Mimic's Grid: Metal, magnetic, gaming tiles

Recommended Posts

They really need to provide a better overview of what "artist sets" are/will be available/look like. I'm pretty sure they'd be a major selling point.

I’ve got Tact-Tiles, Gaming Paper tiles and Role 4 Initiative tiles. All are pretty good, but each have a drawback that still has me looking for the ultimate gaming tile set.

I like the look of these, but the fact that they’ve never created a Kickstarter before (or even backed one on their account) puts up one red flag for me. They are fairly pricey too (although that’s not unexpected given that they are using steel in the construction), but it makes for a high buy-in cost.

Edit: I should add that the metal surface (which is therefore magnetic) is a big plus for me.

I also have tact tiles, and we've used them for years. I love them. But I'm looking at these Mimic's Grid pieces pretty hard.

The permanent marker writability is pretty awesome, and I dig the durability and magnetism of the steel. I'll keep an eye on this one.

My Tact-Tiles have seen several years of use too. However the lines have started to rub off and I've found removing dry erase markers becomes more difficult over time.

I didn't care for the newer tact-tiles I bought.. they were too heavy for my liking.  I've got some of the magnetic mats from the other KS that has had fulfillment issues and I'm really happy with them

The Gaming Night Life one? I missed that one, but have checked in every couple of months to read the updates. Seems like it’s a bit of a train wreck for most backers.

Glad and sad to see its not just my tact tiles that are starting to have issues removing the dry erase from them. Project has funded and first streach goals added. Hex's and blanks at 400 backers.

I still love using my Tact-Tiles, but it definitely seems like the top layer wears away over time and the dry-erase becomes harder to get off. Isopropyl alcohol works wonders on cleaning them though.

Yeah, I'm still waiting on the game night life one even though I requested a switch to what they had available.

I think I'll be backing this one. I never liked Tact-tiles that much, having known friends who used them. I'm assuming the artist sets are what are shown in the demo. The art work is a bit on the anime/manga flavored side but the magnetic walls and terrain that will accompany it should be a lot of help as well. If they had some magnetic trees to accompany it for the outdoors I think they'd be killing this KS.

They have decided to unlock the hex grid and blank slates since they hit 40G. At 400 they are unlocking a 2d terrain set for each grid set backer

"What's next? Well, we thought you might like something to put on your Grids, so we're making you some walls and stuff. Every Grid set included in each reward level will come with a Cursed Crypt Dungeon Starter Kit, a 2D Element set of 1x1 or larger dungeon walls and doors that will let you design your own devious and dastardly dungeon adventures!"

Debating this one. I have the Gaming paper tiles ones (3 sets actually) that get used quite a bit & have held up to & from ReaperCon & weekly trips to the game store. I do like the magnets (thou with them sharing my backpack with my laptop, might not be good) but I do like that writeable surface. Perm pens are so much cheaper then the wet-erase I use (I use Stadeler(sp) brand). I'll debate this before the KS ends.

They have posted a video update showing how all sorts of markers do on the board from UV light to a lot of brands of dry, wet and permanent markers

Hey guys, Greg from Cursed Crypt here. We made the Mimic's Grid! Just came across this thread, and I wanted to jump in here and say thank you for checking it out, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask, and I will do my best to answer them.

To address a couple of comments:

@Arkady - The artists are all working on their exclusive sets currently. We're waiting on samples from them, but at this point, it is kind of a trust relationship, and we understand that it is hard to blindly back their stuff based on that. We just sent out a request for samples, and we're going to be posting them as soon as they come in.

@Olaf the Stout - We created a new "company" account to create the Kickstarter. This is our first one, but we've all backed a ton of tabletop Kickstarters before on our personal accounts and whatnot. For instance, like 90% of the minis in my collection are Reaper Bones, a few of which you can see in the videos and stuff. We're all lifelong gamers who just wanted to make something cool, but I totally get the hesitancy to back something based on numbers. We want to be around a long time, so we're definitely not out to screw anyone over.

@Everyone else - The magnetics are my favorite part of the Mimic's Grid. We're recording an actual play video tomorrow, and hopefully that will be an opportunity to show off some of the amazing stuff you can do with the magnetic aspect of the Grids.

We hit 400 (and 200% funded simultaneously, that was cool), and we're going to be announcing a new stretch goal today.

If you have any questions, please let me know! I'm happy to answer.

Greg

      About
        Hi, my name is Raffaele Stumpo and this is my second KS campaign so let me tell you something about me and my work. I work as a sculptor in the fantasy miniatures, sci-fi and board games industry since 2003. My passion for the fantasy world grew more and more when I was a child. At some point, it became my job. I think my enthusiasm shines vividly in my creations. Thanks to my dedication, I won many industry awards and dozens of Golden Demon, and the following Best of Show: Grog 2016, and Grog 2017.
      If you want take a look to my profile at CMON site.
      In 2008, I started a collaboration with several miniatures studios for the production of fantasy football teams. I worked on dozen of teams, mastering skills and techniques, until I became worldwide known. I prepare my models one by one, that is why they are unique and this is the main reason people appreciate their quality. Everything is handmade. I collaborated in many successful Kickstarter campaigns as a sculptor Designer and as a Guest:
      - Galaxy Defenders - The Earth Strikes Back! boardgame;
      - Galaxy Defenders - Co-op Sci-Fi Miniature Board Game;
      - Sword & Sorcery - Ancient Chronicles;
      - Bull Warriors: Chaos Dwarfs for Fantasy Football;

      Version for fantasy football

        Dwarves: Team Legends
      I've always loved the Dwarves... Their culture, their strength, their pride!
      I always chose the Dwarves character in every role playing game I joined, video game or board game.
      So, what best opportunity to show my love for the Dwarves than my own sculpting project?
      From this premise is born "Dwarves: Kings and Legends"
      A set of 28-30 mm scale miniatures of Dwarves, compatible with all the major game settings and all convertible to Fantasy Football.
      All the models are completely hand sculpted.

      I hope you will like them as much as I enjoyed making them!

      Belius versus Angus and Branag

      Belius the Black is a giant with mysterious origins. We say about him  that it is the reincarnation of a god, or even,  the guardian of an ancient temple. In short, according to the babarian tribes of the North, it is a black legend  related to Bregan Lorelei’s great-grandfather.

      Bélius is a 70 mm figurine sculpted by me, not counting my hours, in order to obtain the incarnation of the warrior of evil, chaos and destruction. The resin cast will be made by Mr Dès, former melter of  Rackham , a pledge of high quality. This project , a range of dark fantasy figurines, is important because I can create from A to Z what i want  while satisfying the fans of my work.

      Indeed,  I have been sculpting figurines for more than 20 years : First, for Rackham for 9 years and then for various freelance brands such as Mierce Miniatures,  Monolith with Conan, Mythic Battles and Claustrophobia which are successful  on Kickstarter.

      The Kickstarter platform will allow me to finance the moulds for all the figurines, which are all my personal creations. Knowing that the fans of my work will be able to hold them in hand, paint them, or play with them in any kind of games is really a great pleasure for me. This first step is important because i imagine that these figurines are destined for a game in the future.

                       Belius is accompanied by two brothers, Angus and Branag (35mm): They are barbarians from northern tribes. They are elite soldiers ready to  do anything to protect their lands and the Elebore Forest from any intrusion in the name of their leader, the demigod Siegfried.
