"Waylaid By An Enemy" ReaperCon 2019 Diorama

Great job, I really like the NMM on the swords. Personally I would do something with the wood, it feels too light colored and draws the eye from your beautiful figures.

I can't decide between painting it and staining it. I think stain would look better, but I'm not sure...

I usually paint them black but I think a dark stain would fit your scene better.

Great diorama!  I really like these two - they are really going at each other quite fiercely.

I like the idea of a stain. ( stain > > > jet black paint )

Pro tips:

—test the stain for looks first on one of the other bases from “the cheap three pack”.

—get a foam sanding block (220 grit +) and smoothen the base a bit before applying stain7343-030_S.jpg

Foam sanding block

—use a tacky cloth to remove (wipe away) any residual dust after sanding and before staining

Tacky Cloth (aka tack cloth)

I would paint it black all though I would prep it much the same as I would if I was staining it. Black will keep everyone focused on the scene and the eye will not drift down to the base. Your other option would be to match one of the greens on the base. Black, however, will make it like its floating.

Is is this a heavily converted piece? Seems more like a diorama entry than an open entry. You might go back to the Reaper Con section and read the threads for open and diorama and look at how the scores are weighted for judging.

Beautiful scene - great choice of dynamic minis and how you placed them on the base - well done!

Its definitely a diorama. The whole base is scratch built!

I'm going to go with a stain. I have some here, as well as one of those sanding blocks, so I'll test it out and see if it matches.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone!

another vote for polyurethane one-step stain and sealer. If it was a scene of mostly stone, pillars, etc. then Black paint might be better, but a dark stain allowing just a tiny bit of the wood grain to  show thru would really set off the greenery IMO. They also offer the stain in black but there's a color called Espresso you might consider, very ,very dark Brown , almost  black.

Minwax  PolyShades  is what i used for a home project, easy peezy

awesome scene btw, makes you wonder right "who will win this?'

Maybe do a follow up scene, one of the combatants gets their head either chopped off or caved in ;)

I have some of the dark shade here that I think I'm going to go with. I used it a few Christmases back for gifts for my D&D group. (See image)

A follow up would be great! Maybe something way in the future, like this same scene but with snow covering both of their bones and an animal walking by, unaware of the fight that once took place here!

Great dynamic scene you have created here and the painting also looks fantastic. The nmm turned out great as well as the faces and all other details. Good colour selection and good base on top. Thumbs up!!!

So I've been poking at this diorama idea for a couple of years, and it's morphed a bit since I first started it, but I'm thinking that I'm nearing the final composition. But... I'm beginning to second guess myself.

So, do you think this tells a good/clear story?
Should I remove the adventurers from their bases, or paint the bases to match the floor?

      Any and all thoughts welcome!

      UPDATED 8/17/19
So I will be running the Hobby Hijinx corner at ReaperCon again this year. If you are not familiar with the corner, it is where Reaper offers free 1-2 hour paint and take events. We have the classic Paint 'N Take area as always, as well as the Sophie Says, traditional Speedpaints and the new Paint by Die Roll and Bones Mashup.

I will be updating this post as details are firmed up.

If anyone has any ideas for the current events or new events, please post them here.

If you would like to volunteer to help in the Hobby Hijinx corner, please send me a PM with the days and times you would like to help and if you would like to be a helper or coordinator. Coordinators will be responsible for running individual events (all the supplies will be there) Helpers will assist coordinators. I will be the default coordinator for any event that doesn't have a volunteer

      Sophie Says
A fun cross of Simon Says and Speed Painting. Don’t let the time element scare you, this is about being silly and having fun while painting a mini. All supplies and the mini will be provided. Once the timer starts, participants will have 45 minutes to paint the mini to the best of their abilities. Sophie, (or one of her minions) will intermittently apply challenges to the painters, such as painting while standing on one leg, painting polka dots somewhere on the mini, etc. Sophie understands that not everyone will be able to perform all of the challenges and encourages participants to participate as much as they feel comfortable. Every participant will receive a certificate declaring how awesome and silly they are. This is a kid friendly activity, but we do ask that anyone under 15 be accompanied by an adult. Sophie Says After Dark
This is slightly more adult themed version of Sophie Says, a fun cross of Simon Says and Speed Painting. THIS IS A PG-13 VERSION. ADULT BEVERAGES WILL BE ALLOWED AT THE TABLES AND THINGS WILL BE MAY BE MORE AWKWARD. Speed Paint
All supplies and the mini will be provided. Participants are allowed to bring their own brush if they wish. Once the timer starts, participants will have 45 minutes to paint the mini to the best of their abilities. Once the time is up all painting must cease. All entries will be judged by specially selected stunt judge. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. All participants will receive a certificate to attest to grit and determination. This is a kid friendly activity, but we do ask that anyone under 15 be accompanied by an adult. Paint by Die Roll
This is a group skill building event rather than a competition. Step outside your comfort zone and paint with color combinations. All supplies and the mini will be provided. Participants are allowed to bring their own brush and/or palate if they wish. All participants will receive the same mini, the group will then roll a d20 to determine which portions of the mini will be what color. Example: Last year there an ogre chieftain with Palomino gold skin, purple cloth, mint green metal, and pale lichen leather. Black, White, and Brown will be provided for shading and highlighting purposes only. Everyone will receive a certificate attesting to their willingness to try new things. This is a kid friendly activity, but we do ask that anyone under 15 be accompanied by an adult. Quick Conversion
Let your creativity flow as you cut, glue, and pin your own unique mini. Use a collection of Reaper minis and pieces to create something new. Will you come up with a goblin headed rogue, or a beholder mermaid? It’s up to you. This activity will involve cutting implements and super clue so we do ask that anyone under 15 be accompanied by an adult. Ed Sculpts are Best Sculpts
When Reaper was a young company and sculptors could get first hand references for their dinosaur sculpts, now president of Reaper Miniatures, Ed Pugh, contributed to the product line by sculpting many of the skeletons. Come raise the dead and socialize with your fellow necroma.....painters. This is a kid friendly activity, but we do ask that anyone under 15 be accompanied by an adult.

It occurred to me out of the blue today that I've completely forgotten to call Houlihans (the on-site hotel restaurant) to see if seating for 30-40 people could be reserved on Sunday.

I did this last year, and from all reports this arrangement was well-received and convenient for everyone.

If there are no strong objections, I plan to call tomorrow (Monday) to see if such can be arranged again. I just hope it's still possible, it's getting a bit close...

Last year I made the reservation for 6:30pm. For those that went last year, was 6:30pm a good time, or would earlier have been better? My thinking last year was that it would give some time after the auction for people to do some packing first (also gives a buffer in case the auction runs super long).

Looking forward to seeing y'all SOON!

While @Pegazus's Forumite bingo helps, I am TERRIBLE about remembering names. I will totally remember your face and what we did three years ago but for the life of me I can't even remember the first letter of your name. I figured I'd make a cheat sheet where people could share a photo and name so people can have a refresher before the con.

      Prefered name: Ludo
Pronoun of Choice: He, It, Dude
