Question June 12th.

Have you ever given someone a painted mini as a gift and how was it received?

BONUS - show us pics of said mini.

I've given a few minis as gifts :)

I've participated in the Secret Sophie exchange and made a Buffy and Spike inspired scene, which was well received.

I modified and painted a tiefling ranger for one of my best friends, and he loved it.

I painted a dracolisk for my stepdad's birthday. He liked it but I've been struggling with a stickyness reaction between the 'Ardcoat and the bones material, so he hasn't gotten to enjoy it much yet.

I painted a nativity scene for my hard-to-buy-gifts-for grandparents. Both years I've painted them pieces the reaction has been lukewarm, but I think that has more to do with them and our relationship than with the gift itself. This year they're getting a gift card instead.

And, though this is less a miniature and more miniature art, I will sometimes use nail products to paint designs on teeny coin sized pieces of birch wood and give them to friends and family. These have all gone over well.

Thinking of these all in retrospect, making the minis as gifts really allowed me to try some new techniques that I might not have before. Really, making gifts has been excellent motivation to expand my skill sets.

I have a quite a few mini gifts planned for Christmas this year, so hopefully I can get to them all!

Yes! I haven't done many, but I recently completed two for some friends. They were originally meant as Christmas gifts but it took me some time to complete them. I only have pictures of one, but it is NSFW. It is 03639 Bella the Succubus. The other was an archer/ranger character. Some years ago I also painted up several Bones 1 mini's for people, later I did some of the Stonehaven Halflings. They were all received well.

I may have pics of some of the others somewhere, but they are likely lost at this point.

I've sent off a few as part of exchanges here, and I know at least one was appreciated.

I have never given one to a non hobbyist, however.

I'll have to post pics later.

And now it's later.

Like every exchange I do, these are both converted. The hope is that having a unique figure makes up for my not so awesome painting ability.

There have been others, but those pictures are gone...

I did a diorama for my mom with my Sibling's help. It was received well. She did not know that we'd made it until we told her. Link to pics in my profile.

Yes, well I think.

The bunny was a gift for my sister's graduation.

The Santa was a Christmas present for mom.

Erh... well. Let's go for the top three.

1. DRAGON!

2. Non-human humanoids; orcs, goblins..

3. Animals of most types, including mythic beasties.

  1. Reptilians ( Lizardmen, Snakemen, Turtlemen, Frogmen, Newtmen etc)
  2. Dinosaurs
  3. Gothic Undead ( Vampires, Ghouls, Gargoyles, Succubi, Necromancers, Zombies)
  4. Egyptian Style Undead ( Mummies, Anubi, Ushabti, Sphinx, etc)
  5. Chaos preferably Nurgle or Slaanesh
  6. Conquistadores
  7. Meso Americans ( Aztec/Maya/Inca/Olmecs/Toltec etc)
  8. Barbarians
  9. Megafauna
  10. Pirates

Where possible I like to include as many female warriors/characters as I can.

I love to paint women/girls and I want my armies to include as many as possible.

And I love to paint animals and familiars to include them wherever I can.

Not really, I just paint stuff, although 99.9% of the time it's a human.

When I first read the question I thought it was asking for specific sculpts, that is: “03758 Reaper” or a specific KingdomD figure. But categories it is:

1. Figures covered in metal armor

2. Figures that are skeletons

3. Small dragons or Scaly things
