would’ve thought that’s clearly encroaching on Battlesystems territory.

Couple other differences I see that could make a difference:

One is a product name, the other appears to be a company name. 

One is US based, the other is UK based. 

One is 20+ yrs old, the other is fairly recent

It's entirely possible that Hasbro didn't do enough to maintain the trademark in the UK, or that they're limited in how they can apply it.  

Or it's that they didn't notice (yet).

Ooh, I love when my professional and hobby worlds collide!  Just searched for both marks in the US and UK.

 

*takes deep breath, adjusts nerd glasses*

 

TSR owned two US trademark registrations for BATTLESYSTEM (US 1900335 for miniature figurines made of common metal and US 1777993 for fantasy role-playing games for playing tabletop battles with miniature figurines, and game accessories; namely, booklets containing role-playing game scenarios.)

 

Both marks were transferred to Wizards of the Coast in the early aughts, and both were cancelled soon after because they didn't file the required maintenance documents that are due within 6 years of the registration date. The US requires trademark owners to show they're using a trademark in order to maintain it. I'd guess either WotC wasn't selling that line in 2001ish and therefore couldn't maintain the registrations, or they just wanted to save money.  (They probably inherited dozens/hundreds of trademarks from TSR).

 

It doesn't look like TSR filed a trademark for BATTLESYSTEM in the UK.

 

Battle Systems (the terrain guys) have a UK trademark registration for BATTLE SYSTEMS (UK00003020613 for Board games; games scenery; games miniature figures; miniature games accessories; war-games miniature figures; war-games miniature scenery and terrain; toy soldiers; table top games; toy playthings.)

I had to pay an extra $75 when my package arrived from the first fantasy kickstarter, half the cost of my pledge. Shipped from DHL or something, not Canada friendly at all that's why I didn't get in this one, although I love their stuff, it's just not worth the price imho.
