Rigel sculpts a Plug-Ugly Pulp Crook

Recommended Posts

You know the type. The broken-nosed, bull-necked bruiser with the flat cap and the domino mask. The muscle of the organization. The hapless mook, the fall guy, the two-bit legbreaker. The guy who steals Cookie Crisp or clumsily follows the orders of a big-hatted mob boss in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. The [wanted-] poster-boy for dimwitted recidivism. In short, this guy:

I want him to have big, ape-like arms and short legs, to emphasize the cartoonishness of the villainy. Bigger than a normal dude (Plague Zombie for scale).

Started putting some Green Stuff on to his enormous torso:

Eventually he'll have a crowbar and a sack of smash-and-grabbed loot, but baby steps first. C&C welcome, because I can't stress enough how little I know what I'm doing. :-)

Got a round-headed sewing pin and started on the head yesterday, started on the mask and cap today.

Slapped some more fat and muscle onto the torso.

Here he is with Crosswire and a space mercenary hero for scale.

More progress on this guy! I suppose we might as well call him Puddin' Tame for the time being. Gave him a too-short shirt hem and a belt and got the legs mostly done.
I sculpt pants like everyone else: one leg at a time.DSCN6330.thumb.JPG.c62c47fe839387ca61d397c349673e5d.JPGDSCN6331.thumb.JPG.c2eed2c1a3839e49e90d089a26fe344b.JPGDSCN6336.thumb.JPG.e5c5508feaf70ef299dfab59d485aadf.JPGDSCN6337.thumb.JPG.8c079193f9dc0f896cdb11ac4c709f9a.JPGDSCN6338.thumb.JPG.49e38734e14858c877f6a491d89f75c3.JPGDSCN6339.thumb.JPG.9bc54b4477b235d6ffc5e0f5688c51be.JPG

And here's a sneak preview of head+body:

Slow progress is still progress! Got an arm done (the one that will be holding a sack) and most of his back. Put a sleeve on the finished arm, too.

Been taking some pointers from other burly-shouldered miniatures.

Think I'll finish the left hand and sack before working on his crowbar arm and putting his head on.We're getting close to scalpel time though, if you have tips, criticisms, or pointers!

I think he's pretty dang close to done! Realized I had a leftover left hand with a crowbar from the Luchador El Diabloooooo in my bits box, so there was a change of plans. Sack in the right hand, crowbar in the left.
Here's his other arm and sleeve,

and the stick-on bits.
DSCN6475.thumb.JPG.953f75825f32c4a931143b607b1299e2.JPG

Tried a couple of different positions, had to add some putty on so the hands look gloved. DSCN6483.thumb.JPG.c79591f2982f77d53fb5ea40ca748ca6.JPGDSCN6484.thumb.JPG.b6e6294e6de89a25a9c141d9a40cd2b9.JPG

Here's a size comparison with Herq and Stieg:

And here's the turnaround after the hands were finalized and the shoes got an upgrade. Note, I almost forgot to give his shirt a neckhole!  I think I may need to bulk up that crowbar hand; he's a ham-fisted type and that fist isn't quite ham-like enough yet. What else should I do or improve? Liquid green stuff on the back, to smooth out that fingerprinted area and some divots. What else needs smoothing or defining?

Looking good! Actually, if he had Herc's mustache, he would look like me....unfortunately....

This is awesome! He's got so much character. You did a great job on tricky things like muscles and clothing wrinkles. I do think you're right, the left hand doesn't seem to fit the rest of his bulkiness. I would also add some extra clay to the bottom of the money bag. From behind it looks properly weighted with loot but from the side and front it's lacking some volume.

Overall you did a great job, he looks like a super fun character to have in a game!

Looks great, hah. Awesome character and personality, high str low int mugger!

Are you gonna make a mold and try & sell it to reaper or making for yourself and heading off to paint next?

Thanks! Nailed it on the stats. Pretty good Cha though, if I may flatter myself!

I primarily made it for myself and haven't the first clue on mold-making or selling designs, but I'm honored you'd think it good enough to copy and would certainly love to see Reaper make something like it.

Thank you so much, and you know from sculpting! He's getting some paint already, but nothing that can't be scraped off for green stuff addition. Good call on the loot sack; I also noticed it's not quite hanging as gravity would pull it. I tried bulking the hand up with Liquid Green Stuff but will have to add more of the regular stuff.
The burly muscles were plenty of fun. I used to teach anatomy labs many years ago, so that's where credit is due (though it does make the screwups that much more shameful.)
I'm pretty stoked to get this great oik on the ''Call of Cthulhu' table. Can't wait to do the Muggsy voice.
