Mimic's Grid: Metal, magnetic, gaming tiles

Recommended Posts

They really need to provide a better overview of what "artist sets" are/will be available/look like. I'm pretty sure they'd be a major selling point.

I’ve got Tact-Tiles, Gaming Paper tiles and Role 4 Initiative tiles. All are pretty good, but each have a drawback that still has me looking for the ultimate gaming tile set.

I like the look of these, but the fact that they’ve never created a Kickstarter before (or even backed one on their account) puts up one red flag for me. They are fairly pricey too (although that’s not unexpected given that they are using steel in the construction), but it makes for a high buy-in cost.

Edit: I should add that the metal surface (which is therefore magnetic) is a big plus for me.

I also have tact tiles, and we've used them for years. I love them. But I'm looking at these Mimic's Grid pieces pretty hard.

The permanent marker writability is pretty awesome, and I dig the durability and magnetism of the steel. I'll keep an eye on this one.

My Tact-Tiles have seen several years of use too. However the lines have started to rub off and I've found removing dry erase markers becomes more difficult over time.

I didn't care for the newer tact-tiles I bought.. they were too heavy for my liking.  I've got some of the magnetic mats from the other KS that has had fulfillment issues and I'm really happy with them

The Gaming Night Life one? I missed that one, but have checked in every couple of months to read the updates. Seems like it’s a bit of a train wreck for most backers.

Glad and sad to see its not just my tact tiles that are starting to have issues removing the dry erase from them. Project has funded and first streach goals added. Hex's and blanks at 400 backers.

I still love using my Tact-Tiles, but it definitely seems like the top layer wears away over time and the dry-erase becomes harder to get off. Isopropyl alcohol works wonders on cleaning them though.

Yeah, I'm still waiting on the game night life one even though I requested a switch to what they had available.

I think I'll be backing this one. I never liked Tact-tiles that much, having known friends who used them. I'm assuming the artist sets are what are shown in the demo. The art work is a bit on the anime/manga flavored side but the magnetic walls and terrain that will accompany it should be a lot of help as well. If they had some magnetic trees to accompany it for the outdoors I think they'd be killing this KS.

They have decided to unlock the hex grid and blank slates since they hit 40G. At 400 they are unlocking a 2d terrain set for each grid set backer

"What's next? Well, we thought you might like something to put on your Grids, so we're making you some walls and stuff. Every Grid set included in each reward level will come with a Cursed Crypt Dungeon Starter Kit, a 2D Element set of 1x1 or larger dungeon walls and doors that will let you design your own devious and dastardly dungeon adventures!"

Debating this one. I have the Gaming paper tiles ones (3 sets actually) that get used quite a bit & have held up to & from ReaperCon & weekly trips to the game store. I do like the magnets (thou with them sharing my backpack with my laptop, might not be good) but I do like that writeable surface. Perm pens are so much cheaper then the wet-erase I use (I use Stadeler(sp) brand). I'll debate this before the KS ends.

They have posted a video update showing how all sorts of markers do on the board from UV light to a lot of brands of dry, wet and permanent markers

Hey guys, Greg from Cursed Crypt here. We made the Mimic's Grid! Just came across this thread, and I wanted to jump in here and say thank you for checking it out, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask, and I will do my best to answer them.

To address a couple of comments:

@Arkady - The artists are all working on their exclusive sets currently. We're waiting on samples from them, but at this point, it is kind of a trust relationship, and we understand that it is hard to blindly back their stuff based on that. We just sent out a request for samples, and we're going to be posting them as soon as they come in.

@Olaf the Stout - We created a new "company" account to create the Kickstarter. This is our first one, but we've all backed a ton of tabletop Kickstarters before on our personal accounts and whatnot. For instance, like 90% of the minis in my collection are Reaper Bones, a few of which you can see in the videos and stuff. We're all lifelong gamers who just wanted to make something cool, but I totally get the hesitancy to back something based on numbers. We want to be around a long time, so we're definitely not out to screw anyone over.

@Everyone else - The magnetics are my favorite part of the Mimic's Grid. We're recording an actual play video tomorrow, and hopefully that will be an opportunity to show off some of the amazing stuff you can do with the magnetic aspect of the Grids.

We hit 400 (and 200% funded simultaneously, that was cool), and we're going to be announcing a new stretch goal today.

If you have any questions, please let me know! I'm happy to answer.

Greg

Not sure if anyone cares, but thought i'd post it in case

well articulated (19 points on average), scientifically accurate action figures of 1/18th Ceratopsians. Not all have been unlocked yet though, and probably won't be before it's done

He has 1 successful kickstarter that he's fully delivered on in a timely manner and came out pretty well

Phillip Reed is getting back to his publishing roots - and doing A Kickstarter PDFs for lists of neat stuff, starting with A Dozen Sinister Rumors.

      The sweet spot is... $1.

At this point, that gets you eight PDFs.

There are no physical rewards, only PDFs. And turn around should be swift.

Phil Reed used to run Ronin Arts, which specialized in these little PDFs, back when the OGL was new and shiny.

I am glad to see him getting back into it.

Boiling Poison Dice set is far more than “just another dice set”. Each Boiling Poison Dice set pack contains a complete set of three D6 gaming dices.
They can be used to play a large number of tabletop games and dice games.
Whether you are a dice collector or a player, we are sure that you’ll find what you are looking for!  You can enjoy just making designs with them, or leaving them out on tables to play with

I'm honestly surprised there hasn't been a thread about this one yet but I've been holding off 'til nearer the launch date to share my enthusiasm. Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood is a fantasy boardgame with a distinct Kingdom Death feel (but without the Kingdom Death anime feel). In this game humans live in isolated settlements surrounded by the deep dark forests. Big nasty monsters are a threat to humanity and heroes go out to fight the monsters.

The miniatures are a little on the large scale with the humans being around 35-40mm and the monsters being much larger. For combat players can use a deck of cards or roll dice. The dice are more random whilst the cards have a statistically even spread making them more predictable if that's what you prefer. Inbetween battling terrifying monsters the heroes get to do stuff in their settlements and go monster hunting (which will feature a choice based fighting fantasy/lone wolf/choose your own adventure gameplay element). There is an ally element to permit a vanquished player to continue to take part in a showdown with a temporary character. Some of the six playable characters are not human. There's a barbarian, priest, knight, witch, a plant based forest archer creature and a great armoured warrior bear!

Oh and if, unlike me, you have a mobile phone, the game will have a fully voiced narration app featuring the recognisable voice of James Cosmo (Lord Commander Mormont of the Night's Watch from Game of Thrones).

The project launches on 8th October.

      Campaign preview page is up
