The Silent Temple

Recommended Posts

The heroes set off in the morning on fresh horses and doubts swirling in many of their minds.

The land is an open steppe from here on in. A gentle wind blows the through the tall grass as your horses ride down the pristine Argat roadway. There are campsites along the way some built on purpose for priests and nobles, others makeshift peasants sites. All are ominously empty.

As the days pass and you ride closer to the temple you begin to notice the dark clouds forming in the distance. A storm is coming, you think. But as the next days pass the storm does not seem to be moving. Suddenly as you crest a gentle slope you see riders approaching from below. They are dawned in metal around emblazed with the symbol of the sun.

“Ho there!” One of the riders calls out. “Identify yourselves!”

As you approach you notice these are no ordinary church men but members of the High Priest Guard, the elite temple guardians known for both their fierce loyalty and devotion. What are the High Priest’s Guards doing out here, you wonder. This matter must be graver than you first thought.

“I am Father Jaden Sabas.” Calls out the priest riding forward from the group and making his cloak seen by the guards. He rides out towards them and then huddles in conversation with them. Returning to the group he says to them “All is well these guards will escort us to the temple.”

Alistair mumbles under his breath, "So do I lass, so do I."

*internal musing* "Hmmm, no doubt these guards are here to ease our passage in, but our passage out...? Typical heavy handed priests, do they think us fools." *eyes his companions* "Well, then again."

"Well, Father Jaden, pray introduce us to these stalwart guardians of the king's highway. No doubt they prepare a swift and safe passage for such law abiding travelers as we. I would most like to remember them in song and tale."

Karl Krieger (still an npc) boldly introduces himself.

"I am Karl Krieger, most noble paladin of the Sun Lord, Savior of West Hearth, Slayer of the Ten tailed Beast of the Western Isles, and Redeemer of the family Gerat of West Hold, at your sevice."

"Thank the Sun Lord," one of the riders says with relief in his voice. "You are all weclome. Espeically you Master Kreiger and you Father Jaden."

"We need a report of your progress," Karl replies boldly.

"Come then, to our camp and commander Drisus will tell you all you need to know."

An hour later the party is at a soldiers camp. Commander Drisus, as fine a speicmen of the temple guard if there ever was one, invites you all into his tent and begins to explain. "We have been trying at length to keep the common folk from the temple but it has not been easy. There are guard posts stationed all around at one mile intervals and our patrols have been ever vigilant, but there has been a group of orcs spotted in nearby from time to time. None of our hunters and rangers have been able to locate there base, however. It is like they come and go with the wind."

As Drisus gestures, a figure steps out of the shadows. He's a half elf, judging by his ears and features, and he looks to be towards the tall end of the spectrum for that race, although he does have a wiry, almost gangly figure. He's dressed in studded leather armour and has a dagger sheathed on his right hip.

"Good day one and all. When I heard of your quest, I couldn't help but volunteer to aid you in the service of the Sun Lord." The half-elf's demeanour is reserved but none-the-less it is possible to detect the flamboyance common to his elven heritage. He looks at Jaden and Karl and a joyful smile spreads across his face like the sun driving away dark clouds. "I am pleased to accompany you Father, and hope to be of service in the days ahead. And of course, I have heard of you Karl Krieger and am overjoyed to vanquish whatever has sullied the great Sun Lord's most high temple at your side."

The half-elf seems genuinely happy to be accompanying the party, and the ferver of his words is hearthfelt but still somewhat exaggerated, as one would expect of someone of his parentage.

"My name is Alexios Nightbright, but my friends call me Lex."

Rurik: Another sword to our group will improve our odds, as I'm sure there will be much battle ahead.

Orcs!, now that would be a nice way for me to warm up my axe before entering the temple.

Content to allow the Paladin to handle the guards, Father Jaden follows behind on his horse as they are led into camp. Once there he slowly dismounts taking a long moment to work out a kink in his back from the long trip. After that has been accomplished as best as possible, the Priest follows the guard into the tent accepting the help offered by one of the guards to lead him there. Sitting quietly he allows Kreiger to ask the questions necessary dismissing the offer of wine and accepting an offer of water. He watches silently even as the Half-Elf presents himself to the group. Finally after the introduction has been made he looks at Commander Drisus and smiles softly.

“My dear lad, you have done a wonderful job in your assigned task. I am sure it has been difficult being stationed so far away from any services. Before I leave I will accept your men in my tent for a mass for our wonderful Lord.” He waits a moment while the Commander dispatches a guard to prepare for the mass, after the task is done he continues, “However, this news you speak of regarding Orcs disturbs Us. What are their filth doing so close to one of our temples? Perhaps you should send word back to the city to ask for skilled trackers. I will prepare the documentation for you. We ourselves would investigate but we must make haste to our destination.” He lays a hand on the Paladin before he can voice any objections. With that settled to his liking he turns to the Half-Elf.

“Your name was Alexios Nightbright correct.” It is not a question but a statement. “Who may I ask informed you that we needed any help in our, what did you call it lad, oh yes, quest?” Father Jaden’s calming voice takes the edge out of the question but his penetrating eyes command the man before him to speak.

Before Lex can reply Drisus answers for him, "Forgive me Father Jaden but the boys father is Hermes NightBright, the great benefactor and friend of Elagabulus. The boy managed to listen in on conversation, and when little Lex here heard what was happening he volunteered. Elagabulus sent him on to catch up with you. It seems he arrived first."

Karl Krieger (still an NPC...sigh), ignoring the new face completely, turns to Father Jaden. "Orcs here? Correct me if I am wrong Father, but there have been no orcs in the Eastern plains for a thousand years. What could this mean?"

Smiling at Karl, Father Jaden address him first. “It probably means nothing valiant knight. You know that their scum infests everywhere. They probably heard that the order was pulling out of this region and came to investigate.” Turning back to Drisus he address him and the Half-Elf.

“So you are the boy of Hermes Nightbright. Well you are here. So tell us young Alexios, what skills do you bring to our quest?”

*Alistair grins* "Well, perhaps I was wrong about the skill of yon weaponed statuary. They can't even find a few great tromping orcs? My aging grandmother could find orcs!"

Rurik: Father Jaden (using his formal title as not to diminish his status in front of those of his order) Lex has already demonstrated that he is very quick by arriving here before us, perhaps he may have other skills that Drisus men do not that would allow us to track these orcs.

Now I know it’s important to arrive at the temple as quickly as possible but I believe that the appearance of these orcs is no coincidence. Why journey so far into your Sun Lord lands and risk detection or death. Perhaps they carry some vital information or seek to enter the temple by some secret means. (His eyes open wide) We could set a trap or even allow them to move unhindered so we may follow them until we are sure what they are up to.

Of course the decision is your, I just wanted to present all the facts to you.

Dane walks over to the half-elf "Greetings to you Alexios, my name is Dane. I am sure that your addition to our party will only make it stronger."

He then listens to the discussion on the Orcs however caring little whether they seek out the Orcs or not he doesn't feel the need to speak out. If the party encounters the Orcs then no doubt they will do battle with them.
