Question June 12th.

Have you ever given someone a painted mini as a gift and how was it received?

BONUS - show us pics of said mini.

I've sent off a few as part of exchanges here, and I know at least one was appreciated.

I have never given one to a non hobbyist, however.

I'll have to post pics later.

Whenever I have a chance, I give my stuff away. Selling things can get you a few dollars that will disappear in  a flash, but you give someone something they will enjoy, you have made a friend.

There are Folk on the Forum, at my Bank, Jersey Giant Pizza, & other places/people that have some of my stuff. The last piece I gave away was the Mushroom Witch to my dentist, Dr. Kim:

I got quite a nice reaction from her...hugs are better than cash.

I have given several Battletech minis as gifts over the years and a couple of swaps here on the forum. I think everyone liked them [I hope!]

Yes.  Sadly I have lost the pictures of said minis.  They were a bunch of old Reaper figures we used for D&D that the one guy provided.  This was many many moons ago.  I also speed-painted a Lizardman army for a friend who owns a gaming store who wanted something to help demo games with.  Come to think of it, I also painted an old GW fairy queen from the wood elves for my wife, GF back then.  That one is in my display cabinet so should be able to dig up a picture of it.

I haven't, but I might in the future.  This is why I got multiple sets of Rocky with the Bones 4 KS.

I have. My brother DM'd for some people who wanted to try D&D, and I had him slyly get character descriptions from them. I painted them up as best I could accordingly; told my brother they could keep them if they liked them, or I'd take them back when they were done. I wasn't there when he unveiled them in their first combat, but I am told they were thrilled. And I didn't get them back, so I take that as a decent sign.

By reports, the tiefling player was thrilled with the green hotpants (her only description was that she had purple hair and non-red skin, so the green was my call).

Yes! All the time. Mostly Mouslings for my wife, but I've also given away several PC minis to gaming friends. And in one case an altar/evil priest/victim combo as a dungeon warming gift when one of my players took over hosting. Here's my favorite gifted Mousling.

I give away most of the minis I've painted to one person or another. Here is one of the ones that has been gifted.

Yes. In point of fact "free" is the only commission that I accept.

The last one I did (which wasn't for a forum exchange) was a copy of 77103 Nor'Okk, Ettin. A friend of mine asked me to paint one up for his (then teen-aged) son as a Christmas gift. It was tied to one of the kid's Pathfinder characters, and he really wanted something as a trophy.

I would say that it was received really well, and I was very happy to do the work, even I delivered a few weeks late.

I have painted a Chibi mermaid for Oldest Vixen  since she likes to swim so much ( She practises Synchronized Swimming) and I made her a Buffy /Willow/Spike Diorama since she loved that series.

Hugs and praises were my reward.

For youngest vixen I painted a small Brutus and a small Odin ( Our Boxerdog and my former one, she really connected with Odin, the oldest vixen connects more with Brutus)

She loved it.

And for my girl I painted a bust like Brutus.

It is in our display cabinet.

Any idea who makes this guy @Loim ?

If he is a metal mini I would like to hunt one down and add him to The Cursed Company.

Edit: nevermind, found him. Skelton Breaker #2 of 2, O3758.

Question June 11th.

Would you like to paint miniatures for a living? Even if you don't get to choose what to paint?

My eyes wandered into this topic today and I feel the need to say something! I should visit more often.

I've been considering it, though not as a living but as supplementary income. Being currently unemployed helps in this thinking. And I feel confident now in my speed and technique that I can turn around a mini for someone fast enough at a decent general tabletop quality. I say supplementary income because I wouldn't want to take commissions all the time.  I'd find that sweet spot when I have the time to do them balanced with the stuff I want to do personally. And there is no way I will do armies. The great thing about self-employment is you can decline an offer for work if you can't do something for whatever reason.

PCs/individual models on commission as time permits and have an online store selection of pre-painted items (some PCs, but largely monsters and terrain) because folks are less particular about specific color choices when a mini isn't representing them. And the latter allows me to paint them how I want, and I do love painting monsters more than PCs, honestly. I don't mind not choosing what to paint on occasion. One, I enjoy a challenge. And two, most times I'm able to find where I can add that little bit of me within the given parameters set by someone else. But I've been in the service industry for awhile now, so I'm used to bending rules to satisfy customer

Yeah, I haven't thought about this at all. There isn't a business start-up event hosted by the local SBDC tomorrow. >>

The first mini I posted on these forums two years ago (Thorvald, Dwarf Hero) was actually a gift.  One of my friends was just starting up in D&D and since I had just picked up the hobby again, I painted a character piece for him. He wanted to pay me after I gave it to him, but hell no! It was a gift!
