Camera Batteries

My camera uses AA batteries, and I've been increasingly frustrated at the small amount of life I was getting out of standard batteries. I tried the special 'Digital Device' batteries, and they didn't seem much better.

The other day, though, I bit the bullet and spent $10 on 4 Energizer E2 Lithium batteries.

All I can say is 'Wow'. These batteries lasted HOURS, and hundreds of pictures, longer than anything I've ever used. The $5 for a camera load seemed pricy, until I relized that I would have gone through 4 or 5 sets of batteries for the amount of time I got out of these (inlcuding several big family get-togethers).

So, if your camera uses regular batteries, I heartily recomend checking these out.

Yes, the Duracell Lithiums are very good, as are Varta, if you can find them. Varta batteries are made specifically for cameras but they still make them in normal sizes like AA. I've used them in everything for years and they last much longer than normal batteries.

You might also want to try rechargable batteries.

The problem I have with rechargeables is that they have even shorter life spans than normal batteries. They're cheaper in the long run, but when you're out and about you still run out of juice . . .

If the manual with my Pentax digital-SLR is correct, the NiMH rechargeables should last about 400-450 pictures, which is 4 times longer than the AA sized alkalines and about half as long as the non-rechargeable lithium batteries.

The NiMH batteries are a huge improvement over the NiCd rechargeables of the past.

eastman -- I'm not using rechargeables with my *ist-D, just a pair or Energizer e-squared lithium CRV3 batteries, and they made it through roughly 475 pictures, if I'm remembering correctly. It was about 4-5 months.

If there's one thing I learned at Reaper-Con, it's that my second memory card was a lifesaver, but that I NEEEEED a spare battery. I have the lovely big square lithium battery and recharger, but I just KNEW that the ONE time the U.F.O. circled the Reaper factory, my battery would be in the recharger.

I don't think I'd need a spare memory card. I can currently store something like 150 images in full RAW format at 3000x2000 pixels. Of course, my memory "card" is actually a 2.2 GB Microdrive.

The CRV3s are supposed to last ~1000 pictures (without flash). I've shot well over 1000 pictures with my *ist D since I got it in April, and I'm still running on the pair of CRV3s that came with the camera. My 1 GB CompactFlash card claims to have advanced power management capability to extend the battery life. I had heard that the original IBM microdrives were really bad about draining batteries.

Based on the battery life specs in the manual, the investment in two camera loads of NiMH rechargeables and a 30 minute charger will pay for itself by this time next year (at the latest).

I wouldn't be surprised if it's the MicroDrive I have which is causing the extra battery drain. Still, 475 pictures wasn't bad considering my old digi-cam would last about 75 pictures on 4 AA batteries.

I think I shouldda not pressed my luck with all the hoping and wishing.. my CHARGER has DIED on me now!!! ::(:

I did ALOT of shooting last night, so I put the thing on the charger today because the "low battery" light was lit on my camera. Well, the light on the charger came on red as always, and I let it be..but about an hour later when I walked by, I noticed the light was totally out (it usually goes green when the battery is charged, whci takes about 2-3 hours)... so i checked the plug, checked the battery to be sure it was in..

..and tried the battery in my camera. It'd not picked up hardly any charge at all.

So...I went to the Olympus site.. ::o:::o:::o: THE PRICES!!!! *faints*

70 bucks for a charger... 50 bucks for a new lithium ion battery.. *faints again*

I know I know..THINK of all the alkaline AA's I wouldda used..but still... RIGHT when I was getting ready for the big War Room paint-n-take and my big Savannah holiday next week... DARNIT!

So..anybody wanna loan a poor gurl a fiver..or tenner...or hundredder? :poke:
